Download or read book Arts in Earnest written by Daniel W. Patterson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arts in Earnest explores the unique folklife of North Carolina from ruddy ducks to pranks in the mill. Traversing from Murphy to Manteo, these fifteen essays demonstrate the importance of North Carolina’s continually changing folklife. From decoy carving along the coast, to the music of tobacco chants and the blues of the Piedmont, to the Jack tales of the mountains, Arts in Earnest reflects the story of a people negotiating their rapidly changing social and economic environment. Personal interviews are an important element in the book. Laura Lee, an elderly black woman from Chatham County, describes the quilts she made from funeral flower ribbons; witnesses and friends each remember varying details of the Duke University football player who single-handedly vanquished a gang of would-be muggers; Clyde Jones leads a safari through his backyard, which is filled with animals made of wood and cement that represent nontraditional folk art; the songs and sermon of a Primitive Baptist service flow together as one—“it tills you up all over”; Durham bluesman Willie Trice, one of a handful of Durham musicians who recorded in the 1930s and early 1940s, remembers when the active tobacco warehouses offered ready audiences—“They’d tip us a heap of change to play some music”; and Goldsboro tobacco auctioneer H. L. “Speed” Riggs chants 460 words per minute, five to six times faster than a normal conversational rate.

Download or read book The Transnational Good Life written by Linda Jean Hall and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Transnational "Good Life" is an ethnographic study of the founding and maintenance of social organizations by emigrants from Ecuador in politically contested U.S. public spaces. By following in the footsteps of W. E. B. Du Bois who coined the term "double consciousness," this book posits that racialization, an inherent characteristic of Global Apartheid, uniquely influenced the construction of complex Ecuadorian migrant identities in the U.S. The thematic focus is on the intersection of the empowerment produced in the social clubs with the desire of individual members to acquire the American Dream and the good life. This is an "anthropology of the good," which brings to the forefront the lived experiences of immigrants claiming a high level of pre-migratory preparedness and success in the U.S. The Transnational "Good Life" is an analysis of evolving relationships within and outside the loosely connected network of Ecuadorian social clubs in the unique cultural milieus of Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City.

Download or read book Data Profiling written by Ziawasch Abedjan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data profiling refers to the activity of collecting data about data, {i.e.}, metadata. Most IT professionals and researchers who work with data have engaged in data profiling, at least informally, to understand and explore an unfamiliar dataset or to determine whether a new dataset is appropriate for a particular task at hand. Data profiling results are also important in a variety of other situations, including query optimization, data integration, and data cleaning. Simple metadata are statistics, such as the number of rows and columns, schema and datatype information, the number of distinct values, statistical value distributions, and the number of null or empty values in each column. More complex types of metadata are statements about multiple columns and their correlation, such as candidate keys, functional dependencies, and other types of dependencies. This book provides a classification of the various types of profilable metadata, discusses popular data profiling tasks, and surveys state-of-the-art profiling algorithms. While most of the book focuses on tasks and algorithms for relational data profiling, we also briefly discuss systems and techniques for profiling non-relational data such as graphs and text. We conclude with a discussion of data profiling challenges and directions for future work in this area.

Book Beaufort s Old Burying Ground North Carolina

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beaufort, bordered by the waters of Taylor's Creek and Beaufort Inlet, is a picturesque, thriving coastal town, filled with rich traditions and a unique North Carolina heritage. Historic homes and shops, many predating the birth of George Washington, stand majestically in the shadows of graceful live oak trees. The town's sidewalks are lined with white picket fences, distinguished by a rainbow assortment of well-tended flowers. Centered in this beautiful, historic town, the Old Burying Ground is a fascinating treasuretrove of little-known seacoast stories and legends that have shaped Beaufort's identity, from its maritime roots before the Revolutionary War to the present. In Beaufort's Old Burying Ground, you will enjoy a visual tour of one of the East Coast's most interesting and historic cemeteries, where you will learn the stories of patriots, privateers, and pirates who played a strategic role in the area's history and were buried within the cemetery's confines. Through these different tales and legends, an extraordinary tapestry is woven of star-crossed lovers, victims of the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1864, the American Indian "Wars and Massacres," family histories, Confederate spies' daring deeds, shipwrecks, and the sadness of young lives snuffed out too soon.
