Étaient également sujets de recherche philosophique et spirituelle, en Inde, dans le nord du Népal particulièrement. À ses débuts il fréquentait les ashrams de l'Inde et les lamaseries du nord du Népal où il reçut certaines initiations philosophiques bouddhistes. Il recherchait intensément une méthode simple, la méthode de méditation la plus pure et la moins altérées par le temps et les gens. Pour cela il a dû effectuer des recherches qui l'ont amené à remonter dans le temps et finalement, lors d'un voyage dans le nord du Népal, il rencontra un moine ermite, maître de l'école Kagyûtpa (une adepte de la succession apostolique). L'enseignement de ce guide reposait sur le MahaMudra (le Grand Symbole). Une des plus anciennes et des plus pures forme de méditation connues à ce jour. C'est après toutes ces années d'étude, de recherche, de réflexion et de méditation que Julien a écrit ce livre suite à son désir de partager avec les sincères chercheuses et chercheurs de vérité les résultats de ses efforts pour atteindre un niveau plus élevé de compréhension de la vie, de l'humanité et finalement de lui-même.

Book excerpt: Investment in secondary schooling in Sub-Saharan Africa has been neglected since the World Conference on Education for All at Jomtien. The World Education Forum at Dakar began to recognize the growing importance of post-primary schooling for development. Only 25 percent of school-age children attend secondary school in the region--and fewer complete successfully, having consequences for gender equity, poverty reduction, and economic growth. As universal primary schooling becomes a reality, demand for secondary schools is increasing rapidly. Gaps between the educational levels of the labor force in Sub-Saharan Africa and other regions remain large. Girls are more often excluded from secondary schools than boys. Secondary schooling costs are high to both governments and households. This study explores how access to secondary education can be increased. Radical reforms are needed in low-enrollment countries to make secondary schooling more affordable and to provide more access to the majority currently excluded. The report identifies the rationale for increasing access, reviews the status of secondary education in Sub-Saharan Africa, charts the growth needed in different countries to reach different levels of participation, identifies the financial constraints on growth, and discusses the reforms needed to make access affordable. It concludes with a road map of ways to increase the probability that more of Africa's children will experience secondary schooling.

Classrooms have been repaired and new ones built; teachers who fled the mayhem have been reintegrated into the teaching force; arrears in teacher pay have been cleared up; a Genocide Fund has been created specifically to assist orphans; and, in higher education, the system has been diversified and new arrangements for student finance have been introduced. This success notwithstanding, the task of transforming the rapid recovery into sustained progress over time has only just begun.A priority will be to ensure that all Rwandan children can complete a full course of primary schooling of reasonable quality; and that expansion at the post-primary levels occurs at a pace commensurate with the labor market's capacity to absorb highly educated job seekers. Achieving this will present tough tradeoffs in financing and service delivery, including combining increased funding for primary education with greater reliance on private financing at other levels; sharper targeting of public subsidies for education; and tighter management of classroom processes to improve student flow and student learning throughout the system.'Education in Rwanda' explores the challenges of sustaining educational progress in a fiscally viable fashion as the country makes the transition from post-conflict recovery to long-term development.

We also asked our authors to pose questions raised by this educational revolution. The ‘state’ itself in this context is a heterogeneous mix of elite people - bureaucrats, politicians, committees of co-opted academics and business leader - and it increasingly faces pressures from diverse stakeholders, including students (themselves an increasingly diverse community), staff, families, employers and businesses (local, regional and multinational). This volume explores the rapidly evolving relationship between the state and higher education in Europe and in East Asia through a combination of empirical studies, secondary analyses and personal observations from many of the leading scholars in the field of comparative education studies. A scenario emerges where the state seeks to encourage stakeholder influence, while, at the same time, acts to moderate such influence in order to ensure that wider objectives are satisfied; markets are controlled, elements of demand and supply are manipulated and funding is targeted to meet particular policy priorities through a model that is described as ‘controlled stakeholder steering’ which offers a new explanation of the relationship between the state and higher education, certainly in the countries addressed in this book.

Book excerpt: This book argues for the importance of literature studies using the historical debate between the disinterested disciplines (“art for art’s sake”) and utilitarian or productive disciplines. Forgoing the traditional argument that literature is a unique spiritual resource, as well as the utilitarian thought that literary pedagogy promotes skills that are relevant to a post-industrial economy, Guiney suggests that literary pedagogy must enable mutual access between the classroom and the outside world. It must recognize the need for every human being to become a conscious producer of culture rather than a consumer, through an active process of literary reading and writing. Using the history of French curricular reforms as a case study for his analysis, Guiney provides a contextualized redefinition of literature’s social value.

The seminar, entitled "The Costs of Post-Secondary Education in a Technological Society," was held at Cap-Rouge, near Quebec City, 25-27 June 1971. The seminar reviewed the response of developed nations to the important and difficult challenges confronting post-secondary education in this technological age. It brought together heads of post-secondary institutions and educational advisory bodies, financial and educational government officials, educational researchers, and businessmen. Approximately fifty per cent of the participants were from Canada with the remainder from Australia, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Norway, United States, West Germany, and from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. La présente publication comprend les exposés présentés lors du colloque canadien Nuffield ainsi qu'un résumé des discussions. Le colloque intitulé "Le cout de l'enseignement post-secondaire dans une société technologique" s'est tenu à Cap-Rouge, près de Québec, les 25, 26, et 27 juin, 1971.
