Book Contemporary Military Culture and Strategic Studies

Download or read book Contemporary Military Culture and Strategic Studies written by Alastair Finlan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores and compares the contemporary military cultures of the United States and the United Kingdom. The last decade has witnessed astonishing global events, from 9/11 and military operations in Afghanistan in the same year, to the military intervention in Libya in 2011. Western military forces have been involved in all of these campaigns and have been engaged in continuous military operations for over ten years. It is therefore now apt to focus a spotlight on the military cultures of these state-based armed forces. This book examines how contemporary American and British military culture is formed, focusing explicitly on the six major military institutions. The author dedicates a chapter to each of these institutions with each one sharing a unifying analytical framework. These chapters explore the formation and sustenance of US/UK military culture under the rubric of common themes that include social origins, transformative events, leaders, approaches to war, technology and contemporary identity. To conclude, the book considers the impact of the War on Terror on the military cultures of the US and UK, as well as likely directions for the future. This book will be of much interest to students of military studies, strategic studies, security studies and comparative politics.

Book War Identity and the Liberal State

Download or read book War Identity and the Liberal State written by Victoria Basham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines the significance of gender, race and sexuality to wars waged by liberal states. Drawing on original field-research with British soldiers, it offers insights into how their everyday experiences are shaped by, and shape, a politics of gender, race and sexuality that not only underpins power relations in the military, but the geopolitics of wars waged by liberal states. Linking the politics of daily life to the international is an intervention into international relations (IR) and security studies because instead of overlooking the politics of the everyday, this book insists that it is vital to explore how geopolitical events and practices are co-constituted, reinforced and contested by it. By utilising insights from Michel Foucault, the book explores how shared and collectively mediated knowledge on gender, race and sexuality facilitates certain claims about the nature of governing in liberal states and about why and how such states wage war against ‘illiberal’ ones in pursuit of global peace and security. The book also develops post-structural work in international relations by urging scholars interested in the linguistic construction of geopolitics to consider the ways in which bodies, objects and architectures also reinforce particular ideas about war, identity and statehood.

Book The Economics of the Global Defence Industry

Download or read book The Economics of the Global Defence Industry written by Keith Hartley and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes an original contribution to our knowledge of the world’s major defence industries. Experts from a wide range of different countries – from the major economies of North America and Western Europe to developing economies and some unique cases such as China, India, Singapore, South Africa and North Korea – describe and analyse the structure, conduct and performance of the defence industry in that country. Each chapter opens with statistics on a key nation’s defence spending, its spending on defence R&D and on procurement over the period 1980 to 2017, allowing for an analysis of industry changes following the end of the Cold War. After the facts of each industry, the authors describe and analyse the structure, conduct and performance of the industry. The analysis of ‘structure’ includes discussions of entry conditions, domestic monopoly/oligopoly structures and opportunities for competition. The section on ‘conduct’ analyses price/non-price competition, including private and state funded R&D, and ‘performance’ incorporates profitability, imports and exports together with spin-offs and technical progress. The conclusion explores the future prospects for each nation’s defence industry. Do defence industries have a future? What might the future defence firm and industry look like in 50 years’ time? This volume is a vital resource and reference for anyone interested in defence economics, industrial economics, international relations, strategic studies and public procurement.

Book The Homeland Security Dilemma

Download or read book The Homeland Security Dilemma written by Frank P. Harvey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the paradox of the ‘security dilemma’ in International Relations, as applied to the post-9/11 context of homeland security. The book's central argument can be summed up by the following counterintuitive thesis: the more security you have, the more security you will need. It argues that enhancing security does not make terrorism more likely, but rather it raises public expectations and amplifies public outrage after subsequent failures. The book contests that this dilemma will continue to shape American, Canadian and British domestic and international security priorities for decades. In exploring the key policy implications resulting from this, the book highlights the difficulty in finding a solution to this paradox, as the most rational and logical policy options are part of the problem. This book will be of interest to students of Homeland Security, Security Studies, US politics, and IR in general.

Book Equipment support and technology for UK defence and security

Download or read book Equipment support and technology for UK defence and security written by Great Britain: Ministry of Defence and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-12-20 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Green Paper looks at the procurement of equipment, support, and technology for UK defence and security and follows on from the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) (ISBN 9780101794824), published on the 19th October 2010. The UK today faces a different and more complex range of threats than last century. The most serious threats include international terrorism, hostile attacks upon UK cyberspace, a major natural hazard or an international military crisis. Therefore the Government needs access to critical technologies and skills to underpin the UK's national security and to achieve these by setting out clear plans covering the following areas: (i) acquiring the equipment needed; (ii) support for the equipment and its users; (iii) investing or acquiring the necessary technologies to secure these objectives both now and in the future. This consultation paper and the responses it receives will form part of a White Paper to be published in 2011.
