Book Re Viewing the Cold War

Download or read book Re Viewing the Cold War written by Patrick M. Morgan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-02-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cooperative effort by a number of historians and political scientists, this essay collection focuses on the important connection between domestic affairs and foreign relations during the Cold War. The case studies treat phases of both the Soviet and American experiences and involve contributions by two Russian scholars, three Americans, a German, a Swede, and an Israeli. This collection is particularly timely and signficant because of the surprising way the Cold War ended, making clear that domestic developments can overthrow even the most potent foreign policies and undermine longstanding assumptions about the primacy of international factors. A provocative essay collection, this will be of interest to diplomatic historians and Soviet Affairs specialists, scholars, and students.

Book American Foreign Policy in Regions of Conflict

Download or read book American Foreign Policy in Regions of Conflict written by H. Wiarda and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America s regional foreign policy priorities are shifting, toward Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa, and away from Europe and Russia. Wiarda examines these changes and the reasons for them in each of these regional areas in this comprehensive work on global perspective on American foreign policy. Designed as a text for introductory international relations, foreign policy, comparative politics, and world politics courses, this book succeeds in integrating these often separate subfields and shows how the study of comparative politics can enlighten foreign policy.

Book Crisis and Confrontation

Download or read book Crisis and Confrontation written by Morris H. Morley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1988 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors examine the Reagan administration's foreign policy in light of growing economic and political conflicts among the United States, Western Europe, and Japan, and the surge of political and social struggles in the Third World. Included are detailed analyses of America's relations with the Soviet Union, Western Europe, southern Africa, Central America and the Caribbean, the Philippines, Northeast Asia, and the Middle East, in addition to a comprehensive study of Reagan's foreign-aid policy. The chapters, which assess the intersection between policy pronouncements and Reagan's capacity to realize stated goals, identify constraints that limit and sometimes force modification in the style, if not the substance, of White House foreign policy.

Book Between Containment and Rollback

Download or read book Between Containment and Rollback written by Christian F. Ostermann and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of World War II, American policymakers turned to the task of rebuilding Europe while keeping communism at bay. In Germany, formally divided since 1949,the United States prioritized the political, economic, and, eventually, military integration of the fledgling Federal Republic with the West. The extraordinary success story of forging this alliance has dominated our historical under-standing of the American-German relationship. Largely left out of the grand narrative of U.S.–German relations were most East Germans who found themselves caught under Soviet and then communist control by the post-1945 geo-political fallout of the war that Nazi Germany had launched. They were the ones who most dearly paid the price for the country's division. This book writes the East Germans—both leadership and general populace—back into that history as objects of American policy and as historical agents in their own right Based on recently declassified documents from American, Russian, and German archives, this book demonstrates that U.S. efforts from 1945 to 1953 went beyond building a prosperous democracy in western Germany and "containing" Soviet-Communist power to the east. Under the Truman and then the Eisenhower administrations, American policy also included efforts to undermine and "roll back" Soviet and German communist control in the eastern part of the country. This story sheds light on a dark-er side to the American Cold War in Germany: propaganda, covert operations, economic pressure, and psychological warfare. Christian F. Ostermann takes an international history approach, capturing Soviet and East German responses and actions, and drawing a rich and complex picture of the early East–West confrontation in the heart of Europe.
