Book excerpt: "This thesis aims to further understand the interfacial interactions in polymer-ceramic composites, identify ways to improve the interphase, and create high performance composites. Here we report three different polymer-ceramic systems with a focus on improving the mechanics and thermal properties of the final composite. The first system focuses on improving the strength of hydrogel-based composites using magnetically aligned micro-scale ceramic reinforcements. Here we have shown that the alginate-hydroxyapatite interphase successfully transfers stress from the hydrogel to the micro-ceramic reinforcement introducing a new class of load bearing tissue scaffolds. In addition, the mechanical properties of the hydrogel are tailorable depending on the filler orientation by using magnetic manipulation techniques. Finally, we have shown that hydrogels with perpendicular alignment exhibit high ductility, suggesting an exciting new toughening mechanism for fiber reinforced composites. In the second system, a semi-crystalline polymer matrix is reinforced with ceramic alumina micro-platelets. The matrix-filler interface is directly improved by locally crystallizing the polymer matrix using nanofiller nucleating agents, creating a hierarchical stiffness gradient between the matrix and the polymer. In this work, we use a combination of polypropylene, alumina, and carbon nanotubes, however the fundamentals of this system can be applied to a variety of different material combinations. We have successfully shown that a novel method to tailor the interphase between alumina and polypropylene using nanoparticle adsorption and local polymer crystallization techniques can be used to create a hierarchical stiffness gradient. This chapter also shows that the crystal nucleation and growth mechanisms match that of polypropylene-CNT filled systems, even when the CNT is adsorbed to the flat alumina surface. Finally, the locally crystallized polymer will likely improve the thermal heat transfer by introducing higher density polymer region immediately surrounding the filler. In the third system, the thermal conductivity of thermoset composites reinforced with ceramic filler is discussed. Thermal conductivity of polymeric materials is inherently low, therefore introducing high thermal conductivity ceramic filler improves the overall thermal properties. Here we discuss the most important aspects to creating these composites, including filler alignment, geometry, and introducing thermal pathways by creating a percolated network with the ceramic filler. A novel method to drive percolation in single layer, hBN-epoxy composites via Marangoni induced assembly is shown. Thermal spreading test results show this method of aligning and percolating the hBN platelets significantly increases the thermal heat transfer through the interphase. Finally, this chapter shows an application-based example of how thermal heat spreaders can be used in place of traditional metal heat management solutions. This thesis first discusses the importance of tailoring interphases in discontinuous composite materials. Following a detailed discussion on composite materials, we then introduce each individual system, review the current state of our research and key results, and discuss proposed methods to further improve the interfacial interactions and show property improvements in the final composite system"--Author's abstract.

Results of recent research were presented in oral and poster sessions by leading researchers from several countries. This collection of papers represents the state of the art in our understand ing of the processing-structure-property interrelationships for these materials which possess unique and useful electrical, magnetic, optical, mechanical and thermal properties as a result of their multiphase nature. We are grateful for the financial support of the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scien tific Research, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for this conference.
