Book Advances in Remote Sensing for Infrastructure Monitoring

Download or read book Advances in Remote Sensing for Infrastructure Monitoring written by Vernon Singhroy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides international case studies of practical and advanced methods using satellite images integrated with other airborne, drone images and field data to monitor infrastructure. The book is timely, as infrastructure spending by national governments is increasing and robust monitoring techniques are needed to keep pace with climate change impacts affecting infrastructures globally. The expert international contributions that comprise the book provide examples of advanced methods using InSAR, high-resolution optical and radar images, LIDAR, UAV, geophysical techniques and their applications to civil infrastructure. The case studies focus on high-resolution, rapid time-series radar interferometry to monitor highways, railways, pipelines, bridges, urban, and water conveyance infrastructures. Other case studies use optical and radar images to characterize urban infrastructure and monitor damages from floods, oil spills and conflicts. The case studies are global focusing on infrastructure projects in Canada, Dominica Guyana, India Italy, Syria Taiwan, United States and the United Kingdom. This compilation of selected case studies will provide useful guidelines for the civil infrastructure characterization and monitoring communities. The book will be of interest to infrastructure consultants and professionals, scientific communities in earth observation and advanced imaging methods, and researchers and professors in earth sciences, climate change, and civil and geoengineering.

Book Field Instrumentation and Measured Response of the I 295 Cable stayed Bridge

Download or read book Field Instrumentation and Measured Response of the I 295 Cable stayed Bridge written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first report describes the results of a field study of the live load responses of a segmentally constructed prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge. The main span of the test structure consists of twin box girders connected by delta frames. Known vehicular loadings were placed statically at various points along the bridge. Strains measured during this loading were compared with those obtained from a finite element model of the bridge. Strain trends predicted by the finite element model were in good agreement with the measured strain trends. Quantitative agreement was fair, at least in part because of the high stiffness of the bridge and the limitations on the magnitude of load that could be applied. The second report describes the results of a field study of the thermal responses of a cable-stayed bridge. Data were gathered from the I-295 James River Bridge, a precast segmental concrete bridge with a cable-stayed main span consisting of twin box girders connected by delta frames. The thermal gradient and associated thermal strains in the box girders and pylons were measured using an extensive array of thermocouples and strain-gaged reinforcing bars installed at selected locations in the main-span box girder and south pylon. The temperature and strain response data were compared with that predicted from detailed finite element models of the structure using both frame and plate elements. Comparison revealed a complex three-dimensional strain pattern dependent on the wind direction and the angle of solar incidence. Simplified beam element models were unable to predict many of the observed local variations in thermal strain, which are influenced by wind direction, solar heating direction, proximity to the web, and the existence of parapets monolithic with the deck. Three-dimensional finite element models appear to be more capable of predicting the kind of three-dimensional strains observed, but quantitative agreement with the observed thermal strains was limited at best.

Book Thermal Stresses and Temperature Control of Mass Concrete

Download or read book Thermal Stresses and Temperature Control of Mass Concrete written by Zhu Bofang and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of controlling mass concrete temperatures range from relatively simple to complex and from inexpensive too costly. Depending on a particular situation, it may be advantageous to use one or more methods over others. Based on the author's 50 years of personal experience in designing mass concrete structures, Thermal Stresses and Temperature Control of Mass Concrete provides a clear and rigorous guide to selecting the right techniques to meet project-specific and financial needs. New techniques such as long time superficial thermal insulation, comprehensive temperature control, and MgO self-expansive concrete are introduced. - Methods for calculating the temperature field and thermal stresses in dams, docks, tunnels, and concrete blocks and beams on elastic foundations - Thermal stress computations that take into account the influences of all factors and simulate the process of construction - Analytical methods for determining thermal and mechanical properties of concrete - Formulas for determining water temperature in reservoirs and temperature loading of arched dams - New numerical monitoring methods for mass and semi-mature aged concrete

Book Potential Impacts of Climate Change on U S Transportation

Download or read book Potential Impacts of Climate Change on U S Transportation written by Division on Earth and Life Studies and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-07-16 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the Division on Earth and Life Studies (DELS) have released the pre-publication version of TRB Special Report 290, The Potential Impacts of Climate Change on U.S. Transportation, which explores the consequences of climate change for U.S. transportation infrastructure and operations. The report provides an overview of the scientific consensus on the current and future climate changes of particular relevance to U.S. transportation, including the limits of present scientific understanding as to their precise timing, magnitude, and geographic location; identifies potential impacts on U.S. transportation and adaptation options; and offers recommendations for both research and actions that can be taken to prepare for climate change. The book also summarizes previous work on strategies for reducing transportation-related emissions of carbon dioxide--the primary greenhouse gas--that contribute to climate change. Five commissioned papers used by the committee to help develop the report, a summary of the report, and a National Academies press release associated with the report are available online. DELS, like TRB, is a division of the National Academies, which include the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council.
