Download or read book Innovative Approach for the Development of Sustainable Settlements in East Africa written by Oscar Eugenio Bellini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with sustainable affordable housing in developing countries, providing the main results of the BECOMe research project of the Politecnico di Milano. Sustainable, affordable housing in developing countries is increasingly important for African and international stakeholders, with massive urbanization processes involving many countries consuming large territories and natural resources minus any strategy of sustainability and social equality and without consideration of the long-term effects on the environment and subsequent generations. While the issue of affordable housing requires approaches adapted to the many specific African contexts, the case of Somalia seems representative of a fragile context characterized by the uncertainty of the social, political, and economic situations and the lack of common shared legislative references and strategies. The book aims to provide knowledge and propose a methodological framework developed from this particular situation that can serve as a template. On the basis of this main objective, the book deals with approaches and problems related to the creation of sustainable housing ecosystems, activating and boosting local enterprises and stimulating foreign investors to revamp the national AEC sector and related manufacturing industries, models for modular settlements, and business models and assessment methodologies useful for evaluating a set of appropriate technological solutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 11 articles reprinted from a 1999 journal and a 1998 anthology, South African social scientists and those from elsewhere who have worked there provide an overview of the environmental justice movement in the country, which blossomed only after the battle against apartheid was won in the early 1990s. They trace its history and describe the key theoretical and practical issues it faces after a decade, what has changed and what remained the same, the most and least effective strategies, and future directions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the developing world has seen unprecendented urban growth and urban areas have had to deal with a number of complex problems as a result. While population growth is one of the factors contributing to the deprivation and decay characteristic of most urban areas in the developing world, there are other factors. Apart from demographic and economic factors, the political organization factor of centralization has concentrated decision-making and with it resources in the urban areas, leading to further rural-urban migration. Another factor is one of colonialism. The transfer of foreign social structures and technology, while offering alternatives, has dislocated and significantly altered indigenous patterns of development in the developing world. This book examines a region where this last factor is a major significance; Zambia's copperbelt. Here, the concentration of towns which were developed very rapidly in the 1930s made Zambia one of the most highly urbanized Sub-Saharan countries. By focusing on copperbelt towns, the book provides a critical analysis of the development of urban policy in Zambia. Aspects of conflict and cooperation between different interest groups and - where relevant - their economic relationships are explored and a structural conflict model of urban management is proposed. The book concludes that, with proper management, existing and emerging sectional interests in urban areas can help provide conditions which foster the formulation of equitable urban policy. Although focused on Zambia, the proposed structural conflict approach has potential for wider application.

Download or read book Associational Life in African Cities written by Arne Tostensen and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2001 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains 17 chapters with material from 13 African countries, from Egypt to Swaziland and from Senegal to Kenya. Most of the authors are young African academics. The focus of the volume is the multitude of voluntary associations that has emerged in African cities in recent years. In many cases, they are a response to mounting poverty, failing infrastructure and services, and more generally, weak or abdicating urban governments. Some associations are new, in other cases, existing organizations are taking on new tasks. Associations may be neighbourhood-based, others may be city-wide and based on professional groupings or a shared ideology or religion. Still others have an ethnic base. Some of these organizations are engaged in both day-to-day matters of urban management and more long-term urban development. Urban associations challenge the monopoly of local and central government institutions.

Download or read book Mobile Africa written by Rijk van Dijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology deals with the complexity, variety and experience of all the forms of mobility we witness today in Sub-Saharan Africa. Three sets of issues are being discussed. First, the concept of mobility itself is considered and how it is conceived of in distinction from sedentarity. Second, which forms of mobility can be distinguished, not only from the perspective of Western social sciences, but also from the perspective of people's own experiences, ideas, notions, etc? Social science in Africa has particularly focused on rural-urban migration, but it is clear that there are many other forms as well. Third, the concept of mobility concerns not only geographical space, but there are other 'spaces' to consider as well. In addition to 'forms of mobility' there is a 'mobility of forms' in which the perception of those other spaces plays a crucial role. In short, the book intends to turn the whole notion of mobility as a supposedly rupturing phenomenon on its head, emphasizing that rather through travelling connections are established and continuity is experienced. We are challenged to delve into the traveller's mind, to think and follow their multi-spatial livelihoods and to explore what it means to people if they move in a variety of spaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its 14th year, the NILOS Documentary Yearbook provides the reader with an excellent collection of documents related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea, issued each year by organizations, organs and bodies of the United Nations system. Documents of the UN General Assembly, Meeting of State Parties to the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention, CLCS, ISBA, ITLOS, Follow-Up to the UN Straddling Fish Stocks and Small Island States Conferences, Panama Canal, ECOSOC, UNEP and UNCTAD are included first, followed by the documents of FAO, IAEA, IMO, UNESCO/IOC. As in the previous volumes, documents which were issued in the course of 1998 are reproduced, while other relevant documents are listed. The NILOS Documentary Yearbook has proved to be of invaluable assistance in facilitating access by the community of scholars and practitioners in ocean affairs and the law of the sea to essential documentation. The entry of the 1992 UN Law of the Sea Convention into force on 16th November 1994 and of the Part XI Agreement on 28 July, 1996, and progress in the implementation of Chapter 17 of Agenda 21, make continuation of this assistance of particular significance in the years to come. Volume 14 contains Special Report by Editor-in-Chief Barbara Kwiatkowska on The Law-of-the-Sea-Related Cases in the International Court of Justice During the Presidency of Judge Stephen M. Schwebel (1997-2000). It explores the unique role of the ICJ as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations in the development of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, in the context of an ongoing follow-up to the Overall Review and Appraisal of the UNCED Agenda 21. The members of the Yearbook's Advisory Board are: Judges Abdul Koroma and Shigeru Oda of the ICJ, Judges Thomas Mensah, Dolliver Nelson and Tullio Treves of the ITLOS, as well as Rosalie Balkin, Edward Brown, Lee Kimball, Bernard Oxman and Shabtai Rosenne.
