It is the fall of 1951 at Mount St. Gabriel’s, an all-girls school tucked away in the mountains of North Carolina. Tildy Stratton, the undisputed queen bee of her class, befriends Chloe Starnes, a new student recently orphaned by the untimely and mysterious death of her mother. Their friendship fills a void for both girls but also sets in motion a chain of events that will profoundly affect the course of many lives, including the girls’ young teacher and the school’s matriarch, Mother Suzanne Ravenel. Fifty years on, the headmistress relives one pivotal night, trying to reconcile past and present, reaching back even further to her own senior year at the school, where the roots of a tragedy are buried. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told in alternating timelines, THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED examines the risks we take for love, the scars too deep to heal, and the endings we can’t bring ourselves to see coming. Twenty-eight-year-old Georgia Stanton has to start over after she gave up almost everything in a brutal divorce—the New York house, the friends, and her pride. Now back home at her late great-grandmother’s estate in Colorado, she finds herself face-to-face with Noah Harrison, the bestselling author of a million books where the cover is always people nearly kissing. He’s just as arrogant in person as in interviews, and she’ll be damned if the good-looking writer of love stories thinks he’s the one to finish her grandmother’s final novel...even if the publisher swears he’s the perfect fit. Noah is at the pinnacle of his career. With book and movie deals galore, there isn’t much the “golden boy” of modern fiction hasn’t accomplished. But he can’t walk away from what might be the best book of the century—the one his idol, Scarlett Stanton, left unfinished. Coming up with a fitting ending for the legendary author is one thing, but dealing with her beautiful, stubborn, cynical great-granddaughter, Georgia, is quite another. But as they read Scarlett’s words in both the manuscript and her box of letters, they start to realize why Scarlett never finished the book—it’s based on her real-life romance with a World War II pilot, and the ending isn’t a happy one. Georgia knows all too well that love never works out, and while the chemistry and connection between her and Noah is undeniable, she’s as determined as ever to learn from her great-grandmother’s mistakes—even if it means destroying Noah’s career.

Download or read book The Stars of Liberty written by Morsheda Amin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about me becoming able to figure out the beauty of the source. Our creative potential is endless. We enjoy our creative process and are willing to use all our will to manifest our dreams. But one thing is missing. We don’t know how to receive the creation where we are included with our creative power. To receive creation, we want to be aligned with the universe by dissolving the ego and the barriers that lie between us and unconditional love. When we are aligned with the universe, we are relaxed. Our relaxation allows us to catch the creation with wonderment. And here, we enter the world of fascination, enchantment, splendor. It seems our life is a gift from a higher entity. We all are benefited with the gift, but we don’t know about the endless possibilities of the gift. We don’t know it because we don’t know how to receive the creation in our hearts. In my book, I described who we are in creation and how we can be intimate with the creation to make us free from the sarcastic world. This book is a metaphor. It is all about what works for us and what doesn’t work for us. We literally can liberate ourselves if we are able to harness the management of relationships with God and all living beings surrounding us. This is not a religious book. It is all spirituality and how we are already being benefited with spirituality without even knowing it. I just tried to make a bridge over the gap of ignorance. I realized something, and I am asking others to realize the same thing so they can be free as me.

