Book Uncle Lightfoot Flip That Switch

Download or read book Uncle Lightfoot Flip That Switch written by Mary F Coffman and published by . This book was released on 2020-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your child is afraid of the dark? Does your child cry, whine, crawl into your bed at night, or refuse to go to bed? If so, Uncle Lightfoot, Flip That Switch: Overcoming Fear of the Dark may be just the book to help turn nighttime fears and tears into nighttime fun! The artist has given the Third Edition a new look, with almost all of the more than 90 illustrations now in color! Previous versions of Uncle Lightfoot have been tested at four universities. Michael is afraid at night (e.g., darkness, monsters, noises, burglars, sleeping alone, nightmares). His friend, Jerome, calls him a "scaredy cat." Uncle Lightfoot, a modern-day Creek Indian, is a retired teacher who knows games that can help overcome fear. Michael's parents, his brother, Tim, a young blind neighbor, Elizabeth, and even the farm dog, Lady, are willing to help Michael play the games! During the process of overcoming his fear, Michael also learns to create shadow animals, track animals, ride a horse, calm a goat, and rescue the dog from a cereal box attack! The 88-page children's book contains short chapters (usually only three to five pages), more than 15 games or activities, and more than 90 playful, often humorous illustrations. Edition 3 represents a refinement of the earlier edition that received the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) 2013 Seal of Merit Award. It is a lively, beautifully illustrated, entertaining book to help children, ages 4 to 8, deal with nighttime fears through a fictional story woven around fun family games. A 14-page Parent Guidebook is included in the Appendix. Researchers in several studies have found clinically significant reduction in nighttime fears in children ages 4 to 8 who used earlier versions of the Uncle Lightfoot materials. Bedtime battles can exhaust fearful children AND their parents - and can interfere with a good night's sleep. Can overcoming nighttime fear be exciting and fun? Uncle Lightfoot, Flip That Switch makes a convincing case that it can be.

Book Narrative Comprehension

Download or read book Narrative Comprehension written by Catherine Emmott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the current explosion of interest in cognitive linguistics, there has so far been relatively little research by cognitive linguists on narrative comprehension. Catherine Emmott draws on insights from discourse analysis and artificial intelligence to present a detailed model of how readers build, maintain, and use mental representations of fictional contexts, and how they keep track of characters and contexts within a complex, changing fictional world. The study focuses on anaphoric pronouns in narratives, assessing the accumulated knowledge required for readers to interpret these key grammatical items. The work has implications for linguistic theory since it questions several long-held assumptions about anaphora, arguing for a 'levels of consciousness' model for the processing of referring expressions.

Book excerpt: Del Rio. Val Verde. By the river. The Green Valley. The great grand parents and their kin came. By horse . . . wagon . . . stage coach . . . foot back. They settled the village. Helped name it Del Rio. Assisted in forming Val Verde County. Grandparents told stories: of their coming to live in the wonderful country where Devils River, the Pecos, and the Rio Grande meet . . . of early times in the boundary area where the Chihuahuan Desert from the west meets hills of the Edwards Plateau to the north and merges with Tamaulipas brush land from the south and the east. Times change. Winter-time tale-tellings before the fireplace on grand-dad’s knee . . . warm-weather story-sharings on the back porch in grand-ma’s lap . . . wisps of Prince Albert pipe smoke . . .twinkings of twilight fire-flies . . . all eroded away by movies, television, and cell phones. But there are still stories to tell. Tales to pass on. Things we want children – grandchildren – those still to come – to remember – in times yet to be. This book is a gathering of happenings – remembrances of events – glimpses of parenting – thoughts of yesteryear. It tells of: Horses and windmills and tarantulas . . . a wrong-way bus trip . . . a hidden wedding ring . . . sycamore trees . . . a lost bath and football shack showers . . . lions and toads and tin soldiers . . . a picket fence . . . old telephones . . . poison pig weed . . . a crusty old red rooster . . . building boats and reviving old cars . . . holiday traditions . . . hunting experiences . . . sailing fiascos . . . and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No longer a schoolboy but now a youth embarking on a fresh start. He sensed the significant changes in the air as World War II had just ended. Nations, both victors and vanquished, were scrambling to adapt their economies for peace, sparking an atmosphere of serious excitement about the impending transformation. ‘I’m leaving school this Easter,’ he announced to the September Road boys before descending from the low stone wall and making his way home, bidding his ‘byes’. He was about to join the ranks of the unemployed. ‘Ship’s Engineer or an apprentice to it, perhaps?’ his father had suggested. However, the title ‘Marine Engineer’ was not part of his parents’ final job considerations for him. The subject soon became as obsolete as the proverbial dodo – his first disappointment. The challenge of finding a job as a young adult had begun, and his life progressed. He was eager to demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to work. Setting aside these challenges, he found solace in his reflective moods, comforted by the breathtaking glamour of Hollywood screen actress Rita Hayworth. Her latest film had introduced him to her new visage, now occupying his quieter moments with a vision that both calmed and thrilled him.

Book excerpt: "Dahl is too good a storyteller to become predictable." —The Daily Telegraph In Switch Bitch four tales of seduction and suspense are told by the grand master of the short story, Roald Dahl. Topping and tailing this collection are "The Visitor" and "Bitch," stories featuring Dahl's notorious hedonist Oswald Hendryks Cornelius (or plain old Uncle Oswald) whose exploits are frequently as extraordinary as they are scandalous. In the middle, meanwhile, are "The Great Switcheroo" and "The Last Act," two stories exploring a darker side of desire and pleasure. In the black comedies of Switch Bitch Roald Dahl brilliantly captures the ins and outs, highs and lows of sex. Roald Dahl, the brilliant and worldwide acclaimed author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and many more classics for children, also wrote scores of short stories for adults. These delightfully disturbing tales have often been filmed and were most recently the inspiration for the West End play Roald Dahl's Twisted Tales by Jeremy Dyson. Roald Dahl's stories continue to make readers shiver today.

It was never a fit for him, but he fought to survive in it as long as he could. He maneuvered through its courtyards and learned to live in it. When Micah's only options in life became to go to prison for a long time, or become the property of the state, he willingly submitted to a new life and direction. Still reeling from the sudden passing of his wife, Mr. Rudolph Pfeiffer, a seventy-seven-year-old fearless, no-nonsense leader hesitantly took in the teen. Micah was tough, but Mr. Pfeiffer was tougher. Micah was not afraid to stand up for himself nor speak his mind, but neither was Mr. Pfeiffer. When their toughness clashed, Mr. Pfeiffer never backed down, and his hardness prevailed over Micah every time. But when their roughness matched, it was the perfect element to build a solid bond between the two of them. Although Mr. Pfeiffer greatly missed and longed to be with his late wife of five decades, he focused on Micah. Despite the infuriating meddling from Micah's past, Mr. Pfeiffer never gave up on him. Despite threats to Micah's future, Mr. Pfeiffer was a shield for him. Micah moved away from K street, but it was Mr. Pfeiffer's guidance, patience, and lessons on unfairness, economic disadvantages, and broken relationships that taught Micah how to live beyond K Street. Beyond K Street: Journey to Redemption reveals the journey of Micah and the young man he became as a result of Mr. Pfeiffer.
