Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses Nevada in the context of the history of soil investigations; soil-forming factors; general soil regions; soil geomorphology; taxonomic structure of the soils; taxonomic soil regions; soil-forming processes; benchmark, endemic, rare, and endangered soils; and use of soils. With an average mean annual precipitation of 175 mm (7 in), Nevada is the driest state in the USA. More than three-quarters (89%) of the state has been mapped and the first soil survey was completed in 1909. Nevada is divided into 10 major land-resource areas and features two large deserts (the Great Basin Desert and the Mojave Desert), and over 100 north–south trending enclosed basins separated by mountain ranges (Basin and Range Province), several of which have peaks exceeding 3,400 m. Further, the soils of Nevada represent seven of the 12 globally recognized orders, 29 suborders, 69 great groups, and over 1,800 soil series, and some of the classic research on the origin of duripans and petrocalcic horizons was conducted in the state. This book presents the first report on the soils of Nevada and provides the first soil map of Nevada utilizing soil.

Book Agricultural Nevada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Agricultural Nevada Classic Reprint written by C. A. Norcross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Nevada There are three factors which are essential to successful agriculture, in addition to the fourth which is the human factor of plowing, planting, and harvesting, namely climate, with respect to the mean and extreme range of temperature of the seasons; soil, with respect to the constituents required for plant life, and humidity, with respect to the moisture necessary to grow crops. The. Latter factor in the arid region must be supplied by irrigation. It was once thought that Nature could not be improved upon by any artificial means of supplementing a natural deficiency of humidity. But that belief has been overthrown by the comparative results of the fruitfulness of like soils: in the one instance dependent on the uncertainties of rainfall, and in the other on moisture within the control of the agriculturist, to be given his crops when needed and withheld when not. Farmers who have had experience under both conditions are substantially unanimous in their preference of irrigation over rainfall. It is contended that not only is there a greater certainty of harvest, but that, other conditions being equal, equivalent lands will grow larger cr0ps under skilful irrigation than with rainfall. We have stated that Nevada, contrary to prevailing opinion, holds the promise of a great agricultural future. On what ground is this outlook based? The answer is: On climate, soil and irrigation; the conservation of the surface and subsurface waters of the State to supplement the deficiency of climatic humidity. Download or read book The New Nevada What It Is and What It Is to Be written by A. J. Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Nevada, What It Is and What It Is to Be: The Era of Irrigation and the Day of Opportunity The American has vigor and adaptability; he knows a good thing when he sees it, and he is quick to act, and to-day Nevada is taking on new life. The wonderful mining developments unite in point of time with the digging of great canals and the taking up of irrigable tracts, and every branch of industry and achievement is feeling the pulse of new life. Soon great areas of wild land will be converted into diversified farms and orchards of fine fruit, and the plains and valleys of Nevada will be the homes of thousands of prosperous and enterprising farmers. Always the permanent growth of cities, of manufactures and of commerce rests back upon the land. When the country fillup with farmers and the homes of farmers; when fields and orchards begin to yield support for the population, then the prosperity of towns and cities is assured. But in Nevada the extension of the farming interests waited upon the coming of an irrigation age. It was useless to multiply small farms until water could be had to insure the growth of crops, and this in turn waited for government action. Convictions about the value of our arid lands had to grow; the wisdom of arti ficial irrigation had to make its way; the lessons of experience had to be conned; the anglo-saxon had to unlearn some prejudices against cloudless skies and scanty rainfall. We were accustomed to depend upon the bounty of the clouds; all of our systems of laws, our customs and our traditions were based upon an ample rainfall, and had to do with drainage rather than irrigation. We were not used to dry and elevated plateaus, but to the valleys, the prairies, and the rolling country of the Middle West, and the hills of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New England. The habits and customs of a people are not changed in a day or a decade. It takes time. And when little by little, through long years, the value of irrigation had made its way into our convictions, and the general government was ready to take up the problem of supplying water for the arid lands, a new era was at hand. Book Agricultural Nevada

Download or read book Agricultural Nevada written by C. A. Norcross and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Nevada A State where no special attention until recently has been paid to its agricultural resources; desolate and unpropitious when viewed from the car windows of the transcontinental trains which traverse little of its farming sections; and for fifty years given over to mining as its paramount industry, with stock-raising second and farming third in the industrial list; with a preconceived opinion in the minds of the public that, generally speaking, it is as hopeless of transformation into fields of husbandry as are the tablelands of central Asia, or the Desert of Sahara - Nevada is somewhat handicapped in its appeal to homeseekers in that conditions are not what they are understood to be and that this great inland empire has its own marvelous agricultural destiny. Progress of Agriculture and Irrigation. But we have been making progress the last few decades, and very much so in agriculture and irrigation. In keeping with this advance, economic pressure is constantly crowding the surplus population of the country into every opening and available field of opportunity. Necessity - that wise old mother of invention - has the comfortable faculty about the time we are apparently up against a stone wall to disclose that the wall is not an obstacle after all, but is capable of being turned to very excellent advantage.
