Download or read book Remote Sensing Modeling and Applications to Wildland Fires written by John J. Qu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists and managers alike need timely, cost-effective, and technically appropriate fire-related information to develop functional strategies for the diverse fire communities. "Remote Sensing Modeling and Applications to Wildland Fires" addresses wildland fire management needs by presenting discussions that link ecology and the physical sciences from local to regional levels, views on integrated decision support data for policy and decision makers, new technologies and techniques, and future challenges and how remote sensing might help to address them. While creating awareness of wildland fire management and rehabilitation issues, hands-on experience in applying remote sensing and simulation modeling is also shared. This book will be a useful reference work for researchers, practitioners and graduate students in the fields of fire science, remote sensing and modeling applications. Professor John J. Qu works at the Department of Geography and GeoInformation Science at George Mason University (GMU), USA. He is the Founder and Director of the Environmental Science and Technology Center (ESTC) and EastFIRE Lab at GMU.

Download or read book Managing Coarse Woody Debris in Fire adapted Southwestern Forests written by David Brewer and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire-adapted forested ecosystems in the Southwest evolved with a continual flux of downed woody materiala structural component that is considered essential to a properly functioning forest ecosystem. The creation and accumulation of downed woody material depends on forest type, tree species, stage of succession/decay, the amount of insect and disease activity, climate, fire return intervals, windthrow, and management activities. In general, more downed woody material accumulates in forests with long fire return intervals (subalpine, mixed conifer, pinyon-juniper woodlands) than in forests with short fire return intervals, such as ponderosa pine. While early foresters saw downed woody material as waste, a potential source of insect and disease problems or a wildfire hazard, todays foresters and researchers have identified the large-size component of downed woody material.
Download or read book User Guide for HCR Estimator 2 0 written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The HCR (Harvest Cost-Revenue) Estimator is engineering and financial analysis software used to evaluate stand-level financial thresholds for harvesting small diameter ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) in the Southwest United States. The Windows-based program helps contractors and planners to identify costs associated with tree selection, residual handling, transportation of raw materials, and equipment used. Costs are compared against total financial return for regionally based market opportunities to arrive at potential net profit. Information is used to identify per-acre cost thresholds, for contract appraisal, and for prioritizing project planning for wildfire fuel reduction treatments and forest restoration efforts.
