Book Suddenly There Were Dragons

Download or read book Suddenly There Were Dragons written by Wanda Lee Stafford and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were refugees everywhere, from the race of man, from the Dwarven race, from the Elven race. Hawks eyes narrowed as his thoughts raced, he had seen so many burnt hamlets towns and cities, now even whole country's had fallen to these foes. Even though he now had more information about the enemy it did not seem to help, rather he thought just the opposite. Kaelin joined him, using hand signals the Elven prince conveyed certain messages to Hawk, the first thing he told him was that both of the men he had sent to the North and South had returned, at about the same time he had returned from the East. Hawk himself had taken the West. He shook himself silently, he moved grasping Kaelins arm and hand he flashed back that he was about to leave to rejoin the others at the assigned area, there to meet and compare on what they were seeing, this way all four directions will have been checked. Smoke drifting their way from the city, was making both of their eyes sting and burn both muffled their coughing as best they could. When he had arrived at this spot he had seen miles of prisoners in chains being marched to the South. Somehow he also understood that the other two men and the prince would all be reporting the same thing. Devastation burning and looting wherever the foe went, no one seemed able to fight these fell and evil things, again he wondered if the combined might of the Elven nation, the Dwarven nation and the remaining nations of men would be able to stop this unrelenting force, or would this truly be the end of the world as they knew it!

A page-turning, sword-fighting fantasy adventure for middle grade and up. Book 1: Rebels of Halklyen A dark sorcerer, a corrupt king and a hidden village of rebels. Assassins are not always the bad guys. In Abbarkon, it is best to keep your head down and your guard up. As long as he can remember, 14-year-old Flint has done exactly that. He ignores both the whispers of a monster named Martokallu and the rumours of a rebel group assassinating high-born dukes. Those stories mean little to him as he washes dishes and scrubs floors. On the one day that Flint breaks his own rule to defend a friend, his master ends up dead. Accident or not, Flint is sentenced to death. Hearing of his exploits, the Hawks rescue him from the executioner and whisk him away to the hidden village of Halklyen. Experts with their blades and bows, the rebels are the true defenders of the kingdom. They give Flint a sword and teach him how to use it. Before long, Flint learns that the dark sorcerer, Martokallu is real. When the Hawks are forced into the open, Flint is ready to join the fight. Will the Hawks be strong enough to win against an army of Martokallu's Followers? Book 2: The God Sword The dwarves guard a secret. The Hawks must prove they are worthy. The Kingdom of Abbarkon is safe. There is a new king and Martokallu is dead. Or is he? If he returns, the Hawks will need the God Sword. In search of the fabled weapon, Flint and Fleta join the Hawks on a trek through the Dwarven Kingdom of Tsaralvia. Along the way, they discover an unsettling truth: the Protectors of the God Sword do not want them there and they will do everything in their power to stop them. If the Hawks hope to save Abbarkon, they must prove they are worthy of the blade. Book 3: The White Wolf The Hawks thought the war was over. A mad sorcerer, a barbarian horde and the elven army think otherwise. Thousands of barbarian warriors from the frozen land of Nairt'kun arrive in Abbarkon's north while an elven army prepares to attack from the south. Among the northern raiders is Venadis, a young slave girl. Her masters fear her beast-shifting magic and force her to wear an iron collar. Intent on freedom, she slips away from the blood-thirsty horde and with her healing powers, she earns a place in the Hawks. When Flint, Fleta and the others head south on a mission to assassinate the elven emperor, she goes with them. The elves must be stopped. Will the Hawks get there in time to change the course of the war? Mother and son authors, Paula Baker and Aidan Davies team up to tell the action-packed adventures of the Hawks. Download or read book Neighborhood Hawks written by John Lane and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After reading J. A. Baker’s fifty-year-old British nature classic The Peregrine, John Lane found himself an ocean away, stalking resident red-shouldered hawks in his neighborhood in Spartanburg, South Carolina. What he observed was very different from what Baker deduced from a decade of chronicling the lives of those brooding migratory raptors. Baker imagined a species on the brink of extinction because of the use of agricultural chemicals on European farms. A half century later in America, Lane found the red-shouldered hawks to be a stable Anthropocene species adapted to life along the waterways of a suburban nation. Lane watched the hawks for a full year and along the way made a pledge to himself: Anytime he heard or saw the noisy, nonmigratory hawks in his neighborhood, he would drop whatever he was doing and follow them on foot, on bike, or in his truck. The almanac that results from this discipline considers many questions any practiced amateur naturalist would ask, such as where and when will the hawks nest, what do they eat, what are their greatest threats, and what exactly are they communicating through those constant multinoted cries? Lane’s year following the hawks also led him to try to answer what would become the most complex question of all: why his heart, like Baker’s, goes out so fully to wild things.

  • ISBN : 0429560761
  • Pages : 185 pages

Download or read book Howard Hawks written by Gregory Camp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for creating classic films including His Girl Friday, The Big Sleep, Bringing Up Baby, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Howard Hawks is one of the best-known Hollywood ‘auteurs’, but the important role that music plays in his films has been generally neglected by film critics and scholars. In this concise study, Gregory Camp demonstrates how Hawks' use of music and musical treatment of dialogue articulate the group communication that is central to his films. In five chapters, Camp explores how the notion of 'music' in Hawks' films can be expanded beyond the film score, and the techniques by which Hawks and his collaborators (including actors, screenwriters, composers, and editors) achieve this heightened musicality.

Book Women in the Films of John Ford

Download or read book Women in the Films of John Ford written by David Meuel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While John Ford (1894-1973) remains one of the most influential and revered directors in film history, he is also one of the most frequently misunderstood. One widespread assumption is that he was almost exclusively a man's director, dismissive of, or at best not well attuned to, the stories, perspectives and concerns of women. This book forthrightly challenges such an assumption, giving readers a richer understanding of the director's view of the world and of the women as well as the men who inhabit it. Taking a fresh look at dozens of Ford films, both familiar favorites and under-appreciated gems, it focuses on the complex and diverse female characters in them as well as the actresses who so ably portrayed them.
