Book Unknowing and Astonishment

Download or read book Unknowing and Astonishment written by Christopher Scott and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a series of reflective essays, Canon Scott puts before us an understanding of the Church which goes beyond a managerial model. He urges us to consider again the place of prayer in our lives and to recognise how it changes and develops over time. Drawing on the traditional theology of the Eastern Churches, and linking this teaching closely with the liturgy, he shows how the cataphatic tradition of affirmation, is held in tension with the apophatic tradition of negation, the way of unknowing. Within this tension, ‘faith then holds before us the possibility of being drawn to the unapproachable light in sheer astonishment.’

Book Hope in the Dark

Download or read book Hope in the Dark written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2016-05-14 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] landmark book . . . Solnit illustrates how the uprisings that begin on the streets can upend the status quo and topple authoritarian regimes” (Vice). A book as powerful and influential as Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me, her Hope in the Dark was written to counter the despair of activists at a moment when they were focused on their losses and had turned their back to the victories behind them—and the unimaginable changes soon to come. In it, she makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable. Drawing on her decades of activism and a wide reading of environmental, cultural, and political history, Solnit argues that radicals have a long, neglected history of transformative victories, that the positive consequences of our acts are not always immediately seen, directly knowable, or even measurable, and that pessimism and despair rest on an unwarranted confidence about what is going to happen next. Now, with a moving new introduction explaining how the book came about and a new afterword that helps teach us how to hope and act in our unnerving world, she brings a new illumination to the darkness of our times in an unforgettable new edition of this classic book. “One of the best books of the 21st century.” —The Guardian “No writer has better understood the mix of fear and possibility, peril and exuberance that’s marked this new millennium.” —Bill McKibben, New York Times–bestselling author of Falter “An elegant reminder that activist victories are easily forgotten, and that they often come in extremely unexpected, roundabout ways.” —The New Yorker

Book Letter from an Unknown Woman and Other Stories

Download or read book Letter from an Unknown Woman and Other Stories written by Stefan Zweig and published by Pushkin Press. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These four Stefan Zweig stories, newly translated by the award-winning Anthea Bell, are among his most celebrated and compelling work. The titular tale is a devastating depiction of unrequited love, which inspired a classic Hollywood film, directed by Max Ophüls and starring Joane Fontaine. Elsewhere in the collection, a young man mistakes the girl he loves for her sister, two erstwhile lovers meet after an age spent apart, and a married woman repays a debt of gratitude to her childhood sweetheart. Expertly paced, laced with the acutely accurate psychological detail and empathy that are Zweig's trademarks, this is a powerful addition to Pushkin's growing collection of his work.

Book Jesus Christ that Unknown

Download or read book Jesus Christ that Unknown written by Hadi F. Eid and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this period of theological ferment unmatched since the first Christian century, we once again have different ways of formulating Jesus’s significance and identity while remaining within the one faith. We are being called to read the Scripture with a new approach suitable to our time and place. We must reclaim Jesus again so that his living, updated legacy will be handed on to the next generation throughout this twenty-first century. This ferment is creating many levels of belief in the story of Jesus. Today we have to admit that we live within the anonymity of an evolving universe where the ultimate mystery that Jesus identified as our Divine Father is the source and goal of all creation. We cannot be genuinely human if we are not related to this divine mystery that pervades the human experience—the one we live within as fish live in the sea.

  • Author : Voline
  • Publisher : PM Press
  • Release : 2019-05-01
  • ISBN : 1629636002
  • Pages : 938 pages

Download or read book Unknown Revolution written by Voline and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 938 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the untold story of the Russian Revolution: its antecedents, its far-reaching changes, its betrayal by Bolshevik terror, and the massive resistance of non-Bolshevik revolutionaries. This in-depth, eyewitness history written by Voline, an outspoken activist in the Russian Revolution, is accompanied by a biography of the author by Rudolf Rocker and a contemporary introduction by anarchist historian Iain McKay. Significant attention is given to what the author describes as “struggles for the real Social Revolution”; that is, the uprising of the sailors and workers of Kronstadt in 1921, and the peasant movement that Nestor Makhno led in Ukraine. These movements, which sought to defend the social revolution from destruction by the politicians, provide important material for a clearer understanding of both the original objectives of the Russian Revolution and the problems with which all revolutions with far-reaching social objectives have to contend. Drawing on the revolutionary press of the time, Voline reveals the deep cleavage between the objectives of the libertarians and those of the Bolsheviks, differences which the latter “resolved” by ruthlessly eliminating all who stood in their way in the struggle for power. This edition is a translation of the full text of La Révolution inconnue, originally published in French in 1947. It reinstates material omitted from earlier English-language editions and reproduces the complete text of the original volumes.
