Book excerpt: Rare glimpses of two 20th-century Sufi saints are offered in this work: the eminent Shaykh al-Alawi and the lesser-known woman saint Fatima al-Yashrutiyya, both of whom continued on the Sufi path even as they watched their world crumble. Shaykh al-Alawi's influence was pivotal to the spiritual development of Thomas Merton, who looked to al-Alawi's writings and teachings in his own practice. Fatima al-Yashrutiyya is a rare example of a literate Muslim woman living a public spiritual life. Readers will see a new side of the Sufi Path from her uncompromising viewpoint, and can catch an uncommon glimpse of life in the early 20th century for a spiritual seeker, writer, and self-educated woman in the Muslim world. These essays represent Islam in its esoteric dimension and raise issues of regional unrest and colonial intervention that are still relevant. Through the words of these two saints the world of the Sufi brotherhood is opened, revealing an underlying theme of the oneness of Allah.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented in the most lucid style, the purpose of the book is not merely to know the characteristics of the self. It is also to find out about the truth of existence and beyond death,as well as to learn the process to knowledge. Only then the individual would discover the reasons for his selfishness, hatred, anger, fear that he cradles everyday in his life. The issue to have the knowledge of the `self` is very obscure. Yet the ideas presented in the book are not only inspirational but also introspective and embody the qualitative rational techniques to reach higher recesses of consciousness and soul-realization. The book is captivating as examples from real-life situations have been quoted to explain what is the nature of the Self and how it can transcend to tranquillity, peace and permanent bliss. Some Glimpses: *Do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you *The Western point of view about Self--Greek Ideas, European Contention and Five Theories of Mind *The Eastern Approach--Vedantic conception, Gita`s mantras, Jiva as a conscious substance *Western dilemma and the Eastern approach--concept of unity and the quest for unity #v&spublishers

Book The Emperor Commodus

    Book Details:
  • Author : John S. McHugh
  • Publisher : Casemate Publishers
  • Release : 2015-08-31
  • ISBN : 1473871670

Download or read book The Emperor Commodus written by John S. McHugh and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical biography goes beyond popular legend to present a nuanced portrait of the first century Roman emperor. Commodus, who ruled over Rome from 177 to 192, is generally remembered as a debaucherous megalomaniac who fought as a gladiator. Ridiculed and maligned by historians since his own time, modern popular culture knows him as the patricidal villain in Ridley Scott’s film Gladiator. Much of his infamy is clearly based on fact, but John McHugh reveals a more complex story in the first full-length biography of Commodus to appear in English. McHugh sets Commodus’s twelve-year reign in its historical context, showing that the ‘kingdom of gold’ he supposedly inherited was actually an empire devastated by plague and war. Openly autocratic, Commodus compromised the privileges and vested interests of the senatorial clique, who therefore plotted to murder him. Surviving repeated conspiracies only convinced Commodus that he was under divine protection, increasingly identifying himself as Hercules reincarnate. This and his antics in the arena allowed his senatorial enemies to present Commodus as a mad tyrant—thereby justifying his eventual murder.
