Book The Secret Sayings of Ye Su

Download or read book The Secret Sayings of Ye Su written by Jay Williams and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secret Sayings of Ye Su: A Silk Road Gospel provides a translation of, introduction to, and commentary upon an extraordinary, previously unknown manuscript. This Christian gospel, though written in koine Greek, was obviously influenced by both Buddhist and Daoist ideas and probably derives from Tang dynasty China (8th or 9th century). The account of how the manuscript emerged in 1994 and how it came to be translated by Dr. Jay G. Williams is, in itself, quite fascinating. The author also describes the nature of the text and why he thinks it should be placed in the Tang dynasty period. He provides a concise introduction not only to the history of Buddhism and the indigenous religions of China during this period but also to the "Religion of Light," a form of Christianity that entered China in 638 A. D. The work ends with a line-by-line commentary on each of the seventy-two verses of this gospel. Although undoubtedly ancient, the work seems amazingly contemporary in its ideas, offering a unique and quite radical vision of Ye Su (Jesus) and his teachings. Neither orthodox nor gnostic, The Secret Sayings comments about such topics as the place of women and gays within the community, the nature of the kingdom, and the source of Christian hope in the "Source." Although faith is emphasized, doctrines and dogmas are not. A place is found for both the Heavenly Father and the Earthly Mother but alone neither is regarded as "ultimate." The fellowship of believers is emphasized, but value of the Church as an institution is seriously questioned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimated to date back to the very early Jesus movement, the lost Gospel known as Q offers a distinct and remarkable picture of Jesus and his significance--and one that differs markedly from that offered by its contemporary, the apostle Paul. Q presents Jesus as a prophetic critic of unbelief and a sage with the wisdom that can transform. In Q, the true meaning of the "kingdom of God" is the fulfillment of a just society through the transformation of the human relationships within it. Though this document has never been found, John Kloppenborg offers a succinct account of why scholars maintain it existed in the first place and demonstrates how they have been able to reconstruct its contents and wording from the two later Gospels that used it as a source: Matthew and Luke. Presented here in its entirety, as developed by the International Q Project, this Gospel reveals a very different portrait of Jesus than in much of the later canonical writings, challenging the way we think of Christian origins and the very nature and mission of Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Pulitzer Prize–winning author Jon Meacham explores the seven last sayings of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels, combining rich historical and theological insights to reflect on the true heart of the Christian story. For Jon Meacham, as for believers worldwide, the events of Good Friday and Easter reveal essential truths about Christianity. A former vestryman of Trinity Church Wall Street and St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, Meacham delves into that intersection of faith and history in this meditation on the seven phrases Jesus spoke from the cross. Beginning with “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” and ending with “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit,” Meacham captures for the reader how these words epitomize Jesus’s message of love, not hate; grace, not rage; and, rather than vengeance, extraordinary mercy. For each saying, Meacham composes an essay on the origins of Christianity and how Jesus’s final words created a foundation for oral and written traditions that upended the very order of the world. Writing in a tone more intimate than any of his previous works, Jon Meacham returns us to the moment that transformed Jesus from a historical figure into the proclaimed Son of God, worshiped by billions.

Book Did Jesus Really Say That the Unpopular Or Little Known Sayings of Jesus

Download or read book Did Jesus Really Say That the Unpopular Or Little Known Sayings of Jesus written by Edward H. Einem and published by Eloquent Books. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a little gem of a book. It is a short cut in concentrating Christ's directions for us today. It's particularly meaningful in our society where Jesus' words have frequently been hijacked. The author writes concisely on what have been "sound bytes" of the faith, people in our secular culture using these quotes without knowing either the source or the context. Reading this book is like having your own personal Bible teacher in the room with you." Carol Pohl, Retired Teacher, Green Valley, AZ. "This book clearly shows us Jesus spoke truth even when it hurt His popularity or endangered His life. This highly engaging and affirming book will open your eyes to Jesus' great relevancy in our world. Rev. Ed Einem, drawing upon almost 50 years of experience as a Lutheran pastor, dealing with people from many backgrounds and cultures, offers an insightful look into some of Jesus difficult sayings. You will be rewarded by taking a second look at some of Jesus' difficult sayings in this book. Or, if you are totally unfamiliar with Jesus' sayings you will be rewarded by getting to know Jesus whose name is the most well known in the world, but whose Person is still largely unknown to most." Rev Bruce Lieske, Pastor, Author, Winter Haven, FL. The Rev. Edward H. Einem, a Chaplain and Lutheran minister lives in Livonia, Michigan and is the founder of the ministry Project Compassion, which addresses the needs of the elderly who live in institutional settings.
