Book History and Narration

Download or read book History and Narration written by Marialuisa Bignami and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relation between narration and history from the perspective of the twentieth century – the century of criticisms – suggests a new outlook fit for the new millennium. We can no longer look at history and historiography naively, but must be aware of the rhetorical strategies that are at work in the writing. A research group based in Milan has been working on this topic for a few years, discussing authors and texts from different genres and epochs. The essays presented here deal with texts chosen because of their intrinsic relevance to the history of English-speaking cultures and recent critical perspectives – largely, but not exclusively, indebted to Hayden White. Thus the volume considers instances of narrativity and historical discourse in authors as diverse as S. Johnson, E. Chambers, C. Hill, J. Raban, V. Woolf, N. Mitchison, V. S. Naipaul, S. Rushdie, J. M. Coetzee, A. Ghosh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most powerful thing in the world is the symbol. Through symbols we create stories and myths that bring people to action. Where did the original symbols regarding an afterlife come from? How are myths built and why are they so powerful? The spiritual world is a fascinating place even more so today in that it is in direct competition with the metaphysics of science, especially physics, with numerous theories surrounding the origin of the universe and life. We read the universe came from nothing, we hear of singularities, multiverses, worm holes, string theory, metaphysics at its best. What we think of as the spiritual world may be more than something that springs from our imaginings, of a world beyond that can be glimpsed and perhaps manipulated if we perform the rituals correctly. As the reader will appreciate the spiritual world and quantum physics have a lot in common. Join Dr. Rush as he takes you through the world of imagination, of magic, shamanism, and worlds beyond.

Download or read book TechGnosis written by Erik Davis and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TechGnosis is a cult classic of media studies that straddles the line between academic discourse and popular culture; it appeals to both those secular and spiritual, to fans of cyberpunk and hacker literature and culture as much as new-thought adherents and spiritual seekers How does our fascination with technology intersect with the religious imagination? In TechGnosis—a cult classic now updated and reissued with a new afterword—Erik Davis argues that while the realms of the digital and the spiritual may seem worlds apart, esoteric and religious impulses have in fact always permeated (and sometimes inspired) technological communication. Davis uncovers startling connections between such seemingly disparate topics as electricity and alchemy; online roleplaying games and religious and occult practices; virtual reality and gnostic mythology; programming languages and Kabbalah. The final chapters address the apocalyptic dreams that haunt technology, providing vital historical context as well as new ways to think about a future defined by the mutant intermingling of mind and machine, nightmare and fantasy.

Book Collective Agency and Cooperation in Natural and Artificial Systems

Download or read book Collective Agency and Cooperation in Natural and Artificial Systems written by Catrin Misselhorn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together philosophical approaches to cooperation and collective agency with research into human-machine interaction and cooperation from engineering, robotics, computer science and AI. Bringing these so far largely unrelated fields of study together leads to a better understanding of collective agency in natural and artificial systems and will help to improve the design and performance of hybrid systems involving human and artificial agents. Modeling collective agency with the help of computer simulations promises also philosophical insights into the emergence of collective agency. The volume consists of four sections. The first section is dedicated to the concept of agency. The second section of the book turns to human-machine cooperation. The focus of the third section is the transition from cooperation to collective agency. The last section concerns the explanatory value of social simulations of collective agency in the broader framework of cultural evolution.

Book Mythology of the Soul Psychology Revivals

Download or read book Mythology of the Soul Psychology Revivals written by H.G. Baynes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 1005 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1940, this classic study of two schizophrenic case-histories further opened up the seemingly intractable problem of this condition; a task preceded by Jung’s own Psychology of Dementia Praecox. It was Baynes’s grasp of the meaning of the symbol coupled with his wide scholarship that enable him to explore the case-histories in such remarkable and fruitful depth, thus linking pathological psychology through graphic expression and the dream of the myths of mankind and the universal man. This was truly a scientific task. In case 1, the series of dreams, fantasies and active imagination, fully illustrated by the patients’ spontaneous paintings, suggested to him a kind of mythological imagery. Baynes then demonstrates the emergence and development of a hero myth together with its therapeutic effect upon the patient, as an inner personal experience of death and rebirth. Baynes also applied the methods of synthesis to the understanding of modern art and its reflection of the spirit of the times – a realization of the basic split in the socio-religious structure of European Culture. In case 2, the subject was an artist, and out of his own split he seemed to have created a symbolic bridge that would be a therapeutic bridge for himself and a possible model for curing the evil of the times in which we then were living.
