Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northwest Illinois, 1885. Mitch and Andy Jensen's Adventure in the Haunted Woods will teach them lessons of God's unconditional love and His perspective about vampires and zombies. Do they really exist? A violent storm causes school to close early, and Mitch and Andy find themselves taking a shortcut through the haunted woods to get home. Ignoring the legends that say the woods are filled with vampire zombies, they stumble upon an old miner's cabin deep in the woods. Thinking they found shelter from the storm, they are scared off when they see glowing red eyes staring at them from inside. There is never a dull moment in this sequel to Mitch and Andy's Adventure on the Tyler City Trail. Readers get to visit Grandpa Joe's cattle ranch, learn about the final roundup from Uncle Stew, and meet Mitch and Andy's school friends including the new boy who arrives late every day and is the first to leave. Why won't he talk to anyone? Mitch and Andy's Adventure in the Haunted Woods teaches all those involved, including the reader that God goes with us when we are afraid and that He loves us so much that he made a way for us to be at His final roundup feast.

Book A Burglar s Guide to the City

Download or read book A Burglar s Guide to the City written by Geoff Manaugh and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city seen from a unique point of view: those who want to break in and loot its treasures At the heart of Geoff Manaugh's A Burglar's Guide to the City is an unexpected and thrilling insight: the city as seen through the eyes of robbers. From experts on both sides of the law, readers learn to understand the city as an arena of possible tunnels and picked locks—and architecture itself as an obstacle to be outwitted and second-guessed. Never again will readers enter a bank without imagining the vault geometry, or visit a museum without plotting ways to bring their favorite painting home with them. From how to pick locks (and the tools required) to how to case a bank on the edge of town, readers will learn to spot the vulnerabilities, blind spots, and unseen openings that surround us all the time. This simultaneously allows us to view the city—from specific buildings and individual rooms to whole neighborhoods—through the privileged eyes of FBI investigating agents and security consultants, people dedicated both to solving and to preempting these attempts at devious entry. Full of absurd and marvelous stories of heists and capers, and offering a kind of criminal X-ray of the built environment, A Burglar's Guide to the City includes its own twist: the realization, hidden in its final chapter, that all along the book has been laying out the relevant details for plotting the perfect robbery, an ambitious and real proposal for robbing a bank in New York City.

Book Carry Me Down

  • Publisher : Grove Atlantic

Download or read book Carry Me Down written by M. J. Hyland and published by Grove Atlantic. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Man Booker Prize finalist is “a fast-paced psychological drama . . . of the pain of lost innocence and the price of pursuing the truth” (People). John Egan is a misfit—“a twelve year old in the body of a grown man with the voice of a giant”—who diligently keeps a “log of lies.” John’s been able to detect lies for as long as he can remember, it’s a source of power but also great consternation for a boy so young. With an obsession for the Guinness Book of Records, a keenly inquisitive mind, and a kind of faith, John remains hopeful despite the unfavorable cards life deals him. This is one year in a boy’s life. On the cusp of adolescence—from his changing voice and body, through to his parents’ difficult travails and the near collapse of his sanity—John is like a tuning fork sensitive to the vibrations within himself and the trouble that this creates for him and his family. Carry Me Down is “a spare, piercing testimony to the bewilderment and resiliency of youth” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). “Writing of the highest order.”—J.M. Coetzee “Surreal, heartbreaking . . . John Egan [is] a character the reader is privileged to meet. Hyland’s skill is commendable. Carry Me Down, in all its grossness and granular beauty, is a remarkable book.”—San Francisco Chronicle “In taut, simple prose, Hyland meticulously captures the specific pains of growing up poor and lonely in Ireland and deftly anatomizes her judgmental protagonist’s odd mixture of . . . little boy and grown lad.”—Entertainment Weekly

Book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959

Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959 written by Graham Webb and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a "filler" in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s.
