Book The Synoptic Gospels and the Book of Acts Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Synoptic Gospels and the Book of Acts Classic Reprint written by D. A. Hayes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Synoptic Gospels and the Book of Acts So many volumes have been published in this field that it may seem a work of supererogation to add to the list. Our only excuse for doing so is that we have made a new pre scutation and arrangement Of the existing material, and that we have attempted to give it added interest and life by joining with it a study of the personalities of the writers involved and of the influence of their personalities upon their books. As far as we know, this has not been done before in the same manner or to the same degree. One of the writer's students gave a series of lectures in a Western college upon Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and he reports that at the end of the course the president of the school thanked him for them and said: Do you know, I never more than half believed before that those evangel ists were real men! Now they will be living personalities for me. That has been one aim in this and the preced ing volumes - to give added interest to the study of the New Testament books, because in them we were able to see the manifested characters of the men who wrote them, and to realize that however little we might know of these authors, they yet were not mere shadows or myths, but real men with real messages taken out of their own real experience in life. Too many people have only half believed that these authors were real men, and for that reason they may have found themselves only half interested in their writings. Book Is He Out There

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Laffan
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2022-12-01
  • ISBN : 1782847766
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Is He Out There written by Paul Laffan and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is He Out There? is an interdisciplinary examination of the Christian reaction to Dawkinss The God Delusion. That reaction has offered a wide range of counter-arguments, among them: that Dawkinss demonstration of how God almost certainly doesnt exist addresses an out-dated conception of God; that science and religion are not conflictual as Dawkins contends and indeed may well be converging upon an understanding of how God acts in the universe; that Dawkinss denigration of the Bible depends on an overly literal reading; and that Dawkins assumes a narrative of progress in which human beings take the place of God in controlling the course of history. Is He Out There? responds to these arguments in the context of current scientific understanding, biblical criticism and philosophy. Paul Laffan demonstrates how the desire to meet the challenge posed by Dawkinss viewpoint has led to the perversion of scientific theories and accepted positions in other important fields of inquiry. It suggests that Christianity is wedded to a God who is the cause of the universe a classical conception of cause that is anachronistic; that denying the Bible was read for most of the Christian era as offering a literal account of divine creation is a significant misrepresentation of doctrinal history; and that a complete dismissal of progress requires the dismissal of scientific achievement. The author considers the extent to which attractive, secular values like tolerance and freedom of opinion are Christian in source and whether moral systems require God to underwrite them. The wide-ranging nature of Is He Out There? not only provides a review of the state of contemporary Christian apology but is a measured address of the arguments put forward in The God Delusion and indeed of the substantive commentary on Dawkinss thesis.

Book The Authentic Gospel of Jesus

Download or read book The Authentic Gospel of Jesus written by Geza Vermes and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can be no doubt that Jesus, 'a religious genius' as Geza Vermes describes him, lived and taught in Palestine some 2000 years ago. The influence he has had is incalculable. How though can we distinguish between the doctrines shaped to the needs of the burgeoning Christian church and the original views laid out by Jesus himself? How can we dig back through the additions, misinterpretations and confusions of later writers and two millennia of tradition to get back to the authentic gospel of Jesus? In his new book, Vermes subjects all the sayings of Jesus to brilliantly informed scrutiny. The result is a book of unique value and novelty--scraping aside the accretions of centuries to come as close as we can hope to be to the true Jesus.
