Book excerpt: Abstract: High school counselors have a significant role in guiding students during their college decision making process, yet they are typically not an intended audience of community college marketing efforts and little is known about their perceptions of community colleges or how those perceptions influence their guidance regarding pathways to higher education. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine high school counselors' perceptions of community colleges through the lens of Perception theory and to discover the factors that contribute to those perceptions and the role perceptions play on their advisement practices. This study contributes to the existing literature regarding perceptions of community colleges. Through case study research, 3 themes emerged: (1) personal experiences with community colleges, (2) the perceived quality of education and marketing materials, and (3) the perceptions of community college as a primary pathway to higher education. These themes were explored in terms of their influence on the perceptions held by high school counselors and the findings indicate that personal experiences and interactions with community colleges do help to create perceptions and that perceptions are ever-evolving based upon these experiences. Implications for policy and practice and recommendations for researching ways to create positive personal interactions with the community college are offered. Community college educators and high school counselors work toward a similar goal of providing opportunities to students through education. Creating a culture of positive personal interactions for students, potential students and influencers of the college choice process should be a deliberate and integrated part of marketing and outreach efforts by the college.

Book excerpt: The point of entry into higher education for approximately half of all students is America's community colleges. Community colleges provide access to higher education to students who are extremely diverse in their educational preparation and personal backgrounds. Student services administrators and counselors agree that today's students are more in need of counseling services than ever before. At the same time, counseling positions are being decreased or even eliminated in all sectors of education. Counselors are on the front lines of providing critical services to under prepared or high-risk students. If the current trend continues, many high-risk students may not receive the assistance they need to be successful in college. This qualitative, action research study was designed to investigate why community college counseling positions are being decreased or eliminated altogether. Presidents, student services administrators, and counselors from four Iowa community colleges were interviewed over a period of four months. The perceptions of research participants were gathered to gain a fuller understanding of the factors that have led to the decrease of counseling positions in Iowa and to determine what actions counselors and administrators can take to effectively resolve this problem. The research findings include participant perspectives regarding the current state of community college counseling and suggestions on how community college counselors can demonstrate their professional value on campus. The document also discusses how counselors and administrators can collaborate to utilize counselor skills and professional training to the fullest. Themes that emerged from the data include, but are not limited to, marketing counseling services, campus collaboration, and assessing and documenting the effectiveness of counseling services. Specific actions are suggested for counselors, as well as administrators, to move toward mutual understanding and support of the counseling function within the community college. Several recommendations for future research are also included in the document.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This mixed-methods dissertation examines the experiences of academic counselors in the California community college (CCC) system who have provided distance/online counseling. As online education increases and is seen as a way to provide access to higher education at a lower cost to institutions, the need for online support services such as counseling is also increasing. Essential to student academic success is the utilization of counselors, yet we know little of the effectiveness of online support services such as academic counseling. Additionally, the process of accessing online student support services can be more difficult as these supports were limited at many CCCs prior to COVID-19. Research participants completed a 6-week online college counseling course provided by the Online Counseling Network (OCN) that led to an online counseling certificate. This program is managed by California Virtual Campus - Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI) and funded by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO). Participants (n = 61) completed a Counselor Online Experience Survey and a subset (n = 20) participated in focus groups in an effort to answer the research questions posed in this study. Using the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA): The Global Community for Academic Advising, Academic Advising Core Competencies (AACC) Model as the conceptual framework, this study found that CCC academic counselors providing distance/online counseling had a positive experience with online counseling and found that the online counseling training was useful, and counselors felt confident in their abilities to provide effective online counseling services. Recommendations include offering blended services on a consistent basis at CCC institutions and the suggestion that the CCCCO and the statewide academic senate support the return of the CCC academic counselor statewide committee and support the creation of a counselor conference to share best practices.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this research was to explore community college counselors' perception of role strain in their positions. Role strain theory explains the difficulties individuals face as they determine which behavior expectations they fulfill in their relationships. It was determined that counselors have important role relationships with students, college administrators and their peers. Through qualitative analysis, this study provided knowledge about community college counselor's perceptions about expectations of their role on campus. The study discovered student and administrator expectations of counselors, and beliefs counselors held regarding their roles based on formal educational and on the job trainings. This research aimed to answer the following questions: (a) How do California community college counselors define their roles in serving their student population? (b) What are California community college counselor's perceptions of student, administrative and professional expectations of the counselor's role? (c) What are the role expectations community college counselors learned from their formal education and on the job training programs? and (d) How do community college counselors perceive any differences in role expectations to affect their ability to provide quality counseling services? To answer these questions, in-depth interviews were utilized to collect qualitative data from community college counselors. The findings resulted from qualitative data analysis of the interview transcripts from study participants. Using thematic coding and analysis the interview data was grouped by codes into recurring themes. This resulted in the identification of four critical themes: (a) counselor preparation; (b) counselor role expectations; (c) counselor experiences with students; and (d) Counselor perceptions of college administrators. The results showed to improve counseling practice, counselors must discover ways to effectively deal with student mental health, and teach students how to navigate the higher education system. Counselors must also learn new ways to meet administrative requests for data based on information they already collect from students. This research be further developed by collecting data from a larger more diverse group of counselors. The data can be enriched by analyzing what Master's programs intend to teach future counselors. Last, collecting data from students is always recommended as the goal is always to improve their success.

Book excerpt: Past research has shown slightly mixed results about the relationship between community college academic counseling and Latino student experiences. Latino student experiences with academic counseling have been shown to be positive within the context of a special program. However, researchers have not examined how academic counseling is related to course access for Latino students. Given limitations of past research, this dissertation sought to examine counselor and Latino student perceptions of academic counseling within the contexts of mathematics and English course placements. I studied two large and diverse community colleges in southern California utilizing an embedded multiple case study design. A total of 34 counselors and 28 Latino students were interviewed using snowball and purposive sampling techniques. Other data collected were: field observations, screenshots of college websites, course catalogs, and other relevant documents and artifacts. Relative Autonomy of the State and Social Identity Contingencies were invoked as guiding theoretical perspectives. The major finding was a relationship between academic counseling and course access for Latino students, and three themes described such relationship. The first theme was a relationship between counselor perceptions about the placement test and perceived accuracy of course placements. Counselors reported that course placements were mostly accurate and did not need cross checking. The second theme was that there was a relationship between counselor perceptions of resources and their perceived role in course placement counseling. Counselors reported that for some students course placements were not accurate, but counselors could not conduct cross checks because they did not have access to the necessary complex resources of authority and ability assessment. The third theme was a relationship between counselor perceptions of Latinos and perceived accuracy of remedial course placements for Latinos. While counselors reported that flaws in course placement accuracy were inevitable, Latino students' remedial course placements were an exception.

This case study of a community college in Southern California examined the experiences and motivations of both Latinx students in their major/career decision-making process and the community college counseling faculty who serve, educate and guide them on a daily basis. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 10 first-generation Latinx students, as well as 10 counseling faculty at the same community college. Three themes emerged from this study: (1) perceptions of the career decision-making process, (2) tenacity despite institutional challenges, and (3) first-generation faculty serving first-generation students. Students shared a variety of motivations in their decision-making, and the findings indicate that both students and the counseling faculty agree that counseling career exploration courses are impactful and should be required for all new students. However, several institutional barriers prevent this from being a reality. Recommendations include suggestions for funding, hiring, the creation of internship programs, and that college campuses establish first-generation ally training for faculty.
