Book excerpt: Mattering to others is important in society; therefore, knowing how individuals perceive their mattering is essential. The problem addressed in this study is the gap in research of experiences regarding mattering and marginality of high school African American males. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine how African American males perceived their experiences of mattering and marginality in high school to teachers and administrators. A qualitative phenomenological approach and design were used to conduct one-on-one, semi-structured interviews with eight upcoming 11th and 12th graders to gather their experiences. Schlossberg's Theory of Marginality and Mattering and Critical Race Theory were used as guiding frameworks for this study. Four themes and four subthemes emerged, highlighting the ways the participants felt they mattered and felt marginalized: 1) getting acknowledged, with the emergent subthemes of being acknowledged through verbal praise and acknowledged through actions; 2) being shown respect, with the emerging subthemes of teachers valuing needs/opinions and teachers understanding; 3) feeling targeted by/rudeness from teachers; and 4) having an optional presence. This study is essential to educators worldwide and future studies because it will help them understand how to create an environment where African American high school males can feel valued, dependable, and appreciated. Hopefully, the African American male student population will continue to be studied, and other populations will be able to share their experiences of mattering and marginality to inform educators how to make all students feel as though they matter in and out of the classroom.

Book excerpt: In Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: Promising Practices for African American Male Students, I take us on a journey into teachers’ perceptions of the impact of implementing culturally responsive pedagogical (CRP) practices on the student learning outcomes of African American male students. The book also helps to identify teachers’ perceptions of the CRP strategies needed in the elementary school setting to address the diverse needs of African American male students. I share the story of educators from a large, diverse elementary school in an urban school district, who have made it their mission to provide African American male students with culturally responsive learning environments where they can thrive. Throughout the book, I make it clear that the implementation of CRP practices has a direct impact on the student learning outcomes of African American male students. The book provides additional research into the existing literature on CRP practices. Through a case study approach, my work allows for additional insight into the potential impact of CRP practices on the student learning outcomes of African American male students in an urban elementary school setting. The book takes us on a journey of highs and lows, ups and downs, and failures and successes. Throughout the book, rich, detailed stories and descriptions are shared based on classroom observations, interviews, and student learning outcomes collected from three elementary school teachers from diverse backgrounds and various years of experience. Classroom observations were conducted using the Culturally Responsive Instruction Observation Protocol™ (CRIOP) instrument to assess the practices being implemented in the classroom. As I focused on the hard realities that face African American male students in today’s classrooms, I identified six emerging themes, including one overarching emerging theme, and three promising practices that surfaced during my research. The CRP practices implemented proved helpful toward increasing learning outcomes for African American male students, and, ultimately, closing the achievement gap. As an African American educator, I have been able to see how the lack of culturally responsive practices creates learning obstacles for African American male students. These learning obstacles continue to plague a group that has been historically marginalized in our society. The implementation of CRP practices provides educators with an avenue to remedy a social justice issue that has plagued our nation for years. The information shared in this book can be beneficial for all those invested in closing the achievement gap and increasing student learning outcomes through the use of culturally responsive practices, including pre-service and in-service teachers, administrators, caregivers, community advocates, educational researchers, and policy makers.

Book excerpt: Too often educators are unable or unwilling to see the potential Black males have as students, and often view these young men as inhuman or uneducable. More specifically, teachers often ignore or underestimate that Black males experience education in a manner unlike their peers due to the historical construction of what it means to be a Black male. Given that K-12 students and teachers spend a significant amount of time together the teaching that occurs in classrooms can have a significant impact on student success within schools. What is often missing, not offered, not valued, or in need of re-emphasizing within the field of educational research is the need for Black males to theorize teaching. It is important to understand the type of pedagogical strategies that these young men believe will enrich their classroom experiences, which serves as the impetus for this exploratory study that seeks to answer how do Black males theorize (think, explain, and develop a set of ideas) notions of teaching. To develop a collective understanding of Black male students' perceptions of effective teaching, a social constructivist qualitative research method was implemented. More specifically a series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve Black male students who attended three urban high schools in southern California. Each of the interviews conducted were audio-taped and transcribed and lasted approximately 60 to 70 minutes. Three research questions that guided the study were: What are Black male secondary students' perceptions of effective teaching? What are the strategies, approaches, and methods of teaching that Black male students describe that? What can teachers, researchers, and policymakers learn from Black male students' understanding of effective teaching to better serve this student group in the classroom? Key findings revealed that the participants can articulate their thoughts about teaching with specificity by providing definitions of teaching, strategies that enhance their learning, and distinguishing between the act (teaching) and the person (the teacher). Moreover, too often the participants questioned the willingness of teachers to want to give their best instruction, make positive connections, and form relationships that will benefit their classroom success.

