Book Banking s Final Exam

Download or read book Banking s Final Exam written by Morris Goldstein and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spurred by the success of the first stress test of US banks toward the end of the global economic crisis in 2009, stress testing of large financial institutions has become the cornerstone of banking supervision worldwide. The aim of the tests is to determine which banks are adequately capitalized under severe economic shocks and to order corrective measures for those that are vulnerable. In Banking’s Final Exam, one of the world’s leading experts on banking regulation concludes that the tests administered on both sides of the Atlantic suffer from fundamental weaknesses, leading to a false sense of reassurance about the safety and soundness of the banking system. Some weaknesses can be corrected within the existing bank-capital regime, but others will require bold reforms—including higher minimum capital requirements for the largest and most systemically-important banks. The banking industry is likely to resist these reforms, but this book explains why their objections do not hold water.

Book The Development of Non bank Financial Institutions in Ukraine

Download or read book The Development of Non bank Financial Institutions in Ukraine written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prospect of European integration presents huge opportunities and challenges for the development of non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) in Ukraine. By most measures, the development of the NBFI sector in Ukraine lags far behind that of recent accession countries in Central Europe. To address the main impediments facing the development of the sector, the Ukrainian authorities need to implement a strategy based on six main pillars: 1) strengthen the capacity, independence, funding, and accountability of the NBFI regulators; 2) develop money markets, government bond markets, and municipal bond markets; 3) restructure equity markets; 4) accelerate the introduction of funded pension schemes, and improve transparency and consumer protection in the insurance industry; 5) radically transform corporate governance; and 6) broaden access of NBFI finance.

Download or read book Russia s Crony Capitalism written by Anders Aslund and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A penetrating look into the extreme plutocracy Vladimir Putin has created and its implications for Russia’s future This insightful study explores how the economic system Vladimir Putin has developed in Russia works to consolidate control over the country. By appointing his close associates as heads of state enterprises and by giving control of the FSB and the judiciary to his friends from the KGB, he has enriched his business friends from Saint Petersburg with preferential government deals. Thus, Putin has created a super wealthy and loyal plutocracy that owes its existence to authoritarianism. Much of this wealth has been hidden in offshore havens in the United States and the United Kingdom, where companies with anonymous owners and black money transfers are allowed to thrive. Though beneficial to a select few, this system has left Russia’s economy in untenable stagnation, which Putin has tried to mask through military might.

Book PSD2 in Plain English

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Rohan
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2016-04-07
  • ISBN : 9781517598556
  • Pages : 88 pages

Download or read book PSD2 in Plain English written by Paul Rohan and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PSD2 is the second EU Payments Services Directive. It will lead to big changes in EU banking. Most recent regulations have harmonised EU payments. PSD2 is different. The changes are radical and it is breaking new ground. Information from a customer's payment account is very useful. It is a vital ingredient for developing financial products. For many years, only the bank providing the account had this information. If more providers get this information, innovation and competition will increase. PSD2 cracks open this information for all providers. PSD2 lets many service providers initiate payments and access data from an account. The customer needs to agree to this. Payments experts are not the only people impacted by PSD2. Product designers, risk managers, consultants, compliance officers, investors and bank customers should understand PSD2. This book explains PSD2 to business professionals who are not payments experts. It shows how payments data could be a key ingredient in new service innovations. It explains how the business models of traditional banks could change. PSD2 in Plain English avoids the jargon used by payments experts. The book carries the accreditation of a 'Plain English Book Mark'. This accreditation means the book's clarity has been independently assessed by the Plain English Campaign. The Book Mark requires clear layout and design. The language in the book is appropriate for the intended audience.

Book Banking On Basel

Download or read book Banking On Basel written by Daniel Tarullo and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-30 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turmoil in financial markets that resulted from the 2007 subprime mortgage crisis in the United States indicates the need to dramatically transform regulation and supervision of financial institutions. Would these institutions have been sounder if the 2004 Revised Framework on International Convergence of Capital Measurement and Capital Standards (Basel II accord)—negotiated between 1999 and 2004—had already been fully implemented? Basel II represents a dramatic change in capital regulation of large banks in the countries represented on the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision: Its internal ratings–based approaches to capital regulation will allow large banks to use their own credit risk models to set minimum capital requirements. The Basel Committee itself implicitly acknowledged in spring 2008 that the revised framework would not have been adequate to contain the risks exposed by the subprime crisis and needed strengthening. This crisis has highlighted two more basic questions about Basel II: One, is the method of capital regulation incorporated in the revised framework fundamentally misguided? Two, even if the basic Basel II approach has promise as a paradigm for domestic regulation, is the effort at extensive international harmonization of capital rules and supervisory practice useful and appropriate? This book provides the answers. It evaluates Basel II as a bank regulatory paradigm and as an international arrangement, considers some possible alternatives, and recommends significant changes in the arrangement.

Download or read book Ukraine written by Anders Aslund and published by Peterson Institute for International Economics. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ukraine has been wracked by a year of unprecedented political, economic, and military turmoil. Russian military aggression in the east and a legacy of destructive policies and corruption have created an imminent existential crisis for this young democracy. Yet Ukraine also has a great opportunity to break out of economic underperformance. In this study, Anders Åslund, one of the world's leading experts on Ukraine, traces Ukraine's evolution as a market economy starting with the fall of communism and examines the economic impact of its recent difficulties. Åslund argues that Ukraine must undertake sweeping political, economic, social, and government reforms to achieve prosperity and independence. For its part, the West must abandon its hesitant approach and provide broad economic assistance to help Ukraine transform itself.
