Whether dealing with the papacy and its place in the Church and the world, with the role of the people in government, or with the position of the individual in society, he would argue that this is the essential question. In their response, this elite drew on the Bible and custom, on Roman law and papal letters, in order that the law could encompass all human experience. To achieve this, these jurists needed to create categories and work out principles, hence the recourse to theology and the necessity for a logical structure, a ’systematization’. The historiography has so far ignored the question of popular sovereignty and emancipation; instead the Revolution has been vilified as a matrix of totalitarianisms by the liberals and as an ethnocentric phenomenon by postcolonial studies. This book examines why. More so than historians, it is philosophers that have played the leading role in the portrayal of this major event in French political history. The philosophical quarrels of the 1960s placed the French Revolution at the heart of their debates. The most well-documented among these is the conflict between Jean-Paul Sartre and Claude Lévi-Strauss and subsequently, Michel Foucault. Do we need an ethics of the history of the French Revolution? Rancière, Derrida, Balibar, Lefort, Robin, and Loraux can help answer this question, in an epistemological approach to history. These successive explorations allow us to move away from a myth of identity and to rediscover a real Revolution, capable of offering Enlightenment and political utility and interrogating what democracy and emancipation mean for us today.

Ann Rigney focusses on three celebrated nineteenth-century histories of the French Revolution, written by Alphonse de Lamartine, Jules Michelet and Louis Blanc. What distinguishes her account is the sensitivity and sophistication with which she handles the semiotic issues each text raises. She shows how a greater understanding of the specific features of historical narration can be achieved through a comparative analysis of the different representations of a common event. This fresh new perspective on a long-standing historiographical debate brings into relief the ways in which the narrative medium can be used to invest events with one significance rather than another.

Her father told many stories to Éva Nyáry about the romantic priest's carrier in her childhood. the several long meeting with him in the eighties meant her extraordinary impressions. the recorded conversations, the writings published about the noble thinking, sainted monk, matured the conception to share her impressions with readers. When she was handed over his diaries, texts, correspondence, photos and recorded memories, having his uncle's complete confidence, she has already felt as an obligation to work this fantastic treasury up. Ernest Nyáry's history of life who was born in an ancient Hungarian noble family in Turcansky Peter, today Slovakia in 1906, evolved in the priest's vocation, bridging world wars and continents--served as a lesson about faith, tolerance, decisions made in critical moments, and especially about humanity. Éva Nyáry's newest work follows her uncle's fantastic life relying on the documents at her disposal, many original quotations, and contemporary descriptions with historic fidelity. the unordinary story is completed by the archive photos of the legacy.
