Book Roman Receptions of Sappho

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thea S. Thorsen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-12-17
  • ISBN : 019256482X
  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book Roman Receptions of Sappho written by Thea S. Thorsen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sappho, a towering figure in Western culture, is an exemplary case in the history of classical receptions. There are three prominent reasons for this. Firstly, Sappho is associated with some of the earliest poetry in the classical tradition, which makes her reception history one of the longest we know of. Furthermore, Sappho's poetry promotes ideologically challenging concepts such as female authority and homoeroticism, which have prompted very conspicuous interpretative strategies to deal with issues of gender and sexuality, revealing the values of the societies that have received her works through time. Finally, Sappho's legacy has been very well explored from the perspective of reception studies: important investigations have been made into responses both to her as poet-figure and to her poetry from her earliest reception through to our own time. However, one of the few eras in Sappho's longstanding reception history that has not been systematically explored before this volume is the Roman period. The omission is a paradox. Receptions of Sappho can be traced in more than eighteen Roman poets, among them many of the most central authors in the history of Latin literature. Surely, few other Greek poets can rival the impact of Sappho at Rome. This important fact calls out for a systematic approach to Sappho's Roman reception, which is the aim of Roman Receptions of Sappho that focuses on the poetry of the central period of Roman literary history, from the time of Lucretius to that of Martial.

Book The Self in Relationships

Download or read book The Self in Relationships written by Stanley Gaines and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Synopsis: In this chapter, we delve into Kurt Lewin's field theory as an overarching framework for conceptualizing the self and the psychological environment (including significant others) as interrelated aspects of individuals' life space; we consider individuals' potential exercise of self-control via conflict-reducing behaviors within close relationships; we comment upon Thibaut and Kelley's interdependence theory as a major Lewin-inspired theory within relationship science (notwithstanding its frequent use of personality-friendly terminology that actually refers to social-psychological, rather than individual-difference, phenomena); we provide an overview of the present book (including a list of the major sections); and we offer a prelude to Chapter 2, which covers Sullivan's interpersonal theory of personality as an additional Lewin-inspired theory, albeit distinctive in its focus on self-esteem as an outcome of individuals' experience of (low) interpersonal anxiety over the long term"--

Vanessa wants just one thing for her twenty-ninth birthday: an engagement ring from her longtime boyfriend, Eric. But when the ring turns out to be a mix CD and Eric turns out to be a guy who doesn't want to get married or have children, Vanessa considers a new path to having a family. When Wendy and her husband, Darren, couldn't have children the old- fashioned way, a sperm donor seemed like the perfect solution. She never imagined she'd have out-of-control twins who'd drive her to cookie binges and scrapbooking while Darren escaped into the virtual world of computer games. Single and career-driven, Laura didn't need a man to have a baby - at least not one that she ever met. Thanks to an anonymous donor, she shares her life with her adored eight-year-old son, Ian. She'll do anything for Ian - even fill their backyard with a bunch of noisy chickens. But the one thing Ian really wants is something Laura's never been able to give him: a sibling. Now, to grant Ian's wish, Laura starts a search that will not only change her life but Vanessa's and Wendy's as well...

Book The Cyprus Referendum

Download or read book The Cyprus Referendum written by Chrysostomos Pericleous and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06-17 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cyprus referendum of 2004 was a definitive moment in the recent history of Cyprus. The island's future hung in the balance - specifically the fate of the controversial Annan Plan, which proposed the creation of a single United Cyprus Republic with two constituent states. Accepted by the Turkish side but rejected by Greek Cypriots, the Plan was not implemented. In this balanced account of a highly charged period, Chrysostomos Pericleous offers an exhaustive treatment of the events that culminated in the referendum and through his comparative study, explains the positions ultimately taken by Greek and Turkish Cypriots. "The Cyprus Referendum" presents the definitive account of the course of action taken by President Tassos Papadopoulos and his ruling coalition which ultimately led to the resounding 'No' vote on the Annan Plan by the Greek Cypriots at the referendum.Pericleous places the events on the island within a wider global context, focusing especially on the re-orientation of US foreign policy in the Greece- Turkey-Cyprus triangle. Drawing together all the evidence, the author explores the consequences for the island and whether the rejection of the referendum will lead to a period of decline for Cyprus unless a dramatic change occurs in Greek Cypriot politics. An important contribution to the study of Cypriot politics, "The Cyprus Referendum" provides readers with a deeper insight into the broader political framework within which the UN peace initiative in Cyprus has developed. It is a meticulous study of a critical moment in Cypriot history and the depth of its research makes the book invaluable for anyone interested in the island - past, present and future.
