Book Defense Mechanisms of Woody Plants Against Fungi

Download or read book Defense Mechanisms of Woody Plants Against Fungi written by Robert A. Blanchette and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past decade, it has been apparent to both of us that a reference text covering all aspects of tree defense mechanisms to fungi was missing, needed and long overdue. Such a book would provide a clear, comprehensive overview of how living roots, stems and leaves respond to fungal pathogens. The need for such a book became in creasingly clear to us from our conversations with each other, as well as from our interactions with students and colleagues who desired a sourcebook containing reviews of morphological, biochemical and physiological aspects of host-parasite interactions in trees. During a field trip sponsored by the Forest Pathology Committee of the Ameri can Phytopathological Society, on a bus from one site to another, we decided to take the responsibility to prepare a book of this type and began to plan its composition. To adequately address the topic of this book as we had envisioned it, we believed that well-illustrated chapters were needed in order to reflect the important advances made by the many investigators who have examined the anatomical and physiological changes that occur when trees are attacked by fungi. We are grateful to Dr. Tore Timell, the Wood Science editor for Springer-Verlag, for supporting our efforts and for providing an avenue to publish such a profusely il lustrated volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date overview of the various wood and tree fungi that damage trees, lumber, and timber. Special focus is given to identification, prevention, and remediation techniques, and the book bridges the gap between research and application. It covers the fundamentals of cytology and morphology. There is a more practical section describing damage by viruses and bacteria on trees. The habitats of wood fungi are described as well as tree care. Important tree pathogens and wood decay fungi are characterized for prevention and identification. The final section focuses on the positive effects of wood-inhabiting microorganisms.

Book Fungal Strategies of Wood Decay in Trees

Download or read book Fungal Strategies of Wood Decay in Trees written by Francis W.M.R. Schwarze and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood-destroying fungi play an important role in nature, because they are the only forms of life capable of reducing wood to its initial constituents. However, they can also be dangerous for people and property, as they can impair the stability and fracture-safety of trees. This book gives detailed information, based on new and original scientfic findings, on the examination and effects of the most important species of fungi associated with failure of infected urban trees. In addition, new ways are presented for predicting the advance of decay in the living tree. The subject is illustrated and made easily accessible by numerous colored photos of fungus fruit bodies, defect symptoms, and macroscopic and microscopic pictures of wood decay. A detailed introduction to the fundamentals of wood pathology provides a way into the subjects of applied mycology and tree care for readers without previous special knowledge. Francis W.M.R. Schwarze, National Diploma of Arboriculture at Merrist Wood College, UK (1991), Master of Science in Pure, Applied Plant and Fungal Taxonomy, University of Reading, UK (1992), doctorate at Freiburg University (1995), since 1996 assistant at the Institute for Forest Botany and Tree Physiology at Freiburg University, concentrating on research into wood-destroying fungi and host-fungus interactions. Julia Engels, Diploma Forester at Freiburg University (1995), doctorate on root fungi at Freiburg University (1998). Since 1998 active in tree care and mycology in Luxembourg. Claus Mattheck, born 1947, doctorate in theoretical physics (1973), qualified as lecturer on damage studies at Karlsruhe University (1985), and now teaches there as Professor. Since 1991 he has been an officially appointed and attested expert on tree mechanics and fracture behaviour. Has been awarded numerous prizes for research and publication. Head of the Biomechanics Department at the Karlsruhe Research Centre.

Book Defense Mechanisms of Woody Plants Against Fungi

Download or read book Defense Mechanisms of Woody Plants Against Fungi written by Robert A. Blanchette and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defense mechanisms against fungi in bark, xylem, roots, and foliage of woodyangiosperms and gymnosperms are addressed in this newest addition to the SPRINGER SERIES IN WOOD SCIENCE. The topic is approached from an anatomical and physiological perspective with emphasis on the relationships betweenplant structure and function and their role in defensive reactions and woundrepair. Contributions on the biochemistry of defensive reactions, in-depth treatises on specific diseases such as Dutch elm disease, Hypoxylon canker of aspen, and Fusiform rust of pines, as well as chapters on wound reactions in bark tissues, microenvironmental aspects of xylem decay, the role of mycorrhizzal fungi in defense, physiological responses of trees to fungal symbionts of insects, and the application of tissue culture and immunocytochemistry to the study of defense mechanisms in trees are included. One of the most significantfeatures of the book is the large complement of photographic plates which serves to bring together a plethora of histopathological data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal diseases have contributed to death and disability in humans, triggered global wildlife extinctions and population declines, devastated agricultural crops, and altered forest ecosystem dynamics. Despite the extensive influence of fungi on health and economic well-being, the threats posed by emerging fungal pathogens to life on Earth are often underappreciated and poorly understood. On December 14 and 15, 2010, the IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a public workshop to explore the scientific and policy dimensions associated with the causes and consequences of emerging fungal diseases.

Book Heat Disinfestation of Decay Fungi Found in Post mountain Pine Beetle Wood

Download or read book Heat Disinfestation of Decay Fungi Found in Post mountain Pine Beetle Wood written by Adnan Uzunovic and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research focuses on studying the heat tolerance of sap-rot and heart-rot fungi found in beetle-killed wood. Specifically, the authors evaluate the 56/30 schedule and other temperature/time combinations. They also investigate whether slow air-drying increased the heat tolerance of the fungi. The generated data are expected to fill an important science gap on the fungi found in beetle-affected trees."--Document.

Book Diseases of Woody Ornamentals and Trees in Nurseries

Download or read book Diseases of Woody Ornamentals and Trees in Nurseries written by Ronald Klair Jones and published by American Phytopathological Society. This book was released on 2001 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extension agents from around the country offer practical, informative articles addressing the diseases of crops grown in nurseries. Some introductory pieces address abiotic and biotic causes of disease and eleven general diseases such as Botrytis blight and Verticillium wilt. The diseases to which 64 shade trees, shrubs, ground covers, and subtropical ornamentals are susceptible are then discussed in detail, along with methods for the diseases' control. The remaining 17 articles address aspects of disease management, from an introduction to the management of infectious plant diseases in the nursery to tissue culture of woody plants and regulatory control issues. c.
