Book Antiochene Theoria in the Writings of Theodore of Mopsuestia and Theodoret of Cyrus

Download or read book Antiochene Theoria in the Writings of Theodore of Mopsuestia and Theodoret of Cyrus written by Richard J. Perhai and published by Augsburg Fortress Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical scholars have often contrasted the exegesis of the early church fathers from the eastern region and school of Syrian Antioch against that of the school of Alexandria. The Antiochenes have often been described as strictly historical-literal exegetes in contrast to the allegorical exegesis of the Alexandrians. Patristic scholars now challenge those stereotypes, some even arguing that few differences existed between the two groups. This work agrees that both schools were concerned with a literal and spiritual reading. But, it also tries to show, through analysis of Theodore and Theodorets exegesis and use of the term theria, that how they integrated the literal-theological readings often remained quite distinct from the Alexandrians. For the Antiochenes, the term theria did not mean allegory, but instead stood for a range of perceptionsprophetic, christological, and contemporary. It is in these insights that we find the deep wisdom to help modern readers interpret Scripture theologically.

Book Are We Missing Something

Download or read book Are We Missing Something written by Keith Dorricott and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a biblical scholar and church elder, this ambitious and thought-provoking guide is designed to examine and explore beliefs that are prevalent in the evangelical Christian world today. New churches and denominations are emerging at a rapid pace, but are these congregations worshipping God in the way that He intended? Using Old and New Testament scripture, Dorricott traces the concept of God living among a people on the earth and shows how the Bible provides answers to fundamental questions such as: Why are there so many Christian churches? Can we be true Christians without belonging to a church? Is the apostles' teaching relevant in the twenty-first century? Is the New Testament just first-century history, or is it also a blueprint for us? Is all worship acceptable to God? By challenging all true followers of Jesus Christ to set aside conventional thinking and focus on the true meaning of God's house, Dorricott provides a path of genuine study and reflection that will guide all those who wish to examine and reaffirm their service in unity to God.

Book Role of the Holy Spirit in Protestant Systematic Theology

Download or read book Role of the Holy Spirit in Protestant Systematic Theology written by Wilson Varkey and published by Langham Creative Projects. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a meticulously researched text on pneumatology which puts the major pneumatological issues together without confining to the traditional way of dealing with the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Although pneumatology has been a neglected field in theological discussions of the past, there is a renewal of interest among theologians on pneumatology today. This renewal of interest has led to the formation of this work on the role of the Holy Spirit in the Protestant Systematic Theology. Through highlighting the role and significance of the Holy Spirit in the whole divine action, this volume contends that pneumatology is not a dull theological locus, but rather an essential theological disposition relevant for today. The detailed arguments found within challenge and inspire the contemporary pneumatological discussions as it relates to all the facets of theological reflection and action.

Book Enlightenment Contested

Download or read book Enlightenment Contested written by Jonathan I. Israel and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-10-12 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Israel presents the first major reassessment of the Western Enlightenment for a generation. Continuing the story he began in the best-selling Radical Enlightenment , and now focusing his attention on the first half of the eighteenth century, he returns to the original sources to offer a groundbreaking new perspective on the nature and development of the most important currents in modern thought. Israel traces many of the core principles of Western modernity to their roots in the social, political, and philosophical ferment of this period: the primacy of reason, democracy, racial equality, feminism, religious toleration, sexual emancipation, and freedom of expression. He emphasizes the dual character of the Enlightenment, and the bitter struggle between on the one hand a generally dominant, anti-democratic mainstream, supporting the monarchy, aristocracy, and ecclesiastical authority, and on the other a largely repressed democratic, republican, and 'materialist' radical fringe. He also contends that the supposedly separate French, British, German, Dutch, and Italian enlightenments interacted to such a degree that their study in isolation gives a hopelessly distorted picture. A work of dazzling and highly accessible scholarship, Enlightenment Contested will be the definitive reference point for historians, philosophers, and anyone engaged with this fascinating period of human development.
