Book Deficits and Desires

Download or read book Deficits and Desires written by Michael Tratner and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2002-03-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the effects on literary works of a little-noted economic development in the early twentieth century: individuals and governments alike began to regard going into debt as a normal and even valuable part of life. The author also shows, surprisingly, that the economic changes normalizing debt paralleled and intersected with changes in sexual discourse. In Victorian novels, sex and debt are considered dangerous activities that the young should avoid in order to save and invest toward eventual marriage and a home. In twentieth-century texts, however, it often seems acceptable to go into debt and engage in sex before marriage. These literary representations followed social transformations as both economic and sexual discourse moved from the logic of saving and production to the logic of circulation. In Keynesian economics and consumerism, governments and individuals were actually encouraged to borrow and to spend more in order to increase demand and keep money circulating. In twentieth-century sexual treatises, people were similarly encouraged to indulge their desires, as pent-up states were considered as deleterious to the physical body as they were to the economic. In this book, the author traces these social transformations by examining twentieth-century literary works and films that are structured around contrasts between repressive and expansive forms of economics and sexuality. He studies a range of authors, including James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Virginia Woolf, Ezra Pound, Zora Neale Hurston, and Frank Capra. The book ends with the 1960s, because after that decade deficits no longer seemed the cure for anything, and the advocacy of sexual indulgence dwindled. For half a century, however, the intersections of sexual and economic discourses created a sense that society was on the verge of a vast transformation. The artists studied in this book were fascinated by such a prospect, but remained ambivalent, as it seemed that their dreams of escaping dull bourgeois life and ending repression were becoming true because of the influence of the crassest economic policies.

Download or read book Mexican Revolution The Constitutionalist Years written by Charles C. Cumberland and published by Univ of TX + ORM. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The seven years with which this book concerns itself . . . must be thoroughly examined if one is to have a grasp of modern Mexican history.” —Military History of Texas and the Southwest The years 1913-1920 were the most critical years of the Mexican Revolution. This study of the period, a sequel to the author’s Mexican Revolution: Genesis under Madero, traces Mexico’s course through the anguish of civil war to the establishment of a tenuous new government, the codification of revolutionary aspirations in a remarkable constitution, and the emergence of an activist leadership determined to propel Mexico into the select company of developed nations. The narrative begins with Huerta’s overthrow of Madero in 1913 and the rise of Carranza’s Constitutionalist counterchallenge. It concludes with a summary of Carranza’s stormy term as constitutional president climaxed by his ouster and overthrow in a revolt spearheaded by Alvaro Obregón. Basing his study on a wide range of Mexican and US primary sources as well as pertinent secondary studies, Cumberland brings a mature and sophisticated analysis to his material; the result is a major contribution to the understanding of one of the twentieth century’s most significant revolutionary movements.

Solomon Singletary had no interest in establishing substantive relationships with women and even prided himself on his ability to remain distant while still getting what he wanted. That disposition is rocked when a chance encounter with one of his “victims” and her young son sparks something in him he never anticipated: to seek forgiveness, from her and himself. That quest opens up his mind and heart in ways no one expected, especially him. He accomplishes something significant: he admits he was wrong. Even more difficult is winning back Michele Williams, who still has feelings for Solomon but is reluctant to restart their romance. Amid the drama that envelopes Solomon’s quest comes another challenge: He discovers disheartening information about his best friend, Ray, and is once again forced to confront raw nerves and emotions. A Cold Piece of Work offers the rarest insight: A contemporary man revealing the depths of his emotions, vulnerabilities, and flaws. Readers who crave answers to the mysteries of the male mind will appreciate this unfettered, organic journey that lends honest, raw perspective and provides the how and why men act as they do in relationships.

Book Consuming Modernity

Download or read book Consuming Modernity written by Cheryl Krasnick Warsh and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positioning consumer culture in Canada within a wider international context, Consuming Modernity explores the roots of modern Western mass culture between 1919 and 1945, when the female worker, student, and homemaker relied on new products to raise their standards of living and separate themselves from oppressive traditional attitudes. Mass-produced consumer products promised to free up women to pursue other interests shaped by marketing campaigns, advertisements, films, and radio shows. Concerns over fashion, personal hygiene, body image, and health reflected these new expectations. This volume is a fascinating look at how the forces of consumerism defined and redefined a generation.
