Book The Road from Paris

Download or read book The Road from Paris written by Cyrena N. Pondrom and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1974-03-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'For the best part of a thousand years English poets have gone to school to the French,' declared Ezra Pound in 1913. Whatever the truth of this assertion for all of English literature its accuracy for Pound's own period is well established. Both he and T. S. Eliot wrote frankly of the debt which they owed to their French predecessors and this fact has long been recognised by students of English literature. With the recognition of this influence went the assumption that Eliot and Pound were themselves responsible for its transmission from France to England. That this was not so is demonstrated by the documents reprinted in this volume. Dr Pondrom presents a selection of extracts and complete essays and letters by the critics and poets who together were principally responsible for channelling into English writing the ideas and theories of the French poetic avant-garde.

Book Reappearing Characters in Nineteenth Century French Literature

Download or read book Reappearing Characters in Nineteenth Century French Literature written by Sotirios Paraschas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the phenomenon of the reappearance of characters in nineteenth-century French fiction. It approaches this from a hitherto unexplored perspective: that of the twin history of the aesthetic notion of originality and the legal notion of literary property. While the reappearance of characters in the works of canonical authors such as Honoré de Balzac and Émile Zola is usually seen as a device which transforms the individual works of an author into a coherent whole, this book argues that the unprecedented systematisation of the reappearance of characters in the nineteenth century has to be seen within a wider cultural, economic, and legal context. While fictional characters are seen as original creations by their authors, from a legal point of view they are considered to be ‘ideas’ which are not protected and can be appropriated by anyone. By co-examining the reappearance of characters in the work of canonical authors and their reappearances in unauthorised appropriations, such as stage adaptations and sequels, this book discusses a series of issues that have shaped our understanding of authorship, originality, and property.

Download or read book Ravel the Decadent written by Michael J. Puri and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The music of Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), beloved by musicians and audiences since its debut, has been a difficult topic for scholars. The traditional stylistic categories of impressionism, symbolism, and neoclassicism, while relevant, have offered too little purchase on this fascinating but enigmatic work. In Ravel the Decadent, author Michael Puri provides an innovative and productive solution by locating the aesthetic origins of this music in the French Decadence and demonstrating the extension of this influence across the length of his oeuvre. From an array of Decadent topics Puri selects three--memory, sublimation, and desire--and uses them to delineate the content of this music, pinpoint its overlap with contemporary cultural discourse, and link it to its biographical context, as well as to create new methods altogether for the analysis and interpretation of music. Ravel the Decadent opens by defining the main concepts, giving particular attention to memory and decadence. It then stakes out contrasting modes of memory in this music: a nostalgic mode that views the past as forever lost, and a more optimistic one that imagines its resurrection and reanimation. Acknowledging Ravel's lifelong identity as a dandy--a figure that embodies the Decadence and its aspiration toward the sublime--Puri identifies possible moments of musical self-portraiture before stepping back to theorize dandyism in European musical modernism at large. He then addresses the dialectic between desire and its sublimation in the pairing of two genres--the bacchanal and the idyl--and leverages the central trio of concepts to offer provocative readings of Ravel's two waltz sets, the Valses nobles et sentimentales and La valse. Puri concludes by invoking the same terms to identify a topic of "faun music" that promises to create new common ground between Ravel and Debussy. Rife with close readings that will satisfy the musicologist, Ravel the Decadent also suits a more general reader through its broadly humanistic key concepts, immersion in contemporary art and literature, and clarity of language.

Book Post Romantic Predicament

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of critical texts from Paul de Man's Harvard University years, published for the first timeThese essays, brought together from the Paul de Man papers at the University of California (Irvine), make a significant contribution to the cultural history of deconstruction and the present state of literary theory. From 1955 to 1961, Paul de Man was Junior Fellow at Harvard University where he wrote a doctoral thesis entitled 'The Post-Romantic Predicament: a study in the poetry of Mallarme and Yeats'. This dissertation is presented alongside his other texts from this period, including essays on Holderlin, Keats and Stefan George. This collection reflects familiar concerns for de Man: the figurative dimension of language, the borders between philosophy and literature, the ideological obfuscations of Romanticism, and the difficulties of the North American heritage of New Criticism.
