Download or read book Records of the Revolutionary War Third Edition with Index to Saffell s List of Virginia Soldiers in the Revolution by J T McAllister 1913 written by W. T. R. Saffell and published by . This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Saffell, a Counsellor and Agent for Revolutionary Claims, prepared this work as a reference source for those researching information on officers and soldiers serving in the Revolutionary War. This book, including the first two editions, was used extensively during the latter-half of the 19th century by historians investigating the different locations and movements of the army, and in showing the whereabouts of individual officers, regiments, detachments, and corps, as well as in giving the precise dates of important events. Moreover, the manuscript, which contains rosters and service records of approximately 15,000 soldiers, proved invaluable for those searching for information on their ancestors. Specifically, this work contains the military and financial correspondence of distinguished officers; names of officers and privates of regiments, companies, and corps, with the dates of their commissions and enlistments; general orders of Washington, Lee and Greene at Germantown and Valley Forge; a list of Distinguished prisoners of war; the time of their capture, exchange, etc.; the Half-Pay Acts of the Continental Congress; the Revolutionary Pension Laws; and a list of the officers of the Continental Army who acquired the right to half-pay, commutation, and lands. Also bound with this book is, the Index to Saffell's List of Virginia Soldiers in the Revolution, by J. T. McAllister, published in 1913, which enhances the utility of the work. Softcover, (1894), reprinted 2011, Index, 606 pp.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the standard reference work on the officers of the Revolutionary War, containing an alphabetically arranged list, with service records, of 14,000 officers of the Continental Army, including many officers of the Militia and State Troops who served during the Revolution. The information given includes the soldier's rank, dates of service, when and where wounded, taken prisoner, exchanged, or killed, etc., with the name of the state in which service was rendered and a designation of company and command. Much of the data not being available from official records, other reliable sources of information were consulted and data were added therefrom in order to complete the service record of each officer. Some 6,000 names not recorded in the earlier edition of 1893 were added and a great many records revised and completed for the last published edition of 1914. Also includes a list of French officers who served in the U.S. Army, as well as alphabetical and chronological lists of battles and skirmishes. ." . . This is the best and basic source for identification of Revolutionary War officers."--The Virginia Genealogist (Jan.-March 1974).SEE ALSO THESE RELATED REVOLUTIONARY WAR BOOKS AND CDs: Loyalists in the American Revolution Revolutionary War Pension Records

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of documents, including many previously unpublished, details the role of the Army engineers in the American Revolution. Lacking trained military engineers, the Americans relied heavily on foreign officers, mostly from France, for sorely needed technical assistance. Native Americans joined the foreign engineer officers to plan and carry out offensive and defensive operations, direct the erection of fortifications, map vital terrain, and lay out encampments. During the war Congress created the Corps of Engineers with three companies of engineer troops as well as a separate geographer's department to assist the engineers with mapping. Both General George Washington and Major General Louis Lebéque Duportail, his third and longest serving Chief Engineer, recognized the disadvantages of relying on foreign powers to fill the Army's crucial need for engineers. America, they contended, must train its own engineers for the future. Accordingly, at the war's end, they suggested maintaining a peacetime engineering establishment and creating a military academy. However, Congress rejected the proposals, and the Corps of Engineers and its companies of sappers and miners mustered out of service. Eleven years passed before Congress authorized a new establishment, the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers.
