Download or read book Old College Aberystwyth written by J. Roger Webster and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old College, Aberystwyth, is one of Britain's most significant nineteenth century buildings, its development reflecting the evolution of architectural styles from the Picturesque Gothic of the 1790s to the Queen Anne Revival of the 1890s. The present building has its origins in Castle House, John Nash's first excursion into Gothic, designed to the specifications of Sir Uvadale Price, the leader of the late-18th-century Picturesque movement. In the 1860s, wings were added to the north and south of the house, with the intention of creating one of the most opulent hotels of the Railway Age. The bankruptcy of Thomas Savin, the Hotel's owner, in 1866 resulted in the Hotel being abandoned. The uncompleted building was then bought by the founders of the University College of Wales, and John Pollard Seddon was invited to adapt it for its new purposes.

But he hadn't believed that it really existed until he met Uncle Vanya. Now the old man's story catapults him into the neon-drenched wilderness of Aberystwyth Prom in search of a girl who mysteriously disappeared thirty years ago. Soon Louie finds his fate depending on two most unlikely talismans - a ticket to Hughesovka and a Russia cosmonaut's sock.

Download or read book No Distinction Of Sex written by Carol Dyhouse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939 women represented nearly one quarter of the student population in British universities. Though tantamount to a "social revolution" in the eyes of many contemporaries, the process has recieved scant attention from historians. Whilst prejudice and hostility towards women lingered on in Oxford and Cambridge, it has often been assumed that the female presence was welcomed elsewhere. The younger, civic universities commonly advertised themselves as making "no distinction of sex" in admissions, appointments, or in educational policy.; This work of social history, based on extensive archival research, examines the truth of these claims and explores the experiences of women teachers and students in this period.
