Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteen-year-old Frank Friedmaier lives in a country under occupation. Most people struggle to get by; Frank takes it easy in his mother’s whorehouse, which caters to members of the occupying forces. But Frank is restless. He is a pimp, a thug, a petty thief, and, as Dirty Snow opens, he has just killed his first man. Through the unrelenting darkness and cold of an endless winter, Frank will pursue abjection until at last there is nowhere to go. Hans Koning has described Dirty Snow as “one of the very few novels to come out of German-occupied France that gets it exactly right.” In a study of the criminal mind that is comparable to Jim Thompson’s The Killer Inside Me, Simenon maps a no man’s land of the spirit in which human nature is driven to destruction—and redemption, perhaps, as well—by forces beyond its control.

Book excerpt: Dirty Money describes the origin of financial investigations of narcotics traffickers through four landmark prosecutions in Los Angeles. The House that Heroin Built tells of how a major heroin dealer's purchases of luxury items, including a San Marino mansion and several expensive cars, were used to prove he was the leader of a national organization and obtain a life without parole sentence. The Hunt for the Architect details how a small bank's reports of currency deposits helped identify and bring to justice an organization which derived more than $32,000,000 from heroin and cocaine. A Very, Very Honest Lawyer concerns the detection and investigation of a sophisticated money laundering service for narcotics traffickers run by a Beverly Hills attorney. The Grandma Mafia relates how a courageous banker helped uncover a multi-million dollar money laundering and cocaine trafficking operation run by middle-aged grandmothers. The recounting of these significant cases is told by former Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Perry, who supervised the investigations and represented the government at trial. Today, financial investigations are a major weapon in the federal government's continuing fight against narcotics. This important investigative technique originated in the cases described in this book.

Book Foul Deeds Suspicious Deaths in Around Halifax

Download or read book Foul Deeds Suspicious Deaths in Around Halifax written by Stephen Wade and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2004-02-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calderdale has gone down in the annals of crime in England as the birthplace of Christie of Rillington Place, and as the haunt of the Yorkshire Ripper. But there is much more in the criminal history of the Halifax area to interest the reader with a taste for true crime. As a town with a shifting population of labour for the new mills of the Industrial Revolution, Halifax in the nineteenth century was a focus for urban disorder and lawbreaking. This book tells some of the tales from this period of social history, and from earlier times, when feuds and brutal punishment for crime were the order of the day. Here are the accounts of murders within the family, but also sad suicides and tragic assaults, public riots and violent vendettas. Every northern town has its darkunderbelly beneath the visible civic progress and commercial achievements Halifax and the cluster of towns nearby have had plenty of this nasty side of history, and these pages recount some of the most heinous and vicious crimes recorded between the anarchy of the Middle Ages and the dark twentieth century. The author, a graduate of Leeds University, is a social historian with a special interest in the chronicles of law and crime in the north. He has been a lecturer at the University of Huddersfield and has edited a number of books on literature and history with a regional context. He is currently working on Unsolved Yorkshire Murders, also published by Wharncliffe Books. He is planning to teach a course on the writing of crime in local history at the University of Nottingham.

Book The Environment Goes to Market

Download or read book The Environment Goes to Market written by National Academy of Public Administration and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the practical aspects of using economic incentives to achieve environmental goals, this book analyzes the design and implementation of market based programs and identifies critical issues for creating successful programs in the future. The book examines the conditions in which market incentives are most useful and probes the important new roles of both government and the private sector. It highlights the administrative, institutional, organizational, and informational requirements for successful operation of the programs, and it especially stresses the importance of program evaluation. This analysis is based on case studies of four programs at different levels of government--local, state, federal, and overseas--that use different tools--credit trading, direct taxes, variable fee structures, and refunds: the air credit trading program in the Los Angeles metropolitan area; the national pollution charge system of Russia; the recycling initiative of King County, Washington; and the deposit refund system of Michigan. Book Building a Clean Machine

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Johnston
  • Publisher : World Bank Publications
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 36 pages

Download or read book Building a Clean Machine written by Michael Johnston and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Many societies have limited corruption through the broad-based mobilization of a diverse range of interests willing and able to defend themselves by making meaningful demands for accountability of, and limits on, official power, and for an end to illicit advantages enjoyed by others. Historically such a process has taken place gradually, as political development has proceeded and the base of participation broadens. But today's high-corruption societies cannot wait for several generations to see such developments take place. Johnston and Kpundeh argue that social action coalitions, linking public and private actors, are a way to mobilize these sorts of participation and advocacy. Such coalitions are neither a new idea nor a guarantee of successful reforms. In many instances they win out by default as an anti-corruption strategy. But they contend that if sustained by careful planning and a diverse set of incentives, they can reinforce political will and enhance the strength of civil society. Coalition-building efforts are underway in many societies. But too often they have focused only on anti-corruption tactics and pursuing their own growth, rather than looking at the coalition-building process in more general terms. In Part I, the authors employ Wilson's (1973) analysis of the incentives that motivate and reward participation in organizations. This approach helps them identify ways in which the anti-corruption goals can be augmented by other kinds of appeals, even when material incentives are scarce. The authors also identify four stages of the coalition-building process"formation, credibility, expansion, and transformation"in which differing combinations of incentives will be necessary to address the group's most important problems and opportunities. In Part II the authors examine two important coalition-building efforts in light of the discussions thus far"Ghana's Anti-Corruption Coalition, and the Bangalore Agenda Task Force in Bangalore, Karnataka State, India. In Part III the authors link those cases to a broader analysis, suggesting that while purposive incentives are common in the early phases of all coalitions, other varieties must be added to the mix. Wilson's scheme points to ways in which the imaginative use of incentives can aid the transition from one phase of coalition development to the next. The authors conclude with general strategic issues, suggesting ways in which their analysis can be applied to those questions given the important variations to be found among cases. This paper"a product of the Governance, Finance, and Regulation Division, World Bank Institute"is part of a larger effort in the institute to address governance and anti-corruption issues in developing countries.

Book excerpt: THE TRUE STORY OF LONDON'S MOST PROLIFIC ARMED ROBBERY GANG The average bank robbery takes around four minutes. The essential ingredients are ruthlessness, cunning and plenty of bottle. You'll also need a weapon, a disguise and a getaway car. If you have all those things, then you could go to work right now. The Bradish boys had all these things and, boy, did they go to work. The 'Dirty Dozen' were a ruthless federation of criminals who ran the armed robbery game in London for over a decade. When charismatic leader 'Gentleman' Jim Doyle was jailed, the innovative but violent Bradish brothers, Sean and Vincent, stepped up to take the throne. Hardened by a life in London's most lawless corners, they recruited a tight-knit crew to forge a reputation as the brutal kings of their underworld trade. Banks, security vans, post offices, travel agents - anywhere was fair game and nowhere was safe. With endless money at their disposal, the gang spent freely on cars, drugs and decadence. Life was good. But with the Met's tough-as-nails Flying Squad hot on their heels, a member of the inner circle cracked under the pressure and turned grass - and so began the thrilling chase-down of the Bradish boys and their illicit empire. The Dirty Dozen is the real story of the rise and fall of London's most feared crime syndicate.
