Book Ultrashort Laser Pulses for Electrical Characterization of Solar Cells

Download or read book Ultrashort Laser Pulses for Electrical Characterization of Solar Cells written by Markus Mundus and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to provide highly accurate performance evaluations of photovoltaic devices has never been more important given the recent, and anticipated, progress in photovoltaics. The lowest possible measurement uncertainties are required for reliably assessing technological advances and reducing investment uncertainty. As the further reduction of these uncertainties within conventional solar cell measurements is often hindered by the measurement setups themselves, innovative approaches in the development of new measurement facilities are vital. This thesis addresses such demand by applying ultrashort laser pulses for highly accurate solar cell characterization. Based on a detailed investigation of pulse-solar cell interaction, a setup for spectral responsivity measurements is developed. This cutting-edge measurement setup substantially outperforms current state-of-the-art facilities in terms of measurement accuracy. Furthermore, a novel measurement approach is presented that takes advantage of spectrally shaped supercontinuum radiation. Imitating standard solar spectra with the shaped supercontinuum radiation promises a quicker and more accurate measurement of the solar cell s short circuit current than is presently possible using conventional methods.

Book Laser Cutting and Micromachining for Localized and Targeted Solar Cell Characterization

Download or read book Laser Cutting and Micromachining for Localized and Targeted Solar Cell Characterization written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser cutting and micromachining can be applied to solar cell materials for processing and characterization applications. An ultrashort pulse (USP) laser with sub-picosecond pulse width can remove material with minimal thermal effects or damage, which is termed 'cold ablation'. Such USP laser cutting and scribing can be implemented for isolating areas within a larger cell while maintaining electrical performance and preventing laser-induced damage and shunting. Laser micromachining has been used to isolate a shunt to improve cell performance and to isolate a small, selected area to define a sample suitable for deep level transient spectroscopy.

The theoretical studies are practical because they predict the fundamental limits of a solar cell. • The design and development of thin-film technology-based solar cells. • State of the art for bulk material applied for solar cells based on crystalline silicon (c-Si), also known as “solar grade silicon,” and emerging photovoltaics.

Book Correlative Elemental and Electrical Micro analysis of Laser Fired Contacts in Silicon Solar Cells

Download or read book Correlative Elemental and Electrical Micro analysis of Laser Fired Contacts in Silicon Solar Cells written by Patricia Yen (S.M.) and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photovoltaic (PV) energy is an abundant and clean alternative to conventional energy sources, which pose an irreversible threat to the environment. For PV to reach cost parity with conventional energy, advances like laser-fired contacts must be adopted to improve cost levers like solar cell efficiency and industrial throughput. This work examines the relationship between laser-processing on the structure and property of solar cells, with the goal of (1) characterizing the differences between using two lasers simultaneously (double-shot lasing) versus a single laser for LFC processing, and (2) using the new findings to optimize industrial LFC efforts. Electrical properties such as lifetime degradation and contact resistance are evaluated using photoluminescence imaging and transmission line measurements, respectively. LFC structures are studied using scanning electron microscope and elemental mapping tools like micro-X-ray fluorescence microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. For the conditions studied, it is unclear whether double-shot lasing can produce higher-quality LFCs than single-shot lasing, although results suggest that the infrared laser influences electrical properties more than the green laser. For future LFC optimization, the [mu]-XRF maps of elemental distribution may offer a novel way to evaluate LFC formation.
