Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades several activities in the field of water resources management have been enhanced and intensified. This . rise had at least two independent reasons. The first and main one was the constantly increasing water demand for agriculture and industry on one side and the concern about the deteriorating environment on the other. While this last concern was lately overshadowed by deterioration of national economies, the quantity of available water resources has certainly not increased with the growing scarcity of funds for its development and protection. Furthermore, the standard of living, which raised across the world, even in India and China, countries which concentrate more than a third of the world population, has made people and their governments more aware of natural disasters caused by weather. Since a large percentage of losses in human life and material damage from weather-related disasters are caused by water, either by its excess or scarcity, the concern about water has been increasingly associated with these disasters. The second reason for intensified water resources management is man's spectacular technological advance in electronics, computers and use of satellites. The Koran says that two things cannot be predicted: the sex of the child in its mother's womb and the quantity of water that falls from the sky and flows in rivers. Technological progress has disproved both of these caveats.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the report and the proceedings of the Government of India/Government of Andhra Pradesh/FAO Workshop on Measures to Reduce Loss of Life during Cyclones. After making a detailed analysis of the events occuring at sea and on land on 6 and 7 November 1996 in East Godaveri District the workshop addressed the issues of cyclone forecasting and dissemination in India and in the region, awareness programmes for disaster preparedness, gender concerns with regard to disaster preparedness and management, search and rescue operations, the use of radio transceivers at sea and on land for cyclone warnings, improvements of mechanized fishing vessels and their equipment. Four sets of recommendations were made by four working groups covering these areas.

Book Tropical Cyclones

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Anthes
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-06-29
  • ISBN : 1935704281
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Tropical Cyclones written by Richard Anthes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Cyclones and hurricanes, long feared for the death and destruction that often accompanies them, are among the most fascinating of atmospheric phenomena. Created by thermodynamic processes, they unleash vast amounts of energy and influence a wide variety of natural processes along their paths. Richard Anthes tells the story of tropical cyclones creation and destruction, of meteorology's successes in understanding, modeling and predicting their behavior, and of the attempts to modify them. The book begins with a lively introduction to hurricanes, their awesome power, and their effects on individuals and societies in the past and present. The characteristics of the mature hurricane are revealed by consideration of rawinsonde, aircraft and satellite data. The physical processes responsible for the development and maintenance of tropical cyclones are treated comprehensively, and illustrated with both qualitative and quantitative examples. The role of the planetary boundary layer, cumulus convection and radiation are all discussed in detail. Progress in numerical simulation of tropical cyclones is carefully reviewed. Modern, three-dimensional models succeed in simulating observed features such as the eye and spiral rain bands and in predicting storm motion over time intervals of three days. Current capabilities to predict and modify hurricanes and tropical cyclones are fully examined. The methods and difficulties of operational forecasting, the economic aspects of storm predictions, and the trends in accuracy of offical forecasts are all considered. The potential benefits and scientific problems associated with hurricane modification are discussed as part of a review of experimental and theoretical results on the consquences of seeding hurricane clouds. A unique feature of the book is a thorough treatment of the interactions between storm and ocean, with both observations and thery being integrated to provide a complete description.

Book Recent Hurricane Research

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony Lupo
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2011-04-19
  • ISBN : 9533072385
  • Pages : 634 pages

Download or read book Recent Hurricane Research written by Anthony Lupo and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents recent research on tropical cyclones and their impact, and a wide range of topics are covered. An updated global climatology is presented, including the global occurrence of tropical cyclones and the terrestrial factors that may contribute to the variability and long-term trends in their occurrence. Research also examines long term trends in tropical cyclone occurrences and intensity as related to solar activity, while other research discusses the impact climate change may have on these storms. The dynamics and structure of tropical cyclones are studied, with traditional diagnostics employed to examine these as well as more modern approaches in examining their thermodynamics. The book aptly demonstrates how new research into short-range forecasting of tropical cyclone tracks and intensities using satellite information has led to significant improvements. In looking at societal and ecological risks, and damage assessment, authors investigate the use of technology for anticipating, and later evaluating, the amount of damage that is done to human society, watersheds, and forests by land-falling storms. The economic and ecological vulnerability of coastal regions are also studied and are supported by case studies which examine the potential hazards related to the evacuation of populated areas, including medical facilities. These studies provide decision makers with a potential basis for developing improved evacuation techniques.

Book Results of Monitoring Study of Agat Harbor Guam

Download or read book Results of Monitoring Study of Agat Harbor Guam written by David D. Mcgehee and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agat Harbor, Guam, was selected for monitoring under the Monitoring of Coastal Projects Program, which is sponsored by Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During a 3-year observation period, the following data were collected: a. Directional energy spectra and surface winds from an offshore site. b. Energy spectra at several locations on a shore-normal transect across the reef flat. c. Wave conditions and water elevations at the structure and harbor response during large wave events. d. Directional energy spectra at the outer boundary of the model and at several sites within the harbor. e. Energy spectra at the outer and inner ends of the channel. f Periodic site inspections and aerial photographs of the harbor and surroundings. Most of the quantitative objectives of the study were not met because of the lack of measured data during high-energy events. However, observations have resulted in valuable qualitative information that should be considered when planning or designing projects in a similar environment.
