Book Arts Integration in Diverse K 5 Classrooms

Download or read book Arts Integration in Diverse K 5 Classrooms written by Liane Brouillette and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Partnerships are now pervasive in global education and development, but are they creating equitable, cooperative, and positive relationships? Through case studies of prominent multistakeholder partnerships—including the Education Cannot Wait Fund and Global Partnership for Education—as well as a comprehensive analysis of the global education network, this book exposes clear power imbalances that persist in the international aid environment. The author reveals how actors and organizations from high-income countries continue to wield disproportionate influence, while the private sector holds a growing degree of authority in public policy circles. In light of such evidence, this book questions if partnerships truly ameliorate power asymmetries, or if they instead reproduce the precise inequities they are meant to eliminate. “This text offers a thoughtful look into both theoretical and practical issues surrounding arts integration as a viable strategy for increasing students’ achievement and access to higher education and career pathways. It is especially timely in the context of a widespread focus on equity and inclusion as teachers are facing more diversity in the classroom than ever before.” —Kristen Greer-Paglia, CEO, P.S. ARTS “This book, offering a rich buffet of art-based activities grounded in critical ideas about teaching and learning, includes topics as oral language development, visual thinking strategies, making meaning of narrative and informational texts, and expression through narrative and informational writing. An excellent guide to teachers aspiring to integrate the arts into their curriculum, it is both a delightful and useful read!” —Liora Bresler, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana

Book Frankie Welch s Americana

Download or read book Frankie Welch s Americana written by Ashley Callahan and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ashley Callahan's richly illustrated book, Frankie Welch's Americana: Fashion, Scarves, and Politics, with a foreword by LaDonna Harris, illuminates Frankie Welch's remarkable career by discussing her designs as they relate to the tradition of political swag, reflect women's changing roles in politics and business, and embody fashion styles of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Welch began fashion consulting (advising individuals what clothing to wear and buy) in the early 1950s and established her dress shop, Frankie Welch of Virginia, in Alexandria in 1963. She deftly navigated the complex social and political connections in the Washington, D.C. area, and her shop became a leading fashion destination for the political set. She created thousands of signature scarves for political campaigns, both major political parties, clubs, schools and alumni groups, corporations, and foundations as diverse as McDonald's, the Smithsonian Institution, United Way, the Algonquin Hotel, the United States Air Force, TimeLife Books, the Folger Shakespeare Library, McCormick Spice, the New York Jets, the National Press Club, the National Trucking Association, and the University of Georgia. She provided scarves for Betty Ford, Jimmy Carter, and the Reagan/Bush inauguration. Frankie Welch's Americana also identifies significant designs and discusses their creation, use, and influence in detail. It also highlights how Welch embraced and promoted her role as an entrepreneur, building a niche business that capitalized on her location near Washington and political connections, as well as her fashion expertise. Each scarf design offers an opportunity for a general audience to view the nation's recent past through the informative lens of women's fashion, and the story of Welch's success presents an appealing, accessible narrative"--

Book Introduction to Old Javanese Language and Literature

Download or read book Introduction to Old Javanese Language and Literature written by Mary S. Zurbuchen and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest and most extensive written language of Southeast Asia is Old Javanese, or Kawi. It is the oldest language in terms of written records, and the most extensive in the number and variety of its texts. Javanese literature has taken many forms. At various times, prose stories, sung poetry or other metrical types, chronicles, scientific, legal, and philosophical treatises, prayers, chants, songs, and folklore were all written down. Yet relatively few texts are available in English. The unstudied texts remaining are an unexplored record of Javanese culture as well as a language still alive as a literary medium in Bali. Introduction to Old Javanese Language and Literature represents a first step toward remedying the dearth of Old Javanese texts available to English-speaking students. The ideal teaching companion, this anthology offers transliterated original texts with facing-page English translations. Theanthology focuses on prose selections, since their straightforward style and syntax offer the beginning student the most rewarding experience. Four sections make up the collection. Part I offers several short readings as the most accessible entry point into Old Javanese. Part II contains two moralistic fables from an Old Javanese retelling of the Hindu Pañcatantra cycle. Part III takes up the epic, providing excerpts from one of the books of the Old Javanese retelling of the Mahābhārata. Part IV offers excerpts from two chronicles, the generic conventions of which challenge received notions of history writing because of their supernaturalism and folkloric elements. Includes introduction, glossary, and notes.

Book Journey Through Genius

Download or read book Journey Through Genius written by William Dunham and published by Penguin Books. This book was released on 1991-08 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like masterpieces of art, music, and literature, great mathematical theorems are creative milestones, works of genius destined to last forever. Now William Dunham gives them the attention they deserve. Dunham places each theorem within its historical context and explores the very human and often turbulent life of the creator — from Archimedes, the absentminded theoretician whose absorption in his work often precluded eating or bathing, to Gerolamo Cardano, the sixteenth-century mathematician whose accomplishments flourished despite a bizarre array of misadventures, to the paranoid genius of modern times, Georg Cantor. He also provides step-by-step proofs for the theorems, each easily accessible to readers with no more than a knowledge of high school mathematics. A rare combination of the historical, biographical, and mathematical, Journey Through Genius is a fascinating introduction to a neglected field of human creativity. “It is mathematics presented as a series of works of art; a fascinating lingering over individual examples of ingenuity and insight. It is mathematics by lightning flash.” —Isaac Asimov
