Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulysses and Columbus Ulysses (or Ulixes, the Latin form of the Greek name Odysseus) is one of the prominent characters in the poems of Homer. He was king of Ithaca, an island Off the west coast of Greece. He joined the'expedition of the Greeks against Troy, leaving his wife Penelope, with their infant son Telemachus, on the island. He is described in the Iliad as taking a leading part in the siege Of Troy, and he was the chief 'of the band that, concealed in the wooden horse, entered the city and brought about its fall. After the destruction of Troy he set out for home, but it was ten years before he arrived there. The story of the adventures that befel him during this time is told in the Odyssey. At length he reached Ithaca, punished the men who were wasting his substance, and was restored to his wife and son. He had been away from home for twenty years. Homer does not tell how the rest of his life was spent, but he says that Teiresias had prophesied that' his death should come from the sea. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christopher and Columbus The gulls, circling white against the gloomy sky over the rubbish that floated on the Mersey, made them feel extraordinarily forlorn. Empty boxes, bits of straw, orange-peel, a variety of dismal dirtiness lay about on the sullen water; England was slipping away, England, their mother's country, the country of their dreams ever since they could remember - and the St. Luke with a loud screech had suddenly stopped. Neither of them could help jumping a little at that and getting an inch closer together beneath the rug. Surely it wasn't a submarine already? Book The Century of Columbus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Century of Columbus Classic Reprint written by James Joseph Walsh and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Century of Columbus In a previous book, The Thirteenth Greatest of Centuries, I described the period of human activity in which, as it appears to me, more was accomplished that is of significance in the expression of what is best in man and for the development of humanity than during any corresponding period of the world's history. To many people it may now seem that I am setting up a rival to the Thirteenth Century in what is here called The Century of Columbus, the period from 1450 to 1550. I may as a foreword say, then, that there is no thought of that and that I still feel quite sure that the Thirteenth is the Great est of Centuries, though it must be admitted that probably more supremely great men were at work in Columbus' Cen tury than in the preceding period. The Thirteenth Century is greatest, however, because its achievements were more widely diffused in their in uence and because more of man kind had the opportunity and the incentive to bring out the highest that was in them, than at any other period in the world's history. As a consequence a greater proportion of mankind was happy than ever before or since, for happiness comes only with the consciousness of good work done and the satisfaction of personal achievement. And that is the greatest period of human history when man is the happiest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbus and What He Found The immortal deed of Columbus will never lose its hold upon the heart of humanity, Whatever the criticisms upon it. It will always be told, not only for what was found, but because simple heroism - the same element which has immortalized Greek heroic tales - will always move us, head and heart. It is strange that, great and simple as Columbus was, we have made so little use of his story for the children, compared with that of other historic characters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Modern Columbus After a heroic struggle, heartburnings, and the joys and sorrows (measles included) which are child hood's inheritance, I reached the ninth anniversary of my birth; and that was a red-letter day in my existence, for my mother very graciously presented me with a stepfather as a token of esteem and regard. This I did not hesitate to look upon as a flagrant breach of contract, having hoped to acquire a popgun or a catapult. Even something useful would have been more acceptable. Under these circumstances, the addition to the family circle created anything but a favourable impression upon the previous arrival, and arguments became more frequent and acrimonious in character, being conducted upon a triangular basis, of which triangle I was certainly not the apex. Book The Adventures of Ulysses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Adventures of Ulysses Classic Reprint written by Charles Lamb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Ulysses Some have even supposed that in the hero of the Odys sey we have the best portrait of Homer himself. If so, we know that he was not simply a poet, but, like Ulysses, a man of many resources and many devices - a sort of Greek Yankee, always equal to the occasion, who could fight, sing, or flatter his way through all difficulties, and was sure of success in the end. To understand and enjoy this little book of Charles Lamb's, one must know something of what precedes it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