Book excerpt: Rempson takes issue with those who lay the plight of African Americans on racism, not seeing it, today, as a major obstacle to black progress. Rather, he traces the origin back to what he terms the African American Garden of Eden. In it, W. E. B. Dubois outlasted Booker T. Washington and fathered a tradition which Rempson argues has produced a victim identity and an emphasis on the system rather than the self. Only black males offer a way out, he declares, because it is entirely “our black males who are keeping us down and curtailing our progress,” in contrast to black females, who “are doing OK.” They are plagued by what Rempson calls the African American Male School Adaptability Crisis (AMSAC). Their academic performance ranks at the bottom, alone, below black female students and below white, Asian, and Hispanic male students. In large urban areas, their high school dropout rate is 59 percent and, nationally, they lag behind in college attendance and graduation rates. The outcome, Rempson argues, is dysfunctionality and the existence of hedonistic norms which hinder family and community stability. But while black males are the problem, Rempson contends, it is nevertheless only they who can solve it because research and experience show that it takes males to bring up and change other males. Though intended for everyone, he therefore writes his book to his fellow advantaged black males and makes a passionate plea for them to step up and, with the help of black females and of the nation, take the lead. As their guide, he has formulated eight propositions. Arrived at through an examination of impressively extensive data from numerous sources and disciplines, they are a marked departure from the customary. Most strikingly, delicate matters, such as those which pertain to intelligence quotient (IQ) and culture, are openly confronted and dealt with. But, Rempson writes, “unless confronted, we will not solve our problems.” “Nor,” he continues, “can we solve them unless we cut the umbilical cord to white America. We have no right to expect it to be our savior; nor are we justified in perceiving it as our oppressor.” Forcefully and finely written, Rempson’s book is a singular and courageous contribution. Alone, his eight propositions make it a worthy read.

The need for teachers and school personnel who understand these unique issues is paramount. Teachers have a direct impact on students and positive relationships with them are among the best predictors of success. This exploratory study examined urban high school teachers' experiences of working with African American male students. Eleven participants, who were teaching or had previously taught in an inner city public high school and were identified as effective by their fellow faculty members, were interviewed about their experiences working with these students. The purpose of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the types of strategies used by teachers when establishing and maintaining positive relationships with African American male students. An interview questionnaire composed of open-ended questions was developed to explore the approaches these teachers utilized to effectively engage their students. A qualitative analysis of the participants' interviews was completed using grounded theory methodology (Corbin & Strauss, 2014). Results from the study revealed six important themes: (a) understanding urban communities, (b) creating an atmosphere of safety and trust in the classroom, (c) the influence of race and gender on relationships with African American male students, (d) the connection between race and discipline, (e) the need for a culturally sensitive and relevant curriculum, and (f) setting high expectations. Additional themes included: (a) preparation to teach in urban communities; (b) the ineffectiveness of colorblind approaches; and (c) the need for role models of color and father figures. The findings of this study have five important implications for teachers, mental health professionals, teacher education programs, and policymakers: (a) addressing teachers' reluctance and/or difficulty discussing race related issues, (b) developing interventions that can successfully reduce the racial discipline gap, (c) preparing teachers to work in urban districts, (d) implementing professional development for teachers that challenges the colorblind approach and provides strategies for working effectively with African American male students, and (e) creating policies and interventions to address poverty and its relationship to urban education.

Book excerpt: Discussions and research related to the salience of Black male student needs and development in relation to their general success and well?being is well?documented in many fields. Indeed, many studies have found that healthy masculine identity development is associated with a number of positive outcomes for males in general, including Black males. In school counseling literature, however, this discussion has been relatively absent—particularly regarding those students living in urban contexts. Indeed, research devoted to the study of Black males in the school counseling literature focuses almost exclusively on race and issues associated with its social construction with only cursory, if any, attention given to their masculine identity development as a function of living in urban communities and attending urban schools. Based on this lack of information, it is probably a safe assumption that intentional, systematic, culturally relevant efforts to assist Black males in developing healthy achievement and masculine identities based on their unique personal, social, academic experiences and future career goals are not being applied by school counselors concerned with meeting students’ needs. School counselors are in a unique position, nonetheless, to lend their considerable expertise—insights, training and skills—to improving life outcomes among Black males—a population who are consistently in positions of risk according to a number of quality of life indicators. Without knowledge and awareness of Black males’ masculine identity development in urban areas, coupled with the requisite skills to influence the myriad factors that enhance and impede healthy development in such environments, they are missing out on tremendous opportunities which other professions appear to understand and, quite frankly, seem to take more seriously. As such, this book proposes to accomplish two specific goals: 1. Highlight the plight of Black males with specific emphasis on the ecological components of their lives in relation to current school culture and trends. 2. Encourage school counselors to give more thought to Black male identity development that takes into consideration differential experiences in society as a whole, and schools in particular, as a function of the intersection of their race, as well as their gender. The first rationale for this book, then, is to highlight the plight of Black males with specific emphasis on the ecological components of their lives in relation to current school culture and trends (e.g., standards?based accountability practices) in urban environments. However, I recognize the role of school counselors has never been fully integrated into educational reform programs. As such, their positions are often unregulated and determined by people in positions of power who do not understand their training, job?specific standards and, thus, potential impact on the lives of Black male students. As a result, their vast potential to develop strong interventions designed to address the myriad racial and masculine factors that serve to enhance and impede Black males’ academic achievement is often unrealized. Therefore, the second reason for this special issue is to include the scholarship of professional school counselors and counselor educators with policy change in mind. Scholars will be invited to contribute manuscripts that explore race, masculinity and academic achievement in relation to the role of school counselors.
