Book Historical Dictionary of Uganda

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Uganda written by Joseph Kasule and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-06-22 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda is one of the most fascinating countries in Africa. Situated in the middle of the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa, it is home to diverse flora and fauna. Little wonder Winston Churchill famously named it “the Pearl of Africa”. Neighbored by South Sudan, DRC, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, Uganda claims the source of the River Nile and a larger share of Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. Uganda’s capital, Kampala is famous for hosting many international conferences and summits including the 2007 Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting. Uganda is witnessing rapid development, overseen by Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni who has served as president since 1986, making him the longest serving leader in Uganda. Museveni came to power on the backdrop of a 5-year guerilla struggle that toppled the regimes of Milton Obote and the military junta of Tito Okello Lutwa. Historical Dictionary of Uganda, Second Edition, covers the history of Uganda using a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and a bibliography. The dictionary section covers many entries on politics, economy, foreign affairs, religion, society, culture, and important personalities. The book provides a quick access for researchers, students, tourists, and anyone interesting in learning about Uganda.

Book The Ugandan Morality Crusade

Download or read book The Ugandan Morality Crusade written by Deborah Kintu and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, General Museveni, Uganda's autocratic leader, ordered police to arrest homosexuals for engaging in behavior that he characterized as "un-African" and against Biblical teaching. A state-sanctioned campaign of harassment of LGBT people followed. With the approval of sections of Uganda's clergy (and with the support of U.S. evangelicals) harsh morality laws were passed against pornography and homosexual acts. The former law disproportionately affected urban women, curtailing their freedoms. The latter--known as the "kill the gays bill"--called for life imprisonment or capital punishment for homosexuals. The author weaves together a series of vignettes that trace the development of Uganda's morality laws amidst Machiavellian politics, religious fundamentalism and the human rights struggle of LGBT Ugandans.

Book Kings of Disaster

Download or read book Kings of Disaster written by Simon Simonse and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited, revised, and illustrated edition of Simon Simonse’s study of the Rainmakers of the Nilotic Sudan marks a breakthrough in anthropological thinking on African political systems. Taking his inspiration from René Girard’s theory of consensual scapegoating, the author shows that the longstanding distinction of states and stateless societies as two fundamentally different political types does not hold. Centralized and segmentary systems only differ in the relative emphasis put on the victimary role of the king as compared with that of enemy. Kings of Disaster proposes an elegant and powerful solution to the vexed problem of regicide.
