Download or read book Mortal City written by Peter Lang and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heightened perception of urban violence increasingly dominates public discourse, but, as current events seem to demonstrate, these crises continue without immanent resolution. The very definitions of the city and of violence are constantly being reevaluated: the site of the city is shifting across real and imagined space; violence has been exposed outside the traditional areas of social conflict. Mortal City, published With StoreFront for Art and Architecture, is comprised of a series of essays investigating direct and indirect forms of violence and the city. Mortal City presents several different approaches to the subject. Articles by Donald Albrecht, Diane Ghirardo, Herbert Muschamp, Richard Plunz, and Lebbeus Woods, among others, are accompanied by photo essays by Warchitecture and Camilo Vergara and an interview with Mark Wigley. "We have gone from fearing the death of the city to fearing the city of death, and this traumatic change is reflected passionately in this book". -- A.D.

Book excerpt: Participation in art has become a prevalent and contested phenomenon since the 1990s. Artists have increasingly sought to create situations and events that invite spectators to become active participants, in dialogue both with their context and with each other. This reader charts a historical lineage and theoretical framework for this tendency, presented through the writings of artists, curators and philosophers from the late 1950s to the present--Publisher's description.

Download or read book The Meaning of Otherness in Education written by Muriel Briançon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of otherness, often misused, requires important conceptualization work in order for it to be considered in all of its forms, and not simply reduced to the account of others. Although otherness certainly questions the link to the other (relation), it also questions the link to the self (reflexivity) and the link to knowledge (epistemology). Being tridimensional, the process of otherness is a paradox, the meaning of which can only be drawn thanks to ethics, psychoanalytical orientation and the history of philosophical ideas. This book, which relates to philosophy of education, seeks to explain the problematic notion of otherness, the desire for which is specific to humankind. It examines how otherness questions the limits of knowledge, transmission and language, and argues that it is in fact a value, a tool and practice for all the actors involved in the relationship between education, knowledge and care.
