Book Intention and Interpretation A Short History

Download or read book Intention and Interpretation A Short History written by Ralf Grüttemeier and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intention plays a complex role in human utterances. The interpretation of literary texts is a strong case in point: for about two hundred years there have been conflicting views about whether, and how much, authorial intention should matter when professional readers interpret literature. These debates grew increasingly fierce during the post-World War II period, the landmarks of which were the notions of intentional fallacy and the death of the author. Seventy-odd years later, there is still no consensus in sight. What has always been neglected in the debates around authorial intention, however, is a reflection on the historical dimension of the debate and how historically bound each of the theoretical positions in the debate were. This book focusses precisely on the historical dimension of authorial intention, providing a systematic historical reconstruction of the importance ascribed to it in literary texts from Classical Greece to the present day, and including a chapter on authorial intention in jurisdiction and legal interpretation from a historical perspective. The book reconstructs a typology of the most important concepts of intention in interpretation for diachronic and synchronic use. At the same time it offers insights from a field-theoretical perspective into how literary studies as a discipline works over time and how notions of intention and interpretation help create forms of literary knowledge.

Book The Politics of Digital Pharmacology

Download or read book The Politics of Digital Pharmacology written by Felix Heidenreich and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digitization is transforming our world economically, culturally, and psychologically. The influx of new forms of communication, networking, and business opportunities, as well as new types of distraction, self-observation, and control into our societies represents an epochal challenge. Following Bernard Stiegler's concept of pharmacology, Felix Heidenreich and Florian Weber-Stein propose to view these new forms as digital pharmaka. Properly dosed, they can enable new self-relationships and forms of sociality; in the case of overdose, however, there is a risk of intoxication. In this essay, Felix Heidenreich, Florian Weber-Stein, and, in a detailed interview, Bernard Stiegler analyze this complex change in our world and develop new skills to use digital pharmaka.

Book Antiquarian Literature in the Sixteenth Century

Download or read book Antiquarian Literature in the Sixteenth Century written by Joan Carbonell Manils and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the sixteenth century, antiquarian studies (the study of the material past, comprising modern archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics) rose in Europe in parallel to the technical development of the printing press. Some humanists continued to prefer the manuscript form to disseminate their findings – as numerous fair copies of sylloges and treatises attest –, but slowly the printed medium grew in popularity, with its obvious advantages but also its many challenges. As antiquarian printed works appeared, the relationship between manuscript and printed sources also became less linear: printed copies of earlier works were annotated to serve as a means of research, and printed works could be copied by hand – partially or even completely. This book explores how antiquarian literature (collections of inscriptions, treatises, letters...) developed throughout the sixteenth century, both in manuscript and in print; how both media interacted with each other, and how these printed antiquarian works were received, as attested by the manuscript annotations left by their early modern owners and readers.

Book The Christian Right in Europe

Download or read book The Christian Right in Europe written by Gionathan Lo Mascolo and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the success of the US Christian Right and the rise of the global far-right, ultraconservative Christians in Europe are joining forces and seek to reshape Europe. By assembling in anti-gender movements and sharing anti-Muslim narratives, they actively influence the political landscape and shape government policies. The contributors offer new perspectives on the protagonists and the entangled networks that work to abolish liberal democracy in Europe behind the scenes. This anthology is the first to bring together case studies on the Christian Right in over 20 European countries, providing a transnational perspective and an accessible insight for clergy, politicians, and academics alike.

Download or read book Global Authoritarianism written by International Research Group on Authoritarianism and Counter-Strategies and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are witnessing a worldwide resurgence of reactionary ideologies and movements, combined with an escalating assault on democratic institutions and structures. Nevertheless, most studies of these phenomena remain anchored in a methodological nationalism, while comparative research is almost entirely limited to the Global North. Yet, authoritarian transformations in the South — and the struggles against them — have not only been just as dramatic as those in the North but also preceded them, and consequently have been studied by Southern scholars for many years. This volume brings together the work of more than 15 scholar-activists from across the Global South, combining in-depth studies of regional processes of authoritarian transformation with a global perspective on authoritarian capitalism. With a foreword by Verónica Gago.

Book Confabulations

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Macardle
  • Publisher : Durham Modern Languages
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9780907310679
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Confabulations written by Peter Macardle and published by Durham Modern Languages. This book was released on 2007 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, a companion to Peter Macardle's edition of the *Confabulationes*, examines the ways in which the colloquies relate to their Cologne background, to the major contemporary colloquy collections (particularly Erasmus's *Colloquia* and Mosellanus's *Paedologia*), and to the humanist renewal of Classical Latin. It also looks in detail at the documentary traces of Schotten's career, and of his networks of friendship and patronage, and tries to understand how he fitted into the structures of a university which has often been (wrongly) understood as hostile to humanism. Based on primary archival material, this is the only full-length study of this underrated German humanist's life and work.
