Book excerpt: A rare and fascinating glimpse inside New Zealand policing - from an officer at the heart of it all. A serial rapist is stalking South Auckland in 1980s New Zealand and police are stumped - they can't seem to find the man they call "The Ghost" before he strikes again. In this incredible memoir of his nearly four decades as a police officer, David "Chook" Henwood tells the true story of how he and his fellow officers developed the system that would put The Ghost, Joseph Thompson, behind bars - and change the way policing was done in this country forever. As a key player in the development of the nascent Criminal Profiling Unit, Henwood was at the heart of operations which locked up not just Thompson, but also the serial rapist Malcolm Rewa - and he would be an early and steadfast advocate for Teina Pora's innocence. Henwood, one of the country's most decorated and respected police officers, started out as a wet-behind-the-ears police cadet in South Auckland, his lifelong patch and home, and would progress to become one of the country's finest detectives and a highly respected investigator. From almost jovial relationships with small time criminals to dogged investigations to catch serious violent offenders, Henwood looks back at the nearly 40 years he spent as a sworn police officer and reflects on what's changed in this country - and what hasn't.

Cartoonists may not be able to topple tyrants or change the course of history, but they can lessen the climate of fear and bring courage to the victims of state bullying with their subversive drawings. In this book, you'll find dictators and wielders of power transformed into midgets, hotel porters, moustachioed horses, even a humble pear. Figures include: • Hitler • Stalin • Mussolini • Franco • Mao Zedong • Robert Mugabe Written by renowned cartoonist and commentator Tony Husband, this shrewd and funny pictorial history traces the fightback led by artists against tyranny and its figureheads.

Book Premodern Monsters A Varied Compilation of Pre modern Judeo Christian and Japanese Buddhist Monstrous Discourses

Download or read book Premodern Monsters A Varied Compilation of Pre modern Judeo Christian and Japanese Buddhist Monstrous Discourses written by Allan Wright and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monster Studies is a rising academic topic. Despite hesitancy at first, the subject is now examined by scholars of various academic interests and backgrounds. However, the dominant monster investigations are from the post-1900s. This volume focuses on Premodern monsters. The purpose of this volume is to examine various monsters from diverse cultures in order to indicate how each monstrous discourse derives from their mythology’s socio-cultural context. The volume examines several Monsters within their socio-cultural matrix. This includes a variety of monstrosities from diverse cultures and periods. Namely, the examined creatures, or perceived creatures, stem from the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament (Pauline epistles), Reformation England, the Japanese Noh play Dōjōji, Yamauba Myths, and Yōkai Relics from early modern Japanese Buddhism.

Book Monsters of Contact

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark van de Logt
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2018-06-21
  • ISBN : 0806161094
  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book Monsters of Contact written by Mark van de Logt and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A murderous whirlwind, an evil child-abducting witch-woman, a masked cannibal, terrifying scalped men, a mysterious man-slaying flint creature: the oral tradition of the Caddoan Indians is alive with monsters. Whereas Western historical methods and interpretations relegate such beings to the realms of myth and fantasy, Mark van de Logt argues in Monsters of Contact that creatures found in the stories of the Caddos, Wichitas, Pawnees, and Arikaras actually embody specific historical events and the negative effects of European contact: invasion, war, death, disease, enslavement, starvation, and colonialism. Van de Logt examines specific sites of historical interaction between American Indians and Europeans, from the outbreaks and effect of smallpox epidemics on the Arikaras, to the violence and enslavement Caddos faced at the hands of Hernando de Soto’s expedition, and Wichita encounters with Spanish missionaries and French traders in Texas. In each case he explains how, through Indian metaphor, seemingly unrelated stories of supernatural beings and occurrences translate into real people and events that figure prominently in western U.S. history. The result is a peeling away of layers of cultural values that, for those invested in Western historical traditions, otherwise obscure the meaning of such tales and their “monsters.” Although Western historical methods have become the standard in much of the world, van de Logt demonstrates that indigenous forms of history are no less valuable, and that oral traditions and myths can be useful sources of historical information. A daring interpretation of Caddoan lore, Monsters of Contact puts oral traditions at the center of historical inquiry and, in so doing, asks us to reconsider what makes a monster.

Book The Unmasking Style in Social Theory

Download or read book The Unmasking Style in Social Theory written by Peter Baehr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nature of unmasking in social theory, in revolutionary movements and in popular culture. Unmasking is not the same as scientific refutation or principled disagreement. When people unmask, they claim to rip off a disguise, revealing the true beneath the feigned. The author distinguishes two basic types of unmasking. The first, aimed at persons or groups, exposes hypocrisy and enmity, and is a staple of revolutionary movements. The second, aimed at ideas, exposes illusions and ideologies, and is characteristic of radical social theory since the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. The Unmasking Style in Social Theory charts the intellectual origins of unmasking, its shifting priorities, and its specific techniques in social theory. It also explores sociology’s relationship to the concept of unmasking through an analysis of writers who embrace, adapt or reshape its meaning. Such sociologists include Vilfredo Pareto, Karl Mannheim, Raymond Aron, Peter Berger, Pierre Bourdieu, Luc Boltanski and Christian Smith. Finally, taking conspiracy theories, accusations of social phobia and new concepts such as micro-aggression as examples of unmasking techniques, the author shows how unmasking contributes to the polarization and bitterness of much public discussion. Demonstrating how unmasking is baked into modern culture, yet arguing that alternatives to it are still possible, this book is, in sum, a compelling study of unmasking and its impact upon modern political life and social theory.
