Book Making Believe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Magdalene Redekop
  • Publisher : Univ. of Manitoba Press
  • Release : 2020-04-10
  • ISBN : 0887558585
  • Pages : 511 pages

Download or read book Making Believe written by Magdalene Redekop and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2020-04-10 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Believe responds to a remarkable flowering of art by Mennonites in Canada. After the publication of his first novel in 1962, Rudy Wiebe was the only identifiable Mennonite literary writer in the country. Beginning in the 1970s, the numbers grew rapidly and now include writers Patrick Friesen, Sandra Birdsell, Di Brandt, Sarah Klassen, Armin Wiebe, David Bergen, Miriam Toews, Carrie Snyder, Casey Plett, and many more. A similar renaissance is evident in the visual arts (including artists Gathie Falk, Wanda Koop, and Aganetha Dyck) and in music (including composers Randolph Peters, Carol Ann Weaver, and Stephanie Martin). Confronted with an embarrassment of riches that resist survey, Magdalene Redekop opts for the use of case studies to raise questions about Mennonites and art. Part criticism, part memoir, Making Believe argues that there is no such thing as Mennonite art. At the same time, her close engagement with individual works of art paradoxically leads Redekop to identify a Mennonite sensibility at play in the space where artists from many cultures interact. Constant questioning and commitment to community are part of the Mennonite dissenting tradition. Although these values come up against the legacy of radical Anabaptist hostility to art, Redekop argues that the Early Modern roots of a contemporary crisis of representation are shared by all artists. Making Believe posits a Spielraum or play space in which all artists are dissembling tricksters, but differences in how we play are inflected by where we come from. The close readings in this book insist on respect for difference at the same time as they invite readers to find common ground while making believe across cultures.

Book And the Angels Were Silent

Download or read book And the Angels Were Silent written by Max Lucado and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can tell a lot about a person by the way he dies. In the last week of his life, Jesus deliberately sets his face toward Jerusalem—and certain death. This is no ordinary week. Even the angels are silent as they ponder the final days of Jesus Christ. This is no ordinary walk. Jesus doesn't chatter. He doesn't pause. He is on his final journey. He walks determinedly to the holy city, angrily into the temple, wearily into Gethsemane, painfully up the Via Dolorosa. And powerfully out of the vacated tomb. Master storyteller and best-selling author Max Lucado invites you: "Let's follow Jesus on his final journey. For by observing his, we may learn how to make ours. And discover what matters to God."

Book Uncluttered Faith

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Uncluttered Faith written by John Scott and published by Brown Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented as a series of seven letters written to leading atheist Richard Dawkins, Uncluttered Faith successfully connects the dots from unbelief to faith without dodging the tough questions. John Scott, a former nonbeliever and a retired lawyer, began reading books on the God debate over fifty years ago while struggling with his own doubts. He found many arguments so saturated with philosophic jargon or scientific vernacular that they seemed incomprehensible. After years of searching and conducting his own "faith experiment," Scott finally found compelling, rational reasons to believe in God that are not difficult to understand. These reasons point to an accessible path that scientists and nonscientists alike can and have followed to an unshakable faith-an uncluttered faith. Scott's thoughtful, well-reasoned critique of Dawkins's case against God's existence penetrates the clamor surrounding the God debate and speaks with resounding rationale. Book jacket.

Download or read book The Intimate Other written by Anna S. King and published by Orient Blackswan. This book was released on 2005 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intimate Other explores the theme of the devotional element in Indic Religions not only in Hinduism in which bhakti has become the dominant form, but also in Budhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Islam. The essays by scholars of international repute, show the strength of this devotion to the divine as a living and powerful source of value, aesthetic imagination, creativity and well-being . They also analyse the sometimes divergent interests of scholar and devotee, problematising devotion and exposing its historical development as complex, contested and 'political'. Of particular interest are the chapters on the Jain and Buddhist traditions where the existence of devotion has often been doubted or denied. Contributors investigate widely raging topics: these include an analysis of bhakti within the Sanskrit epics; a text-historical approach to Valmiki; Kabir's authorship of the poems attributed to him; contemporary attitudes to devotion to the Ganga: devotion within a syncretistic Jain movement, in Theravada Budhism, subcontinental Sufi Islam, young Sikhs in Britain and in the shared musical and poetic traditions of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. The volume ends with a sensitive exploration of the devotional love that overpowers death within the Hindus, sikhs and Muslims. The volume ends with a sensitive exploration of the devotional love that overpowers death within the Hindu bhakti context. Together they demonstrate vividly just how passionate love for the intimate other penetrates and inspires so many aspects of the religious culture of South Asia.

Book The Integrated Self

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian Stock
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2017-01-24
  • ISBN : 0812248716
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book The Integrated Self written by Brian Stock and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well before his entry into the religious life in the spring of 386 C.E., Augustine had embarked on a lengthy comparison between teachings on the self in the philosophical traditions of Platonism and Neoplatonism and the treatment of the topic in the Psalms, the letters of St. Paul, and other books of the Bible. Brian Stock argues that Augustine, over the course of these reflections, gradually abandoned a dualistic view of the self, in which the mind and the body play different roles, and developed the notion of an integrated self, in which the mind and body function interdependently. Stock identifies two intellectual techniques through which Augustine effected this change in his thought. One, lectio divina, was an early Christian approach to reading that engaged both mind and body. The other was a method of self-examination that consisted of framing an interior Socratic dialogue between Reason and the individual self. Stock investigates practices of writing, reading, and thinking across a range of premodern texts to demonstrate how Augustine builds upon the rhetorical traditions of Cicero and the inner dialogue of Plutarch to create an introspective and autobiographical version of self-study that had little to no precedent. The Integrated Self situates these texts in a broad historical framework while being carefully attuned to what they can tell us about the intersections of mind, body, and medicine in contemporary thought and practice. It is a book in which Stock continues his project of reading Augustine, and one in which he moves forward in new and perhaps unexpected directions.

Book Reformed Sacramentality

Download or read book Reformed Sacramentality written by Graham Hughes and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reformed Sacramentality, the late Graham Hughes discusses the role of physicality in worship. He contends that to counter the Reformed tradition's vulnerability to a cultural colonization by secular modernity, Reformed theology needs to amplify its appreciation for God's omnipresence in creation with a re-appropriation of the condensed symbols of faith. Hughes's argument builds on a historical analysis of the Reformed tradition's rejection of material sacramentality and its ecclesial and cultural consequences. From a late modern vantage point, Hughes advocates for a rediscovery of material sacramentality both as a lever against modern solipsism and as an iconic reminder of God's radical otherness.
