Que les mouvements sociaux ne se limitent pas à la grève est une évidence, mais il a semblé utile de mettre en perspective historique les modalités d'action observées depuis une dizaine d'années. Le secteur de l'énergie, et en particulier l'électricité, a connu des mutations institutionnelles et économiques considérables en un laps de temps assez court. Le fort taux de syndicalisation du secteur, le caractère emblématique des conflits du passé, la montée en puissance de l'opinion publique ont contribué à remodeler les actions revendicatives (coupure de courant ou, au contraire, son rétablissement). Apparu flans les années 1960, le concept de " nouveau mouvement social " (NMS) a pu être remis au goût du jour dans les années 2000. Pourtant, son emploi ne saurait être une évidence et les différents articles de ce dossier visent à cerner les limites d'analyses, parfois trop hâtives, en inscrivant ces mouvements dans la durée. Deux articles complètent cette publication en présentant desrecherches récentes. Le premier propose une analyse détaillée des investissements suisses dans l'hydroélectricité. Conscients du risque de dépendance énergétique dès le milieu du XIXe siècle, ingénieurs et techniciens surent faire fructifier les savoir-faire. Le second article présente les résultats d'une thèse récente sur l'histoire de l'idée du réseau électrique européen, combinaison de dynamiques techniques, entrepreneuriales, politiques et culturelles.

Hughes. Cet ouvrage, rapidement devenu une référence incontournable, constitue une étape essentielle dans l'historiographie consacrée à l'histoire de l'électricité. Une quinzaine de spécialistes des États-Unis et d'Europe ont fait le lien entre leurs recherches et les théories de Hughes. Le choix des thèmes respectait les sujets abordés dans Networks of Power, tout en donnant entière liberté aux participants sur la façon de les traiter. Les concepts utilisés par le chercheur américain ont beaucoup retenu l'attention, et notamment ceux de " système ", de " momentum technologique " et de " reverse salient ". En même temps, afin de ne pas limiter l'analyse de l'industrie électrique à ses seuls aspects techniques, plusieurs auteurs l'ont abordée sous l'angle des réseaux humains, managériaux ou financiers. Certains ont réexaminé les thèses de Hughes à partir des notions bien actuelles de régulation et de dérégulation. Enfin, les mêmes thèses ont été analysées à la lumière des liens complexes qu'entretiennent l'électricité et la culture. La publication des articles issus de ce colloque est non seulement un hommage rendu au grand historien américain Thomas P. Hughes, mais aussi l'occasion de proposer un aperçu de la fécondité des travaux menés en Europe et aux États-Unis autour de la notion de " réseaux ". Les Annales historiques de l'électricité, publiées avec le soutien de la Fondation Électricité de France, se proposent de faire connaître à un large public l'actualité de la recherche, nationale et internationale, dans le domaine de l'histoire de l'énergie électrique.

For many, these four words instantly conjure late nineteenth-century Paris and the garish colors of Toulouse-Lautrec’s iconic posters. More recently, the Eiffel Tower’s nightly show of sparkling electric lights has come to exemplify our fantasies of Parisian nightlife. Though we reflect longingly on such scenes, in Illuminated Paris, Hollis Clayson shows that there’s more to these clichés than meets the eye. In this richly illustrated book, she traces the dramatic evolution of lighting in Paris and how artists responded to the shifting visual and cultural scenes that resulted from these technologies. While older gas lighting produced a haze of orange, new electric lighting was hardly an improvement: the glare of experimental arc lights—themselves dangerous—left figures looking pale and ghoulish. As Clayson shows, artists’ representations of these new colors and shapes reveal turn-of-the-century concerns about modernization as electric lighting came to represent the harsh glare of rapidly accelerating social change. At the same time, in part thanks to American artists visiting the city, these works of art also produced our enduring romantic view of Parisian glamour and its Belle Époque.

But Jessica Riskin finds that in the French Enlightenment, empiricism was intimately bound up with sensibility. In what she calls a "sentimental empiricism," natural knowledge was taken to rest on a blend of experience and emotion. Riskin argues that sentimental empiricism brought together ideas and institutions, practices and politics. She shows, for instance, how the study of blindness, led by ideas about the mental and moral role of vision and by cataract surgeries, shaped the first school for the blind; how Benjamin Franklin's electrical physics, ascribing desires to nature, engaged French economic reformers; and how the question of the role of language in science and social life linked disputes over Antoine Lavoisier's new chemical names to the founding of France's modern system of civic education. Recasting the Age of Reason by stressing its conjunction with the Age of Sensibility, Riskin offers an entirely new perspective on the development of modern science and the history of the Enlightenment.
