Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diptera, or true flies, are of considerable economic importance, as these flies have a valuable role as scavengers, parasitoids and predators of other insects, pollinators, food for predators, bio-indicators of water quality, and tools for scientific research. In nine chapters, this book examines various aspects of flies of the order Diptera as well as some types of mosquitos and midges. Topics covered include taxonomy, phylogeny, life cycle, feeding habits, population control strategies, and more. A unique chapter on forensic entomology is particularly interesting. Beautifully illustrated and expertly researched, this volume will appeal to entomologists, biologists, and naturalists.

Download or read book Typical Flies written by E. K. Pearce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Typical Flies: A Photographic Atlas of Diptera, Including Aphaniptera The chief season for collecting in this country is from March till October, the sunny forenoon being the best time. Windy days are very unproductive. Even well-known and good localities are sometimes a blank, from causes we do not know, for ies seem very capricious in their habits. But, like other creatures, they have special haunts where they may usually be found at the proper season, and where they may be expected to occur if carefully searched for. Considerable experience in their habits and localities is needed by the collector. Generally Speaking, umbelliferous plants, also bramble, hawthorn and ivy bloom seem to be most attractive. Flies often settle upon gate-posts, railings, and tree trunks, especially if wounded or decayed. Others frequent salt-marshes and swamps, ponds and river-sides whilst heath-lands, sheepruns, bare hot sandy areas and commons attract others. Horse and cattle droppings and decomposing animal and vegetable matter are well known baits for many species. Others attack living animals, not excepting man; and certain ies prey on insects and spiders. Should horses or cattle be approached for the purpose of taking ies, much care must be exercised, as a net will generally stampede them; it is difficult to employ it to advantage under such conditions. Book Favorite Flies and Their Histories

Download or read book Favorite Flies and Their Histories written by Mary Orvis Marbury and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Who of all that go a-fishing will deny the feeling of a calm content and the glow of satisfaction consequent upon a creel a little heavier of a fish a little larger than that of his fellow-fisherman?” Over 120 years after its original publication, Mary Orvis Marbury’s Favorite Flies and Their Histories remains a hugely popular and reliable resource for fly-fishing enthusiasts. Marbury’s compilation of nineteenth-century patterns, fancy flies, and fishing theories led the way in standardizing fly patterns in North America, and remarkably, these century-old techniques continue to be cherished by pursuers of the modern sport. With information gathered from more than 200 fly-fishers and seasoned anglers across the United States and Canada, Favorite Flies and Their Histories details the stories, histories, and appearances of the most beloved and most successful flies in the sport. Marbury shares stories of over 300 lake, salmon, trout, and bass flies, divided by their geographic location and accompanied by a list of her fly-fishing correspondents. Her patterns are ornate, often beautiful, and always highly effective. Containing a wealth of photographs, engravings, and elaborate color plates, Favorite Flies and Their Histories is a must-have addition to any serious fly-fisher’s collection.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Typical Flies: A Photographic Atlas To Mr Harwood, of Sudbury (suffolk), I am again greatly indebted for many specimens, especially those of Trypetidaea, and seq. There appeared to be no recent illustrations of these beautiful ies and similar species, or even of some rare and common ies, of which identification is difficult. So these, too, have been included in this little volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Frit Flies Chloropidae Diptera of Fennoscandia and Denmark

Download or read book The Frit Flies Chloropidae Diptera of Fennoscandia and Denmark written by Emilia Nartshuk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frit Flies (Chloropidae, Diptera) of Fennoscandia and Denmark is written by two leading experts on this large and difficult group of small to minute flies, Dr Emilia P. Nartshuk, Zoological Institute Academy of Sciences, St Petersburg, Russia, & Dr Hugo Andersson (deceased in 2008), Zoological Institute, Lund University, Sweden. The book covers the North European fauna of frit flies that totals 209 species in 48 genera including 11 species and 1 genus described as new to science. Several species are economically important as notorial pests of cereals and fodder grasses. This is the first comprehensive treatment ever of the entire North European fauna of frit flies. It primarily facilitates species identification, but further summarizes existing knowledge about nomenclature, biology, faunistics and literature. Keys are given to subfamilies, genera and species for the adults and for the known larvae to genus or even species level. The text is supplemented with numerous illustrations of characters of diagnostic importance. Species distributions in the Nordic countries are detailed in a catalogue.
