Book excerpt: For managers, talk IS action. This ground-breaking book argues that what senior executives do should rest squarely on what they say. The logical conclusion is that organizations are a network of conversations - between employees, employers, suppliers and customers - the only thing executives can influence is the debate, discussion or dialogue they happen to be in at the moment. The authors explore how twelve global firms have tackled the art and science of strategic conversations and the book contains a range of new tools and techniques for leading effective change and implementing strategy using this philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÒIf you remember the Sixties,Ó quipped Robin Williams, Òyou werenÕt there.Ó That was, of course, an oblique reference to the mind-bending drugs that clouded perceptionÑyet time has proven an equally effective hallucinogen. This book revisits the Sixties we forgot or somehow failed to witness. In a kaleidoscopic global tour of the decade, Gerard DeGroot reminds us that the ÒBallad of the Green BeretÓ outsold ÒGive Peace a Chance,Ó that the Students for a Democratic Society were outnumbered by Young Americans for Freedom, that revolution was always a pipe dream, and that the Sixties belong to Reagan and de Gaulle more than to Kennedy and Dubcek. The Sixties Unplugged shows how opportunity was squandered, and why nostalgia for the decade has obscured sordidness and futility. DeGroot returns us to a time in which idealism, tolerance, and creativity gave way to cynicism, chauvinism, and materialism. He presents the Sixties as a drama acted out on stages around the world, a theater of the absurd in which ChinaÕs Cultural Revolution proved to be the worst atrocity of the twentieth century, the Six-Day War a disaster for every nation in the Middle East, and a million slaughtered Indonesians martyrs to greed. The Sixties Unplugged restores to an era the prevalent disorder and inconvenient truths that longing, wistfulness, and distance have obscured. In an impressionistic journey through a tumultuous decade, DeGroot offers an object lesson in the distortions nostalgia can create as it strives to impose order on memory and value on mayhem.

Download or read book Scripting Revolution written by Keith Michael Baker and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-07 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Arab Spring" was heralded and publicly embraced by foreign leaders of many countries that define themselves by their own historic revolutions. The contributors to this volume examine the legitimacy of these comparisons by exploring whether or not all modern revolutions follow a pattern or script. Traditionally, historians have studied revolutions as distinct and separate events. Drawing on close familiarity with many different cultures, languages, and historical transitions, this anthology presents the first cohesive historical approach to the comparative study of revolutions. This volume argues that the American and French Revolutions provided the genesis of the revolutionary "script" that was rewritten by Marx, which was revised by Lenin and the Bolshevik Revolution, which was revised again by Mao and the Chinese Communist Revolution. Later revolutions in Cuba and Iran improvised further. This script is once again on display in the capitals of the Middle East and North Africa, and it will serve as the model for future revolutionary movements.

Book The Psychology of Global Mobility

Download or read book The Psychology of Global Mobility written by Stuart C. Carr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human mobility has been a defining feature of human social evolution. In a global community, the term "mobility" captures the full gamut of types, directions, and patterns of human movement. The psychology of mobility is important because movement is inherently behavioral. Much of the behavioral study of mobility has focused on the negative – examining the trauma of forced migration, or the health consequences of the lack of adaptation – but this work looks into the benefits of mobility, such as its impact on career capital and well-being. Recent years have witnessed a phenomenal increase in efforts to understand human mobility, by social scientists, think-tanks, and policymakers alike. The book focuses on the transformational potential of mobility for human development. The book details the historical, methodological, and theoretical trajectory of human mobility (Context), followed by sections on pre-departure incentives and predispositions (Motivation), influences on acculturation, health and community fit (Adjustment), and changes in career capital, overcoming bias, and diaspora networks (Performance).
