Book Under the Wires at Tally Ho

Download or read book Under the Wires at Tally Ho written by David Berguer and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today pollution-free transport is high on the political agenda yet it is sometimes forgotten that electric vehicles ran on the streets of London from the early 1900s until 1962. This book tells the story of that period and describes both the vehicles themselves and the effect they had on the development of the suburbs. Local historian David Berguer has endeavoured to paint a picture of what life was like in the capital during this golden age, travelling and working on the trams and trolleybuses, and includes material based on newspaper reports, council and official minutes and oral histories from those involved. With many previously unpublished photographs and detail on the vehicles and routes themselves, there is even a chapter on the colourful pirate buses which competed against trams in the 1920s. Full of local interest and insights into daily life on north London trams and trolleybuses, this celebration of the glory days of electric street traction in the suburbs of North London is bound to capture the imagination of both transport and local historians alike.

Book excerpt: From the lean days of Depression-era Texas to the thrill of being one of the few who flew Spitfires, from a death-defying crash landing in Occupied France to capture and torture by the Gestapo, imprisonment in the Great Escape camp, Stalag Luft III, and years spent becoming a serial escape artist, this is the wartime memoir of a true hero, a real-life "Cooler King." Recounted in a wonderfully honest and self-deprecating voice, William Ash's Under the Wire is a classic in the making--a riveting story of bravery by one of the last of his generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1918 Gerhard and Alma Jacobson and nine-month-old Doris sailed for China. The Chinese landscape, both geographic and spiritual, proved to be a harsh and foreboding one. The marks of the destructive claws of the Dragon dogged the missionaries- haunted houses, civil conflict, demonic attacks, Japanese threats- and death. Then it was 1941. "Pearl Harbor Attacked," the headlines blazed. In Shanghai, Gerhard Jacobson continued to broadcast the gospel one day: "Ah-llo, Ah-llo," a man's voice yelled suddenly into the receiver. "We cut station off air. We come get you. You stay home!" Gerhard ascended the stairs to the room, his thoughts running wild. Visions of Japanese torture chambers filled his mind. What did the future hold? And what about the Pearl, the Church in China? Try as he might, the Dragon has failed to destroy it.

Book U S Army Intelligence in Germany 1944 1949

Download or read book U S Army Intelligence in Germany 1944 1949 written by Thomas Boghardt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive archival research in six countries and intensive fieldwork, the book analyzes the history of the village of Nkholongue on the eastern (Mozambican) shores of Lake Malawi from the time of its formation in the 19th century to the present day. The study uses Nkholongue as a microhistorical lens to examine such diverse topics as the slave trade, the spread of Islam, colonization, subsistence production, counter-insurgency, decolonization, civil war, ecotourism, and matriliny. Thereby, the book attempts to reflect as much as possible on the generalizability and (global) comparability of local findings by framing analyses in historiographical discussions that aim to go beyond the regional or national level. Although the chapters of the book deal with very different topics, they are united by a common interest in the social history of rural Africa in the longue durée. Contrary to persistent clichés of rural inertia in Africa, the book as a whole underscores the profound changeability of social conditions and relations in Nkholongue over the years and highlights how people’s room for maneuver kept changing as a result of the Winds of History, the frequent and often violent ruptures brought to the village from outside.

Book Blood on the Risers

Download or read book Blood on the Risers written by Michael O'Shea and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This artfully crafted saga depicts in vivid detail, the arduous journey of a young, impressionable patriot yearning to fulfill his destiny in the turmoil of the 1960's. The author draws you close to him as he encounters stiff challenges to his basic values, his character, as well as his faith in his fellow man. You'll taste the bitter prop blast as you stand in the open door beside him, holding your breath while he soars through the icy sky to the mountainous drop zone below. Discover the true nature of this Nation's most valiant fighting men as he progressively learns what it takes to lead Green Berets into battle. Share the distinct smell of death while he clutches on to the remnants of his tattered soul, constantly violated while he processes the tragedy of life unfolding before him. Witness the sheer resolve he and his men display in their commitment to their country, despite the disrespect and utter contempt shown to them by their own countrymen. This factual rendering allows you to eavesdrop on the innermost workings of a Special Forces A-Team as they train and ultimately prepare for battle. You'll be sprinting with a SOG Recon Team as they desperately work to elude the hordes of NVA soldiers, feeling the impact of explosions and the crackling of rifle fire along the way. This read will provide you with a renewed appreciation of what men endure when they make the commitment to defend their country and their way of life; despite the intimate danger and life-long consequences that accompany that decision. With dialogue that keeps the pages turning, Michael O'Shea transports us directly back to the real American experience in Vietnam. It's been nearly fifty years since the US inserted troops into jungles and villages more than 8,000 miles away. Stories such as Blood on the Risers are important and necessary for today's readers and future generations; veterans like O'Shea are prized for sharing them. Chris Henning - Clarion Review
