  • Author : Stephanie Downes
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-01-13

Download or read book Feeling Things written by Stephanie Downes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary essay collection investigates the various interactions of people, feelings, and things throughout premodern Europe. It focuses on the period before mass production, when limited literacy often prioritised material methods of communication. The subject of materiality has been of increasing significance in recent historical inquiry, alongside growing emphasis on the relationships between objects, emotions, and affect in archaeological and sociological research. The historical intersections between materiality and emotions, however, have remained under-theorised, particularly with respect to artefacts that have continuing resonance over extended periods of time or across cultural and geographical space. Feeling Things addresses the need to develop an appropriate cross-disciplinary theoretical framework for the analysis of objects and emotions in European history, with special attention to the need to track the shifting emotional valencies of objects from the past to the present, and from one place and cultural context to another. The collection draws together an international group of historians, art historians, curators, and literary scholars working on a variety of cultural, literary, visual, and material sources. Objects considered include books, letters, prosthetics, religious relics, shoes, stone, and textiles. Many of these have been preserved in international galleries, museums, and archives, while others have remained in their original locations, even as their contexts have changed over time. The chapters consider the ways in which emotions such as despair, fear, grief, hope, love, and wonder become inscribed in and ascribed to these items, producing 'emotional objects' of significance and agency. Such objects can be harnessed to create, affirm, or express individual relationships, as, for example, in religious devotion and practice, or in the construction of cultural, communal, and national identities.

Book Project Pre Check

Download or read book Project Pre Check written by R. Andrew Davison and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projects which implement major business and technology change have been, and will continue to be, risky ventures. The chance of success is generally well below 50%. However, there are well established, proven practices that can reduce the risks of failure dramatically. The challenge is to identify and apply the best practices that deliver maximum value for each change initiative. Project Pre-Check gathers these best practices for consideration by a project's key stakeholders, the guiding coalition for a change. It is based on this premise: if the key stakeholders for a given change are actively involved in and agree with each decision, and all the vital decisions are addressed, the project will be successful. Project Pre-Check includes three building blocks to ensure project success; Stakeholders, Processes and the Decision Framework. These building blocks provide the key decision makers with a roadmap to success and the best practice framework to ensure successful change. Project Pre-Check includes planning, governance and project assessment processes to facilitate active stakeholder involvement very early in a project's life cycle. It enables rapid assessment of stakeholder agreement on 125 key decision areas to identify gaps that may require remedial action. It can be applied effectively in the pre-launch stages, as part of or immediately after project initiation, up until solution delivery and on a release by release basis. Whenever it's used, it will help identify and remove those fatal flaws that can lead to project ruin.

Book excerpt: The elegant, ultra-modern SS Koombana arrived in Western Australia in March 1909; after only three years of service in the North West of Australia, the ship and her entire complement disappeared in a late-summer cyclone off the Pilbara coast in 1912. All 156 lives were lost but the wreck was never found. This thoroughly researched and compelling book comes closer than ever before to solving the mystery of Australia’s most significant maritime disaster. Author Annie Boyd spent months camping along the coast, diving and investigating wrecks, researching the Koombana, and meeting with descendants of those lost in the tragedy. This insightful account is the culmination of her work, which includes a 20,000 page online resource with background material and primary sources.
