Book Understanding the Growth of African Financial Markets

Download or read book Understanding the Growth of African Financial Markets written by Charles Amo Yartey and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines empirically the determinants of financial market development in Africa with an emphasis on banking systems and stock markets. The results show that income level, creditor rights protection, financial repression, and political risk are the main determinants of banking sector development in Africa, and that stock market liquidity, domestic savings, banking sector development, and political risk are the main determinants of stock market development. We also find that liberalizing the capital account promotes financial market development only in countries with high incomes, well- developed institutions, or both. The powerful impacts of political risk on both banking sector and stock market development suggest that resolution of political risk may be important to the development of African financial markets.

Book Business Cycles and Structural Change in South Africa

Download or read book Business Cycles and Structural Change in South Africa written by Willem H. Boshoff and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the South African business cycle and its links to structural change in the economy. Against the backdrop of the democratic transition in 1994 and the global financial crisis, the authors study how business cycles in South Africa have changed and how cycles are related to key developments in the financial markets, international trade and business sentiment in the country. By focusing on peaks and troughs in economic activity – so-called ‘turning-point cycles’ – the book links up with the common approach of international policymakers to studying fluctuations in economic activity. The authors also introduce new approaches to measuring phases of the business cycle (to understand slow recoveries after the global crisis), provide comprehensive descriptions to complement quantitative analyses, and utilize new data sources that allow the measurement of economic activity over longer periods. As such, the book provides the first integrated overview of business cycles in an emerging market, providing academics and policymakers with a better understanding of the measurement challenges and drivers of the cycle.

Book excerpt: This Technical Note discusses recommendations made during the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) for South Africa in the areas of contingency planning, crisis management, and bank resolution. The proposed scope of the new resolution regime and of the South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) jurisdiction as the resolution authority remains unclear. It is suggested that authorities should consider focusing on all deposit-taking institutions and only those other financial institutions that are currently deemed systemic. Non-deposit-taking financial institutions that are not found to be systemic should be resolved by the Prudential Authority or the Market Conduct Authority, whichever is the lead regulator.