Download or read book In This House of Brede written by Rumer Godden and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following World War II, a British widow joins a Benedictine monastery in this poignant New York Times bestseller from the author of Black Narcissus. For most of her adult life, Philippa Talbot has been a successful British professional. Now in her forties, the World War II–widow has made a startling decision: She’s giving up her civil service career and elite social standing to join a convent as a postulant Roman Catholic nun. In Sussex in the south of England, Philippa begins her new life inside Brede Abbey, a venerable, 130-year-old Benedictine monastery. Taking her place among a diverse group of extraordinary women, young and old, she is welcomed into the surprisingly rich and complex world of the devout, whom faith, fate, and circumstance have led there. From their personal stories, both uplifting and heartbreaking, Philippa draws great strength in the weeks, months, and years that follow, as the confidence, conflicts, and poignant humanity of her fellow sisters serve to validate her love and sacred purpose. But a time of great upheaval in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church approaches as the winds of change blow at gale force. And for the financially troubled Brede and the acolytes within, it will take no less than a miracle to weather the storm. Author Rumer Godden spent three years living in close proximity to Stanbrook Abbey in Worcestershire communing with the Benedictine nuns in preparation for the writing of this beloved bestseller. The result is an honest and unforgettable novel of love, sacrifice, and devotion, a major literary achievement from the acclaimed author of Black Narcissus and The River. This ebook features an illustrated biography of the author including rare images from the Rumer Godden Literary Estate.
Download or read book The Hauntology of Everyday Life written by Sadeq Rahimi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume develops a comprehensive framework for applying the theory of hauntology to everyday life from ethnographic and clinical points of view. The central argument of the book is that all human experience is fundamentally haunted, and that a shift from ontological theory of subjective experience to a hauntological one is necessary and has urgent implications. Building on the notion of hauntology outlined by Derrida, the discussions are developed within the frameworks of psychoanalytic theory, specifically Jacques Lacan’s object relational theory of ego development and his structural reading of Freud’s theory of the psychic apparatus and its dynamics; along with the Hegelian ontology of the negative and its later modifications by 20th century philosophers such as Heidegger and Derrida; and the semiotics of difference introduced by Saussure and worked by Jakobson and others. This book argues and demonstrates the immediate relevance of hauntological analysis in everyday life by providing a microanalysis of the roles played by power, meaning and desire; and by using vignettes and data from ethnographic research and clinical settings, as well as references to literature, movies and other cultural products.

Download or read book Punk Productions written by Stacy Thompson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stacy Thompson's Punk Productions offers a concise history of punk music and combines concepts from Marxism to psychoanalysis to identify the shared desires that punk expresses through its material productions and social relations. Thompson explores all of the major punk scenes in detail, from the early days in New York and England, through California Hardcore and the Riot Grrrls, and thoroughly examines punk record collecting, the history of the Dischord and Lookout! record labels, and 'zines produced to chronicle the various scenes over the years. While most analyses of punk address it in terms of style, Thompson grounds its aesthetics, and particularly its most combative elements, in a materialist theory of punk economics situated within the broader fields of the music industry, the commodity form, and contemporary capitalism. While punk's ultimate goal of abolishing capitalism has not been met, the punk enterprise that stands opposed to the music industry is still flourishing. Punks continue to create aesthetics that cannot be readily commodified or rendered profitable by major record labels, and punks remain committed to transforming consumers into producers, in opposition to the global economy's increasingly rapid shift toward oligopoly and monopoly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the Essential Laws That Elevate You In one of his bluntest and most practical works ever, popular voice of esoteric ideas Mitch Horowitz explores the most powerful steps you can take to bring yourself into alignment with the natural forces of life to produce greater effectiveness, self-expression, creativity, earning ability, and personal happiness. In this book, Mitch makes his first detailed exploration of the most intriguing and mysterious idea charted by success master Napoleon Hill, Cosmic Habit Force, and demonstrates, step by step, how you can enact this method by incorporating 23 simple principles into your life. Cosmic Habit Force demonstrates how to “Harness Unexpected Forces” (Habit 5), “Loosen the Hold of Fear” (Habit 7), “Avoid Predatory Personalities” (Habit 20), “Expect Great Things” (Habit 22), and much more. As Mitch describes, certain ways of living bring you into alignment with laws that enable nature and all of life. This is not dissimilar to concepts found within Taoism and Transcendentalism. When you function within this productive flow, cycles of growth appear at your back. All of nature aids your advancement. “Brilliant mind.”—Duncan Trussell “Invitingly frank.”—Kirkus Reviews “Mitch Horowitz, a specialist in American esotericism…takes us far from naive doctrines.”—Paris Match
