Après un groupe de contributions introductives définissant des positions théoriques différentes, voire opposées, cet ouvrage développe la réflexion autour de quatre thèmes : 1) Commandes, productions et usages de la carte ; 2) Dénaturaliser les cartes : 1e pouvoir et l'autorité ; 3) Langage graphique et construction du savoir ; 4) Cartographier l'Autre. Il se poursuit par un groupe d'interrogations transversales sur les précurseurs du langage graphique de la cartographie statistique des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles ; sur la valeur rhétorique de 1a carte, les modalités collectives de construction de l'identité et de l'altérité et des politiques publiques territoriales ; à propos des politiques urbaines, sur la force de l'instrument graphique et en même temps sa difficulté, voire son incapacité, à dire la complexité du social. Trois contributions tirent enfin quelques leçons d'ensemble : la première établit une comparaison entre les traditions cartographiques anglo-saxonne et française ; la seconde, sans nier les inconvénients, voire les risques, de l'outil cartographique, insiste sur son apport aux processus de la cognition géographique ; la dernière, interrogeant les travaux de sciences politiques en priorité mais pas exclusivement, pose la question de la redondance de l'image par rapport au texte et surtout du risque d'une cartographie d'assignation, de " portrait du roi ".

Book excerpt: The Spectator is a major figure of the French Enlightenment whose far-reaching significance has not been fully grasped. As a basic organising principle of culture production in France of the early and mid-eighteenth century, the Spectator is an intermediary figure residing between the ancien régime and France of the Revolution. This transitional moment can be read in - and, furthermore, was prepared by - the emergence of several new literary genres in which, paradoxically, a Spectator was allotted the principle role. This study traces the process in which the king's disenfranchised subjects, at first limited merely to looking on at the spectacle of royal authority and privilege, began to evolve through versatile Spectator roles into citizen subjects. Each of four chapters reveals the significance of these figures to the development of a particular genre or disciplinary formation: Spectator journalism, art criticism, fiction of voyage and the exotic, and alternative popular theater (the théâtre de la joie). These genres designate the Spectator as constituing the narrative, thematic, textual focus that articulates contemporary life, foreign exotic cultures, art objects and knowledge itself. In the shift from a silent, near- invisible audience to a more active, more sharply delineated entity of Spectators - for whom, and in function of whom, not only literary and social production but the monarchy itself were increasingly obliged to perform - a vital and as yet untold story of early and mid-eighteenth-century culture is recounted.

The "global" and the "universal", in other words, are not the same. The idea of a world-society remains highly contested. Our times are marked by the fragmentation of a double relativistic character: the inevitable critique of Western universalism on the one hand, and resurgent identitarian and neo-nationalistic claims to identity on the other. Sources of an argumentation for a strong universalism brought forward by Western traditions such as Christianity, Marxism, and Liberalism have largely lost their legitimation. All the while, manifold and situated narratives of a common world that re-address the universal are under way of being produced and gain significance. This volume tracks the development and relevance of such cultural and social practices that posit forms of what we call minor universality. L'enseignement de ce guide reposait sur le MahaMudra (le Grand Symbole). Une des plus anciennes et des plus pures forme de méditation connues à ce jour. C'est après toutes ces années d'étude, de recherche, de réflexion et de méditation que Julien a écrit ce livre suite à son désir de partager avec les sincères chercheuses et chercheurs de vérité les résultats de ses efforts pour atteindre un niveau plus élevé de compréhension de la vie, de l'humanité et finalement de lui-même.
