Book excerpt: This report describes the results of experiments performed in various areas of material and component technology required for the development of multiple gigabit per second fiber based optical interconnect and optical communication links. First, we will summarize the development of a chromium-doped:YAG (Cr(4+): YAG) solid state laser for use in the 1500 nm transmission window of optical fiber. The Cr(4+): YAG laser produces tunable femtosecond pulses from 1488 to 1535 nm with average TEM sub 00 output powers ranging from 40 to 80 mW. The laser is mode locked using a novel saturable absorber mirror structure. The laser is also tunable from 1450 to 1574 nm in the continuous wave mode with an average TEM sub 00 output power of 600 mW at 1487 nm. Next, we will describe the synchronization of a passively mode locked erbium-doped fiber laser to an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser. Stable synchronization is obtained at injection powers of 1.5 mW. Finally, we report on the investigation of multiple quantum well saturable absorbers used to initiate mode-locking of standing wave linear cavity erbium-doped fiber lasers.

Book excerpt: This book describes fully embedded board level optical interconnect in detail including the fabrication of the thin-film VCSEL array, its characterization, thermal management, the fabrication of optical interconnection layer, and the integration of devices on a flexible waveguide film. All the optical components are buried within electrical PCB layers in a fully embedded board level optical interconnect. Therefore, we can save foot prints on the top real estate of the PCB and relieve packaging difficulty reduced by separating fabrication processes. To realize fully embedded board level optical interconnects, many stumbling blocks need to be addressed such as thin-film transmitter and detector, thermal management, process compatibility, reliability, cost effective fabrication process, and easy integration. The material presented eventually will relieve such concerns and make the integration of optical interconnection highly feasible. The hybrid integration of the optical interconnection layer and electrical layers is ongoing.

Book excerpt: The feasibility to apply a nonlinear optical based all-optical induced switch for the future ultrafast waveform digitization and processing applications has been tested in this program. Induced optical elements (prism, grating, lens, etc.) can create small scale optical elements for data communication and information processing. The ultrafast all optical deflector is based on a geometric space refractive index change induced by an area-modulated ultrafast laser pulse in a nonlinear optical material. A transient prism-like modulation can be formed and will in turn deflect a signal beam on the picosecond time scale. This program has utilized some of existing facilities, staff, and state-of-the-art equipment in photonic research at CCNY. A picosecond YAG laser system and a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser system were used to setup the experiment for the design consideration of a high speed induced deflector and to study promising materials for the induced nonlinear optical process. Nonlinear optical materials included: CS2 liquid, supercooled salol, plastic crystal succinite, ZnSe, glass and doped polymers. They were tested to study parameters such as third order optical nonlinearity, response time, absorption and geometrical distortion. The results using a Bi-Pb-Ga doped glass with fast and large optical nonlinearity are described in section 4.1. Future research should be aimed toward the design of a time resolved DWDM optical interconnect using spectral nonlinear optical elements and the development of a compact system with Terabits/sec to petabits/sec capability using array of transient optical circuits.

In addition, new optical storage techniques push the limits of information density, with an ever decreasing cost per bit of storage. Economic investment in photonics is at an all-time high. At the same time, other fields of optics, adaptive optics for instance, are bringing new capabilities to more classical applications such as astronomical imaging. New lasers continue to be developed, with applications in display, sensing, and biomedicine following at ever-shorter intervals after the initial discoveries. Given this background, the NATO Mediterranean Dialog Advanced Research Workshop on Unconventional Optical Elements for Information Storage, Processing and Communications, held in Israel on October 19-21, 1998, came at an opportune moment in the history of optics. Its aim was to overview the current state-of-the-art and encourage cooperation in the Mediterranean region, with a view to highlighting and enhancing the existing potential for further development and innovation. The workshop included participants from Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA.

Optical computing devices have the potential to build the very next computing infrastructure. Given the frequency limitations and cross-talk phenomena, as well as the soft-errors, of electronic devices on one hand, and the natural parallelism of optical computing devices, as well as the advances in ?ber optics and optical switches, on the other hand, optical c- puting is becoming increasingly marketable. The focus of the workshop is on research surrounding the theory, design, speci?cation, analysis, implementation, and application of optical supercomputers. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: design of optical computing devices; electro-optics devices for interacting with optical computing devices; practical implementations; analysis of existing devices and case studies; optical and laser switching technologies; applications and algorithms for optical devices; and alpha practical, x-rays and nano-technologies for optical computing. The First OSC workshop was held on August 26th, 2008, in Vienna, Austria, co-located with the 7th International Conference on Unconventional Computing. This volume contains eight contributions selected by the program committee andtwoinvitedpapers. Allsubmittedpaperswerereadandevaluatedbyatleast three program committee members, assisted by external reviewers. The review process was aided by the EasyChair system. OSC 2008 was organized in cooperation with OSA the Optical Society of America. The support of Ben-Gurion University and Babe?-Bolyai University is also gratefully acknowledged.
