Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Oxidation Systems, Volume I is a collection of papers presented at the 1989 Bangalore Symposium on Oxygen Systems. This symposium covers various research studies on the essential roles, and the dangers of dioxygen reactions in biology. This volume is organized into five parts encompassing 32 chapters, and starts with an overview of the biological oxidation mechanisms involving oxygen and reduced oxygen derivatives. Parts I and II deal with the catalytic role of cytochrome P-450 and oxidase and oxygenase containing a flavin or pteridine enzymes in several biological oxidation reactions. These parts examine the biochemical aspects, reaction kinetics, and reaction mechanisms of such reactions. Parts III and IV describe first the structure function and properties of copper-containing oxidases and oxygenases. These parts also discuss the role of nonheme iron-containing and other oxygenases in the indole metabolism. Part V focuses on the role of peroxidase enzymes in cell protection and metabolism. This book will prove useful to biologists, enzyme scientists, and researchers.

Book excerpt: With improved control of most environmental causes of disease, genetic illness has assumed a primary importance in the causation of handicap and mortality in all age groups. At present, effective therapy is available for relatively few genetic conditions and prenatal diagnosis is an important option for couples at high risk. The task of providing prenatal diagnosis for these couples requires a team approach between clinicians and scientists, and is complicated by the large number of diverse conditions and by the rapid developments in the field, both obstetric in relation to imaging and tissue sampling methods and genetic in relation to techniques for analysis. Against this background, the aim of the Symposium was to provide an overview of the current status of prenatal and perinatal diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism. The format consisted of the usual mixture of specific invited overviews and free communications in either oral or poster form. The invited overviews, as can be seen from this publication, covered a wide range, from accepted methods for neonatal diagnosis and screening to newer techniques for prenatal diagnosis and likely future developments with respect to gene therapy. Similarly, the oral com munications included reviews of experience with biochemical analysis of chorionic villus sampling from major centres, more specific examples of progress towards the basic defect in Batten's disease and Canavan's disease, and prospects for effective therapy in Menkes' disease and a lipid myopathy.

Download or read book Enzyme Handbook 10 written by Dietmar Schomburg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent progress on enzyme immobilisation, enzyme production, coenzyme re generation and enzyme engineering has opened up fascinating new fields for the potential application of enzymes in a large range of different areas. As more progress in research and application of enzymes has been made the lack of an up-to-date overview of enzyme molecular properties has become more appar ent. Therefore, we started the development of an enzyme data information sys tem as part of protein-design activities at GBF. The present book "Enzyme Hand book" represents the printed version of this data bank. In future a computer searchable version will be also available. The enzymes in this Handbook are arranged according to the Enzyme Com mission list of enzymes. Some 3000 "different" enzymes will be covered. Fre quently enzymes with very different properties are included under the same EC number. Although we intend to give a representative overview on the char acteristics and variability of each enzyme the Handbook is not a compendium. The reader will have to go to the primary literature for more detailed information. Naturally it is not possible to cover all the numerous literature references for each enzyme (for special enzymes up to 40000) if the data representation is to be concise as is intended.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pteridines in their multitude of forms fulfill many roles in nature ranging from pigments to cofactors for numerous redox and one-carbon transfer reactions. This extraordinary diversity of function is unified by the unique chemistry of the pteridine heterocycle. The International Symposium on the Chemistry and Biology of Pteridines and Folates is a forum for presenting recent and exciting advances in this expanding field. In of ideas results that has often stimulated bringing together various disciplines, a synergy fresh approaches to major problems. The Tenth International Symposium held at Orange Beach, Alabama, March 21-23, 1993, proved no exception by providing new insights into folate enzymology, tetrahydrobiopterin and molybdopterin biosynthesis and function, enzyme synthesis and regulation, along with novel synthetic strategies for producing compounds that will expedite further study. The many outstanding scientific contributions found in the following chapters, which represent the work presented at the Symposium, are a reflection of the significant advances made since the Ninth International Symposium held in Zurich in 1989. Since the 7th International Symposium in St. Andrews, Scotland, a tradition has evolved of honoring scientists who have made outstanding contributions to pteridine research with a Gowland Hopkins medal and lectureship. Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins initiated the first investigation of what later proved to be pteridines in his studies of the yellow and white colors of butterflies.
