Book The Australian Idea of a University

Download or read book The Australian Idea of a University written by Glyn Davis and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities, like other industries, are challenged by disruptive market forces. Today there are nearly forty public universities in Australia. Some predict that by 2070 there may be only ten institutions left globally to deliver higher education. Relentless inventiveness and entrepreneurial agendas promise students a world of unbounded study options. In this powerful meditation on the need for institutional diversity, Glyn Davis argues that experimentation, innovation and resilience are the only way the public university will endure.

Book Universities in Transition

Download or read book Universities in Transition written by Heather Brook and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2014-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities are social universes in their own right. They are the site of multiple, complex and diverse social relations, identities, communities, knowledges and practices. At the heart of this book are people enrolling at university for the first time and entering into the broad variety of social relations and contexts entailed in their ‘coming to know’ at, of and through university. For some time now the terms ‘transition to university’ and ‘first-year experience’ have been at the centre of discussion and discourse at, and about, Australian universities. For those university administrators, researchers and teachers involved, this focus has been framed by a number of interlinked factors ranging from social justice concerns to the hard economic realities confronting the contemporary corporatising university. In the midst of changing global economic conditions affecting the international student market, as well as shifting domestic politics surrounding university funding, the equation of dollars with student numbers has remained a constant, and has kept universities’ attention on the current ‘three Rs’ of higher education — recruitment, retention, reward — and, in particular, on the critical phase of students’ entry into the tertiary institution environment. By recasting ‘the transition to university’ as simultaneously and necessarily entailing a transition of university — indeed universities — and of their many and varied constitutive relations, structures and practices, the contributors to this book seek to reconceptualise the ‘first-year experience’ in terms of multiple and dynamic processes of dialogue and exchange amongst all participants. They interrogate taken-for-granted understandings of what ‘the university’ is, and consider what universities might yet become.

Book Languages other than English in Australian Higher Education

Download or read book Languages other than English in Australian Higher Education written by Jennifer Joan Baldwin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book researches the study of languages other than English, and their place in the Australian tertiary sector. Languages are discussed in the context of the histories of Australian universities, and the series of reports and surveys about languages across the second half of the twentieth century. It demonstrates how changes in the ethnic mix of society are reflected in language offerings, and how policies on languages have changed as a result of societal influences. Also discussed is the extent to which influencing factors changed over time depending on social, cultural, political and economic contexts, and the extent to which governments prioritised the promotion and funding of languages because of their perceived contribution to the national interest. The book will give readers an understanding as to whether languages have mattered to Australia in a national and international sense and how Australia’s attention to languages has been reflected in its identity and its sense of place in the world.
