There is not much else, but it is charming in summer! It was under the willow-tree in one of these gardens that Johanne and Knud spent a great deal of their time and theirs was a beautiful friendship. But everything would change when Johanne had to leave for Copenhagen with her father! Would they remain friends? Or even, as Knud hoped, could they become more than friends? Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children’s literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Thanks to Andersen's contribution to children's literature, his birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.

Book THE TREES

    Book Details:
  • Author : Conrad Richter
  • Publisher : Knopf
  • Release : 2013-10-02
  • ISBN : 0804150990
  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book THE TREES written by Conrad Richter and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “They moved along in the bobbing, springy gait of a family that followed the woods as some families follow the sea.” In that first sentence Conrad Richter sets the mood of this magnificent epic of the American wilderness. Toward the close of the eighteenth century the land west of the Alleghenies and north of the Ohio river was an unbroken sea of trees. Beneath them the forest trails were dark, silent, and lonely, brightened only by a few lost beams of sunlight. Here the Lucketts, a wild, woodsfaring family, lived their roaming life, pushing ever westward as the frontier advanced and as new settlements threatened their isolation. Richter has written, not a historical novel, of which there are so many, but a novel of authentic early American life, of which there are so few. It is the primitive story of Worth Luckett, the hunter, and of Jary, his woman; of Genny, Wyitt, Achsa, and Sulie, their woods-wild children; of the bound boy and the Solitary and Jake Tench; but principally of the oldest girl, Sayward Luckett, whos people as far back as she knew had always been hunters and gunsmiths to hunters, but who, through the quiet, growing, and yet tragic oppression of the trees, turns her back at last on her life as a hunter’s child and becomes a tiller of the soil. This novel of great lyrical beauty and high excitement tells the story of the transition of American pioneers from the ways of the wilderness to the ways of civilization. Here is the true American epic. Here is the raw adventure, swift and cruel in its episodes; but here too is the poetry of loneliness. Here is a portrait of frontier life as it really must have seemed to the pioneers. Here in short is a masterpiece by the man who gave us The Sea of Grass.

Download or read book The Spirits of the Trees Classic Reprint written by Delong Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirits of the Trees French Revolution; and its most beautiful sentence takes a tree for its central figure: The oak grows silently in the forest, a thousand years; only in the thousandth year, when the woodman arrives with his axe, is there heard an echoing through the solitudes; and the oak an n o u n c e s itself when, with far sounding crash, it falls. E charm of this sentence lies in the fact that it tells so much more than it says - that is, to the mind that thinks, to the imag imation that has wings. Its sudden melody blares out from the printed page like the music of an unseen band; it thrills and quivers through all the nerves of memory and, in the twinkling of an eye, serenades the deep hushes of every forest we have known; dashes our thoughts against the melancholy shores of silence, and makes us wonder at the wonder of an inani mate life that can endure a thou sand speechless years.
